Few days ago, in a zoo located in Cincinnati, Ohio, United States, a 17 year old Gorilla named Harambe was shot dead by Zoo officials a day after his 17th birthday in a bid to save a 4 year old boy who crawled through a railing barrier and fell about 10ft into the Ape’s enclosure.
Cincinnati Gorilla

The gorilla is one of the Western lowland gorillas deemed critically endangered by World Wildlife Fund. His death has sparked an outrage with many calling for justice for the Ape.
For an average Nigerian who lives in Nigeria, it appears very strange….too strange even….that people should be calling for justice for a ‘bloody gorilla’. This is very understandable considering that ours is a country where we kill everything and anything ranging from trees, animals and humans just for fun.
If you come from a country where the army chief massacred roughly 1000 of his fellow compatriots just for blocking his way when the country is not at war and yet retains his post as the army chief, surely, those calling for justice for ‘ordinary’ gorilla will come across to you as a bunch of psychiatric candidates.

A country where security agents invaded a group of prayer chanting men and women inside the football field of Ngwa high school in Aba, Abia state and murdered them in cold blood with impunity. A country where state actors and non state actors are competing over who should record the highest casualty figure against the defenseless citizens. Surely, for citizens of such a country, calling for justice for ‘a common animal’ is madness taken too far.
Personally, the death of Harambe was a necessary evil. The gorilla surely didn’t deserve to die even as his death was a good judgment call on the part of the zoo officials.
I think the child’s mum was careless…. too careless even. Her carelessness bothers on criminal negligence. It is not fair that the gorilla has been made to pay the ultimate price for her negligence. That boy could have died. What if it was a lion or a python and not a gorilla?? She knew she was in a zoo, not a child’s playground and according to eye witness, the little boy had previously indicated interest to go into the gorilla’s house. So that should have made her more mindful of the child. You don’t take a kid to such a place and fail to put that kid on a leash. That woman was clearly negligent.

I am in support of d death of the gorrila, d decision goes a long way to drive home d importance of the lives of its citizen, unlike in nigeria were d life of one cow is considered greater dan d lives of a community.
