South African telecoms giant MTN said Friday it would pay a $1.7 billion fine to the Nigerian government in a “full and final settlement” over its failure to disconnect unregistered mobile phone users.

The company said in a statement that “MTN Nigeria has agreed to pay a total cash amount of Naira 330 billion over three years.”

Africa’s biggest wireless operator was fined $3.9 billion last year and has since been in negotiations with the government over the payout.

I think this is a good settlement. They are to pay a about 43% of the initial hefty fine. While it is good to punish errring companies, the punishment should not be that which will make them fold up.

And if corporations are given such fines, they will definitely sit up.

If this is the way all these oil companies polluting the Niger Delta have been made to pay fines, corporate pollution would have been brought to the barest minimum in that area.

This administration seems to be getting, either by recovering looted funds, fines or otherwise, a lot of money... thumbs up.

Hope it's used judiciously and the continuous "no money" complaints stops.

After all Mozambique is the poorest country in the world and you don't hear them saying "no money"; they have come to Light with the situation and work amidst it.
