Mathematics and Accounting are two different areas. This looks easy but it is not because everyone will arrive at a different answer…

A lady bought goods worth ₦200 and paid the shopkeeper with a ₦1000 Note.

The Shopkeeper had no change on him so he went to another Shopkeeper John his neighbour and collected ₦1000 change in ₦200 denominations, with which he settled the lady and she left.

A little while later, John came back angrily after he discovered the ₦1000 note he was given by the shopkeeper was fake, and demanded a replacement.

To avoid trouble, the shopkeeper had to give John another ₦1000 and destroyed the counterfeit which had no real value.

So Question for the geniuses…
How much has the Shopkeeper lost in total?

A. ₦1200

B. ₦2000

C. ₦1000

D. ₦1800

E. ₦2200

F. None Of The Above

C. Shopkeeper received the fake 1000, which he exchanged with John for real 1000. He gave the woman back 800 real currency as change leaving him with 200 real currency. So far Shopkeeper hasn't lost any money, the goods have technically been paid for. John discovers the 1000 he received was fake, so the Shopkeeper had to reimburse John by giving John 1000 (we are assuming he already had at least one 1000 note on his person).

Some might even say he's only lost 800, since he received 200 & spent 1000...since that's actually the total, I'll switch to F.

He only lost 1000 naira which was the replacement for the counterfeit.
So the answer is C.

Let's assume the shopkeeper didn't have to borrow from his neighbour, i.e he had the change of 200 naira in 5 places (means he has 1000 naira on him).
Now a customer purchases an item of 200 naira.
He gives her 800 naira and receives the fake 1000 naira.
Now he is left with 1200 naira.
He later realises that the 1000 naira was fake and decides to tear it.
Now he is left with just 200 naira (but remember that his item of 200 naira is also gone).
He could decide to make a replacement just to have that item in stock.
Secondly, if the customer returns the item and demands a refund claiming she has spent the change he gave her earlier, he will part with the 200 naira on him (out of the 1200 naira left initially), then at the close of work for the day, he notices that the 1000 naira on him was fake, he will definitely destroy it leaving him empty handed but his item remains in his store.

So shopkeeper lost just 1000 naira.
