Hell is not about fire. It is actually total exclusion from God that brings pain. If God stays in the fire, it brings no pain; remember the story of three young men thrown into fire by king nebuchadnezzer? The fire didn't burn them because God was in the fire with them. So it is exclusion from God that brings pain, fire or no fire. Jesus said I am the vine, you are the branches, cut off from me you can do no good. God is the source of all good (James), absence of God is lack of good and source of pain.
God doesn't push people into a hell, that is away from himself. Sin does! God is holy and no unholiness can stand in his presence. It is analogous to light and darkness, darkness disappear in presence of light. Likewise evil people vanish into abyss of darkness in the presence of almighty God and inherit pain.

Purpose of hell fire:

1. Choice - because God already knew millions would make the choice to spend eternity in hell as they believe that hell is a place of fun. As an example, you can find so many who have already made their choice in nairaland here.

2. The devil and his followers - though God originally created hell for the devil and other fallen angels (who He did not spare by giving a chance of repentance) He will not, like a dictator, forcefully restrict the movement of those who wish to follow the ways of the devil, their master, to their ultimate destruction despite the repeated warnings He gives them to desist, to DESIST from following the devil, despite the numerous opportunities He gives them to repent from their sinful ways. Therefore, one is only responsible for ending up in hell where God did not intend that man should be but which He cannot stop from happening if He must be fair in allowing them to have their way and if He must maintain His eternal title as the righteous Judge in judging them rightly.

3. As a Reward - hell is the ultimate reward of sin. Sin, like a heap of refuse, is meant for the fire. Every action has a reward, good or bad. The wages of sin is death (spiritual, not physical death which is hell) and the reward of righteousness is eternal life. If a person continues in sin, serving his master, the devil, he will surely be rewarded for his actions.

Many are still ignorant about what the love of God means. They think that since God loves man He will not place man in hell. That is one of the greatest lies in the world. God is love and He is also very terrible, to be feared. He is love and He is also a Judge to be feared. The reasons I have given above are more than enough to make anybody end up in hell let alone when one considers the nature of God as love and as a just Judge.
