The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board in a joint meeting with the Federal Ministry of Educationand National Universities Commission (NUC) has proposed a cut-off mark of 210 marks for 2016/2017 admission exercise.


This is significant increase on the previously approved and widely-used 180 marks.In a meeting held at the board’s headquarters in Abuja, JAMB registrar, Professor Ishaq Oloyede emphasized the need to up the standard of education in Nigeria.

He stated that, “by increasing the JAMB general cut-off mark for 2017/18 admission, we significantly increase the quality of candidates that are admitted into various tertiary institutions in Nigeria.”JAMB Registrar,

Prof. Ishaq OloyedeA spokesperson of the NUC, revealed to Vanguard NGR that the mark is aimed at ensuring that Nigerian universities admit only the top best, in line with international best practices.

He also said that they are aware that some universities have their own admission cut-off marks acceptable by it for courses they offered. This means that we can still see some people increasing their cut-off marks to 250 and more.

The JAMB registrar added that the decision to have a national acceptable cut-off marks

during its recent policy meeting was to serve as a guide and pruning mechanism to give the tertiary institutions qualitative candidates to choose from a pool of candidates desirous of tertiary education.
