MEANING OF CORRUPTION

Corruption could be referred to immoral, dishonest, illegitimate or illegal behaviour of people.

When people deviate from standard behaviour in order to satisfy their selfish ends at the expenses of the masses or public.

For Example, people using the advantages of their positions or power to do something immoral or dishonest in other to make money or satisfy other selfish ends like, a governor who is involve in money laundering, a police man who collectswallow money from communters on the highway or police men who demand money for bail because (bail is free but police men demand money for bail).

An office worker who expects money I form of bribe before attending to people files etc.

The above behaviour and many mililar more are corrupt behaviours, whether the person perpetrates corruption to make money or to favour his relations and friends or to satisfy his ethnic group members to the disadvantage of others.

My dear, corruption is not good, As a good student and good citizens of Nigeria, we must eschew corruption.

FORMS OF CORRUPTION

1. Extortion



2. Advance fee fraud (419)



3. Bribery



4. Taking gratification in discharge of your duties



5. Infuence of peddling



6. Embezzlement of public funds



7. Accepting kick back before a contract is awarded.



8. People in position of authority e.g governors engaging in money laundering



9. Insincerity with a view to be favoured either in cash or other.



10. Not being punctual to work



11. Laziness and inability to report cases of inducement to appropriate quarters.





CAUSES OF CORRUPTION

Some of the following causes of corruption are. ..



- Being poor without hope



- Poor remuneration



- Greed



- Social attachment to material wealth



- Breakdown in social value and ethics



- Poverty and economic insecurity



- illiteracy.

SOCIAL ATTACHMENT TO MATERIAL WEALTH

Some society over value material wealth and emphasize on it's acquisition.

Anybody in such a society who does not possess material wealth is seen as a relegate.

Whether the material wealth is gotten by crooked means or not, the society does not want to know.

This makes people indulge in corruption, probably to elevate their status in the society.

BREAKDOWN OF SOCIETY'S VALUE AND ETHICS

No society wants to be identified with negative values .

And every society has it's own standard of ethics.

But due to development, most of our societies no longer uphold their values and ethics.

This leads to corruption because, our norms, customs and traditions are given way to the civil practice of modern times.

People no longer attach importance to their values and ways of doing things, instead, they imbibe values and ethics that are foreign to them, thereby committing evil practices which they formerly regarded as taboo.

This leads to corruption, poverty and economic insecurity.

GREED

This is the desire to aquire excessive wealth without taking other people into consideration.

Greed normally leads to evil practice (corruption)

POOR REMUNERATION

Poor remuneration in form of salary or reward for any job from which people earn their living could lead to corrupt practice.

Example,, Teacher who invigilate examination, officers of examination bodies etc. indulge in accepting gratification or money from students or candidates to perpetrate examination mal-practices because the money or salary they receive is poor.

This makes some of them to be involved in such corrupt practice.

BEING POOR WITHOUT HOPE

Lack of basic necessities if life could lead to corruption.

Hunger and penury could make people get involved in different kinds of corrupt practice to survive.

ILLITERACY

Inability to read and write encourage corruption because, the illiterate can be manipulated by dishonest people who have sold their integrity for corrupt practice.

Such people can deceive them and steal public funds, not only in offices but in any organisation or group.

CONSEQUENCES OF CORRUPTION

Consequences of corruption in a society are. ..


1. Crime



2. Bad name to a country


3. Low moral value of the society


4. Low level of development


Corruption is a serious problem with negative effects on thesociety.

In a corrupt society, some influential individuals and money bags seem to be above the law.

Democratic governance gives way to pseudo democratic governance i.e ruling by deceit, elections are rigged by people who have sold their integrity for money, the judges receive money and give judgement in favour of the highest bidder.

This means judiciary is corrupt, and once justice is sold for money in any country, there is no hope for common man i.e and the poor masses or citizens of such a country.

This could make a society jungle.

CRIME

In any society where marl value is low, crime becomes the other of the day.

Criminal activities become a normal way of life.

This makes people delight in committing different kinds of crimes, such as money laundering, advance fee fraud (419) human trafficking, drug trafficking, prostitution, armed robbery, examination mal-practices.

LOW MORAL VALUE OF THE SOCIETY

Corruption makes a society to be filled and governed by people who have sold their integrity.

In such a society, corruption becomes a normal way of life .

Moral value of the society becomes very low.

The principles of right and wrong becomes a thing of the past.

And this enhance crime in a society.

EDUCATION

Education is one of the most important means by which corruption could be reduced in our society.

Education makes people to be well informed and equipped for gainful employment.

It makes us know how to read and write and avoid ignorance.

When people know their rights and are able to defend them, it will be difficult to manipulate or deceive them.

Education will help us secure good jobs and aschew corrupt practice.

In Nigeria, the government introduced some agencies to check and eradicate corrupt practices.

The organisation's or agencies have recorded a great measure of success in checking corrupt practices like advanced fee fraud 419, money laundering by political office holder's etc.

1. EFCC...... Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (and related offences)


2. ICPC......... Independent Corrupt Practice Commission

All should be strengthened and well-equipped with maximum support from the government and masses to enable them to eradicate corrupt practice in Nigeria.
