Trader stabs customer to death in Ogun

A 22-year old man allegedly stabbed by a petty trader in Ibafo, Obafemi-Owode Local Government Area of Ogun State was on Wednesday confirmed dead by the police.

The suspect, who sells articles at Temidire Street in Ibafo, allegedly stabbed the deceased, identified simply as Kehinde in the chest on Tuesday over what residents described as a minor disagreement.

Our correspondent gathered that the deceased was the first to stab the elderly petty trader, said to be of Northern extraction and in his 60s with a broken bottle because he refused to sell to him.

Our correspondent further learnt that the trader had vowed not to sell anything to the deceased and his friends because they were irresponsible and usually owed him without wanting to pay.

An eyewitness, who craved anonymity for fear of reprisal, alleged that on Tuesday night Kehinde approached the Hausa man to sell either sugar or cigarette to him but he refused.

He said the trader's refusal did not go down well with the deceased who insisted that he must be attended to.

He added that the suspect swore in the name of Allah that he would not sell to him and this stance infuriated the deceased who picked a bottle nearby, broke it and stabbed the suspect.

The development, the eyewitness said, made the man to go for his dagger and stabbed the deceased who fell into coma and was rushed to a nearby hospital.

He said that when youths in the area learnt that the man had died at about 5am on Wednesday, they went berserk setting the kiosks of the Hausa traders in the area on fire.

A senior police officer at Ibafo Police Station, who craved anonymity, confirmed the incident, saying that the corpse of the deceased had been taken to an undisclosed mortuary.

He also told our correspondent that the suspect was already detained, saying that some policemen had been despatched to the neighbourhood to forestall further breakdown of law and order.
