In today’s world a lot of emphasis is placed on numbers when it comes to mobile technology and it is not totally wrong to state this.

Most times emphasis is based off of RAM and storage capacity of phones without placing much thought on the processors involved and their capacity to process data.

Today’s topic will be based on which is deemed more important between the RAM and the processing speed or processor.

Simply put, RAM is like temporary memory to store application information while processors are more like brain capacity of the device to run applications.

In the context of mobile phones, more RAM means a device can keep more sleeping program in the RAM so they will be ready to be quickly resumed when you return to the application. More RAM means Android is going to spend less time killing and reloading applications from the internal memory/sd card as the case may be. This means that more RAM usually give you faster task-switching.

Having more RAM also allows you to run complex applications that require lots of memory, e.g. photo/video editor, complex games, etc.

A high or better CPU than others simply means things run much faster and smoother especially when compared to other devices with other kinds of processors. For instance a high graphic game will run much better on a device with 3GB RAM and a Snapdragon 820 processor than on one with 6GB RAM and a Snapdragon 430 processor, being that the processor of the latter is a low end as compared to the former and is not suitable for heavy duty applications. This is so far as 3GB RAM is sufficient to run the game.

In today’s Nigeria majority of people want a mobile that will not hang which solely depends on processing speeds and processor involved. The most powerful processors in the world right now for mobile phones are Snapdragon processors manufactured by Qualcomm.

Unfortunately most of their vision is set on the RAM which is not bad but which works better at multitasking applications. In other words more RAM does NOT equal a faster phone.

In the above example the first device is the more powerful device with a much bigger brain capacity. The second device will handle switching across applications better but will run much slower than the first.

So an app junior will probably need more RAM but someone who wants applications to run smoothly will need a better processor.

It then boils down to preference.
