Sixteen members of an extended family last Saturday lost their lives in an auto crash, while 11 others suffered varying degrees of injury. An eyewitness told our correspondent the accident happened on Gwarzo-Kano road at about 1pm and involved two Hiace buses on their way to Kano for a naming ceremony. It was learnt 27 members of an extended family, including the drivers of the Toyota Hiace buses, were involved, out of which 16 died. They were family members of the former Managing Director of the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria, Halilu Getso. The accident, according to investigation, occurred when the two buses were overtaking another vehicle and in the process collided with an oncoming truck. Meanwhile, the bodies of the dead, mostly youths, have been evacuated and buried according to Muslim rites. Ahmed Getso described the incident as sad and tragic. When contacted, the Kano State Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Mallam Aminu Usman, who confirmed the accident, said it occurred on Kano-Gwarzo Road. A lovesick New Zealand woman has reportedly been swindled out of more than a quarter of a million dollars by a Nigerian scam artist. The two met online before the Nigerian man, Akintunde Vincent Abiodun, posing under an English alias of Christopher Williams captured the woman's heart. He convinced her to send $267,000, reassuring her he was good for the money courtesy of a family heirloom: a gemstone worth more than $18 million. She believed he was using the money to come to New Zealand and settle down with her. The Nigerian Economic and Financial Crimes Commission is investigating Abiodun, and he is set to be arraigned once the investigation is complete, Nigerian media have reported. Gunmen have snatched a 14-seater vehicle belonging to Channels Television in Benin, the Edo State capital. It was gathered that the white Toyota Hiace bus with registration number APP 98DC was snatched at gunpoint at about 9pm on Tuesday at Omoruyi Street, off Lucky Way, in Ikpoba Okha Local Government Area of the state. Our correspondent learnt that the gunmen numbering four trailed the vehicle in their vehicle and snatched the bus shortly after it was used to convey the Station Manager to his residence. The driver of the bus was said to have been tied up and beaten mercilessly by the attackers before he was dumped at Ogbemudia Farm, along Benin- Lagos road, at about 10.30pm. An official of the television station, who confided in our correspondent, said that the driver of the bus was, however, able to make contact with the management of the station through the assistance of some people in the area. www.punchng.com/news/gunmen-snatch-channels-tv-vehicle-in-benin/ |
