YOUR SUCCESS IN YOUR HAND
BIBLE TEXT: PROVERBS 12:23-27

"The hand of the diligent shall bear rule: but the slothful shall be under tribute" (Proverbs 12:24).

God created all things on earth and made human beings the head of all creatures. He created man in His own image and furnished him with all that he will need to succeed in life. He gave man a head with the brain, hands to work and create things, eyes and other sense organs for various functions.

The Psalmist looked at himself and praised God for His masterpiece architectural design in Psalm 139:14, "I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well." The human hand is a very important and serviceable part of the body. Our hands render a lot of service to the body, which include feeding, washing/cleaning, protection, defense, and a lot more. We also work with our hands. Failure and poverty are not far from such a person who has idle and lazy hands. As a Christian, use your hands to do good things to the glory of God.

People who are using their hands for wrong things, like stealing, fighting, writing/drawing bad things, touching unclean things, will go to hell if they refuse to repent. The sinful life is generally referred to as unclean hands in the Bible. *To get to heaven, you must have clean hands and a pure heart.

PRAYER: Lord, I dedicate my hands and my whole body to You, use me to do good things that will glorify You

CONTROL YOUR FEELINGS
BIBLE TEXT: EXODUS 17:1-4

"And the people thirsted there for water; and the people murmured against Moses, and said, Wherefore is this that thou hast brought us up out of Egypt, to kill us and our children and our cattle with thirst?" (Exodus 17:3).

God created us with the sense of feeling so that we can desire and pursue good things in life. Expressing our feelings therefore is a natural thing for all humans, but God does not want us to misuse those feelings.

In the passage today, the children of Israel murmured against Moses and also disrespected God, just because of temporary lack of water to drink. They became restless and spoke rudely to their leader, Moses. They also despised God's miracle, particularly their deliverance from Egypt. They acted like ungrateful people.

Many children act the same way when they have a little challenge or delay in getting something. They complain instead of praying to God. Little problems make them to forget bigger miracles of God. Delay in getting food, water and answers to prayers should not make you lose control of your feelings.

Believers are to always speak the word of faith whenever things seem to be going contrary to their expectations. Speak positive words, avoid blaming or criticizing anybody, pray and have faith in God. You should also put your feelings under control in moments of joy. Give glory to God in all circumstances.

Prayer: Lord, help me to put my feelings and emotions under control at all times.

ENOUGH FOR ONE ONLY
BIBLE TEXT: EZEKIEL 14:12-14

"Though these three men, Noah, Daniel, and Job, were in it, they should deliver but their own souls by their righteousness, saith the Lord GOD" (Ezekiel 14:14).

Daniel's father and mother were devoted members of their church. Daniel's father had been a pastor years before Daniel was born. Every member of the church expected Daniel to follow in the footsteps of his parents.

When people observed that Daniel was not loving the Lord as was expected, everyone began to pray for and talk to Daniel often about his salvation. Daniel misunderstood God's way and replied in anger: "What else do you people expect me to do? My father is a pastor and my mother a committed Christian. They are both righteous before God. Is that not enough to take me to heaven?"

No! The righteousness of one man is not enough to deliver another person from God's judgment. Our key verse makes this very clear. The righteousness of these three great men of God (Noah, Daniel and Job) was only enough to deliver them.

It is only your own righteous doings that will make God happy with you. Speak righteous words, think righteous thoughts and do righteous works. This is the only way you can be delivered from the trouble that will come upon the world.

PRAYER: Lord, help me to always do those things that are right before You

SUFFICIENT GRACE
BIBLE TEXT: 1 CORINTHIANS 1:1-5

"Grace be unto you, and peace, from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ" (1 Corinthians 1:3).

The Lord Jesus Christ came to the world and provided all that the believer needs to be able to live a victorious life in every place and in every situation. He brought down the riches of heaven to the earth for us. Among these are the twin virtues of grace and peace.

Grace is the unmerited love, favour, good will and kindness of God. It is the spring and source of all blessings we receive from God. Peace on the other hand is freedom from trouble, fear, anxiety and worry. It comes as a result of our trust in God's promises and the hope of living in heaven with Jesus at the end of our lives here on earth.

Grace accomplishes all things in a believer's life and plants the seed of the peace of God in our hearts. The grace and the peace of God are for those that are set apart for God's glory through the sacrifice of Christ Jesus. Today, you can receive the grace of God that brings salvation, a pure heart, the power of God's Spirit and victory over Satan and sin. This you can do by repenting and turning away from all your sins.

PRAYER: Thank You Lord for Your grace through which I am saved and for Your peace in my heart

THE TEA BAG
BIBLE TEXT: 1 PETER 4:8-11

"As every man hath received the gift, even so minister the same one to another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God" (1 Peter 4:10).

The tea bag is loaded with goodness from nature. It contains a substance known as flavonoids that help regulate cellular activities, fight off free radicals and harmful substances. Flavonoids are also powerful antioxidants. There are lots of health benefits we can derive from a tea bag, but until this tea bag gets into hot water and brews out its contents, all those benefits remain unused with the tea bag.

A Christian child is like a tea bag, full of grace and gifts from our heavenly Father. These gifts do not have value except we use them to profit other members of the body of Christ. A story was told of a woman who was always bringing bags of sachet water to the church on fellowship days for thirsty brethren to drink. Unfortunately, this woman died unexpectedly.

It was several weeks after her death that the church got to know that she was that precious vessel God had been using to quench the thirst of people. The environment could feel her impact, and thus, there was a vacuum when she was no more.

The colourless hot water does not remain the same when the tea bag gets in there. Spread the flavour of love in your fellowship and community, and make an impact in every life that comes your way.

PRAYER: Dear Father, make me a blessing to those that come my way

MY PIGGY BANK
BIBLE TEXT: GENESIS 41:34-37

"Let Pharaoh do this, and let him appoint officers over the land, and take up the fifth part of the land of Egypt in the seven plenteous years" (Genesis 41:34).

"Save for a rainy day" is an idiomatic expression commonly used by many people, but rarely put into practice. A "rainy day" in this expression stands for "a period of scarcity, want, need or challenges of any form." To the ant, a rainy day is a day to stay indoors or else it may be washed away by flood, thus, the ant saves ahead of time for a rainy day.

Many children find it difficult to save, they feel the money is too small, and thus decide to eat it up. This is a very bad attitude. If you save as little as #10 (a Nigerian denomination) in your piggy bank every day for a year, you will have #3,650; and if you save #50 per day, you will have #18,250. This money can be used to solve some problems, especially at the beginning of a new school year when your parents find it challenging to meet all your needs for school.

Pharaoh, in our text, through the advice of Joseph, saved one-fifth of all their produce against the years of famine that was ahead. What they saved kept them and the nations around them alive during the famine. Get a piggy bank today and begin to save for the rainy day. You can save from your pocket money and gifts of money you receive from people.

PRAYER: Dear Father, help me to be prudent, and wisely save for the future

A WHEAT OR A TARE?
BIBLE TEXT: MATTHEW 13:24-30

"Let both grow together until the harvest: and in the time of harvest I will say to the reapers, Gather ye together first the tares, and bind them in bundles to burn them: but gather the wheat into my barn" (Matthew 13:30).

Wheat is the grain of a plant that is processed into flour, malt, semolina and other types of food. The tare on the other hand is a type of weed that looks like wheat in its early stage of growth.

From the story in our Bible passage, the wheat represents children who have repented of their sins and are living in obedience to God. Tares represent children who pretend to be friends of Jesus but live in sin. They know about Jesus but have not sincerely repented of their sins. Some of them go to church, give offering, sing in the choir, bear Christian names, have their names in the church register, but their names are not in the book of God in heaven.

Just like the sower in the Bible passage who knows and differentiates between the wheat and the tares, God knows those children who have repented of their sins and those who are living in sin. He will reward those who are His friends and punish those who refuse to repent and accept Jesus Christ as their Saviour and Lord.

Are you a "wheat" or a "tare"? You can repent if you are yet to do so. Be sorry for your sins, confess them and ask God to forgive you and wash your sins away with the blood of Jesus. Be a wheat and not a tare.

PRAYER: Dear Father, I give You my heart. Wash me and make me Your friend now

LIFE: A GIFT FROM GOD
BIBLE TEXT: 1 CORINTHIANS 6:12-20

"For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's" (1 Corinthians 6:20).

Richard was given a beautiful and very expensive shirt by his uncle. Two weeks after, his uncle was surprised to see the shirt being used to mop the floor. His uncle was unhappy about how Richard treated the gift he gave him, and did not give him the new shoes he just bought for him.

Your life is a gift from God. It is to be used well and lived the way God wants it. A life of disobedience, lying, stealing, fighting and so on, "smells" and "stinks" before God. For your life to please God, you must repent, turn away from all sins and live a life of obedience.

You were created by God and He has a way He wants you to live. The Bible provides a guide on how to live a life to please God. Read the Bible every day, think on what you read, obey it and live by it.

The example of the life of Paul the Apostle, Ruth, Esther, David and many more people in the Bible confirms that it pays to live one's life the way God wants it. Decide today to live your life to please God and you will be forever happy you did.

PRAYER: Dear God, I want to live in obedience to Your word and live a life that pleases You. Please, help me Lord in Jesus' Name

BUSY HERE AND THERE
BIBLE TEXT: 1 KINGS 20:39, 40

"And as thy servant was busy here and there, he was gone. And the king of Israel said unto him, So shall thy judgment be; thyself hast decided it" (1 Kings 20:40).

The world is becoming a difficult place to live and serve God well. Efforts to make a living in the midst of numerous challenges in the world has made people to engage in too many activities to the extent of abandoning God and His word. People no longer pay attention to the things of God.

Children are not left out of these influences. Some are too busy doing one thing or the other. But if you carefully examine most of the things you do, you will discover that they are worthless and unprofitable.

The world has created many activities to take the heart and attention of children away from the Almighty God. Such activities include worldly games, sport, after school lesson, comedy, social media, and other attractions. Many children prefer to forsake fellowship with God and His people for those activities.

Modern inventions are good, to the extent that we use them for our academic success; we should never allow them hinder our relationship and duty to God. We should not be like the man in our Bible passage, he allowed the person entrusted into his care to slip away while he was busy here and there.

As believers, our salvation is more precious than anything else in the world. The work of winning souls that Jesus gave to us is equally important. While pursuing our good desire to be great in life through education or other means, the things of God should not be set aside.

PRAYER: Lord, help me not to be too busy with the things of this world and forget You

SIN: RED LIKE CRIMSON
BIBLE TEXT: Isaiah 1:16-19

"Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool" (Isaiah 1:18).

Colours have classes and grades, usually from the brightest to the darkest/deepest. The Bible likens sin to scarlet and crimson. Scarlet is the brightest of the family of red colour, tending towards orange, while crimson is the deepest or darkest of red colour, close to purple.

This comparison of scarlet and crimson with sin is a figure of speech to explain the fact that, no matter how bad a person is, the blood of Jesus is enough to remove and cleanse such. The sacrifice of Jesus on the cross of Calvary is for all sins.

God speaks through Prophet Isaiah that, despite the deep state of sin into which Judah has fallen, He is still willing to completely cleanse and purify those who forsake their sins and turn to Him. Jesus came, suffered and died on the cross for our redemption from sin.

Nothing can wash away sin except the blood of Jesus. Only by faith in Christ can one's sins be cleansed. No matter how far you have gone in your wrong doings, come to Jesus by repenting of your sin, asking Him for forgiveness and cleansing through His blood. Invite Him into your life to be Lord and Saviour.

As a believer, do not think somebody's sin is too great to be forgiven. Preach the gospel to all sinners and lead them to the merciful Saviour.

PRAYER: Lord Jesus, set me free from sin and make me clean

GODLY DETERMINATION
BIBLE TEXT: DANIEL 1:3-9

"But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king's meat, nor with the wine which he drank: therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself" (Daniel 1:8).

Daniel was an Israelite who was taken captive to Babylon from Judah. He was an interpreter of dreams and visions. He was promoted during the reign of Darius to be among the three presidents. He was a faithful servant to the king and God. He wrote the book of Daniel.

Immediately he got to Babylon, King Nebuchadnezzar gave him and his three friends scholarship to study in the king's special school. At that time, Babylon was the centre of idol worship. Daniel stood out and was distinct to the glory of God through godly determination. This was a difficult decision in a strange land, but he stood firmly because he knew the truth and believed it.

Have you been taught the truth of the word of God? Hold it fast; believe it, and it will strengthen you to stand for God. Daniel never regretted his fearless decision and determination to be godly. Young people in the Bible days did not always bother about what they will lose or gain for standing for God and His word.

In this generation, God is looking for another Daniel with godly character to stand for Him in every community. For this vision to be achieved, you must purpose in your heart to live for God despite oppositions from your peers.

There are great rewards when you stand for the Lord. These rewards include promotion, prosperity, power, peace, protection, preservation and paradise at last.

PRAYER: [My God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, raise me to be a godly child for Your glory

PEACE FOR TRUSTING HEART
BIBLE TEXT: ISAIAH 26:1-4

"Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee" (Isaiah 26:3).

God is the Giver of peace. We have peace with God when we repent of all sins and surrender our lives to Jesus. Peace brings total calmness into the heart. It is one of the fruit of the Spirit in the life of a believer whose heart is free from condemnation.

As you grow in your daily walk and fellowship with God, you will enjoy unlimited peace. Do you know that such peace is not available to a sinner? Without the salvation experience, there is no peace as the Bible says in Isaiah 48:22, "There is no peace, saith the LORD, unto the wicked."

Following Jesus with a sincere and trusting heart brings the peace of God in the life of a Christian. Moreover, Christians are commanded to live in peace, seek and promote peace every time and everywhere. Jesus is the Prince of Peace and He wants everyone to be like Him.

We can promote peace by living peacefully with everybody, avoiding bad behaviours that will hinder peaceful co-existence and helping sinners to make peace with God through preaching of the gospel. When you obey the word of God, the God of peace will be with you always. Seek and pursue peace.

PRAYER: [O Lord, please give me peace and help me to promote peace

SHED THIS WEIGHT
BIBLE TEXT: HEBREWS 12:1-4

"Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us" (Hebrews 12:1).

Most athletes who desire to excel in their chosen field often attempt to lose weight. They seek a slim and lighter body that will improve their strength and speed. It takes a lot of discipline and sacrifice to achieve this goal. They control their feeding, sleeping and level of enjoyment to shed unnecessary weight to keep fit. They also engage in regular rigorous exercises. They do all these to win earthly prizes and glory.

Believers are spiritual athletes who are running a race to heavenly glory. Earthly glory will fade away with time but heavenly glory is everlasting. Therefore, as believers, we should be focused and run our race avoiding weights that can pull us back. These weights are sins, dirty habits, worldly games/activities and other worldly attractions. The track to heaven is so narrow that it cannot accommodate unnecessary loads.

As you run your race gallantly like a soldier, set aside anything that will take away your focus from the Lord Jesus Christ. Engage in regular spiritual exercises by daily reading and studying your Bible, be watchful, live a holy life and pray for grace to run the heavenly race to the end.

PRAYER: Lord Jesus, please give me the grace to be focused and successfully run my race to the end

UNBROKEN TRUST
BIBLE TEXT: DANIEL 9:1-4

"And I prayed unto the LORD my God, and made my confession..." (Daniel 9:4).

Daniel put his trust in the God of Israel from a very tender age. He was a youth when he was taken to Babylon. The first challenge he faced in Babylon was that of being served food offered to the idol of Babylon. To the glory of his God, he refused to eat such food.

At the time he was saying this prayer in our Bible passage, he was an old man already. Yet, there was no single day of broken relationship with God. God loved him and trusted him to do what was right. He never disappointed the Lord one day. He was among a very few people in the Bible who was loved and favoured by God. The king of Babylon referred to him as the servant of the Most High God. God saved him from the lions to show His love to His beloved servant.

Daniel maintained unbroken trust in the God of Israel all the years of his life on earth. What a faithful friend of the Almighty God. Make Daniel your example. Love Jesus now that you are a child and continue to love Him till your old age; until you meet Him in heaven. It takes purpose of mind to love and serve Jesus. It takes a prayerful life to trust Jesus. Make up your mind that you will trust and love your Saviour always.

PRAYER: Lord, teach my heart to love and trust You no matter the pain I will suffer

JESUS, OUR PERFECT EXAMPLE
BIBLE TEXT: 1 PETER 2:21-24

"For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps" (1 Peter 2:21).

Jerry was doing very well in his studies until he started learning the bad ways of Gabby, his new friend. Jerry became lazy and disobedient. He started doing badly in his studies and even failed his examinations.

Jerry later realized that the problem was due to the bad things he learnt from Gabby. Jerry became sorry, repented of his sins, stopped the friendship with Gabby and started doing well again in his studies.

Jesus is the perfect example for everyone. There is so much to learn from Him. His life is the best example of success, love, obedience, humility, righteousness, forgiveness, victory over temptations and every good thing you can think about.

The first thing to do is to become one of His many friends by turning away from sin and receiving Him in your heart as your Lord and Saviour. Then, learn more about Jesus by reading your Bible every day and following His example.

Ask God for grace to live like Jesus. Those who follow the examples of Jesus enjoy the blessings of God here on earth and in eternity.

PRAYER: Dear Father, please help me to always follow the examples of Jesus in the way I live and behave

A LIFE OF PRAISE
BIBLE TEXT: HEBREWS 13:12-16

"By him therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of our lips giving thanks to his name" (Hebrews 13:15).

Many children forget to daily praise God and thank Him for His love and goodness, until they are reminded. Though, they remember to thank their parents for buying things for them, they forget to give thanks to God, the owner of life and everything.

Some children remember to give praise to God only when they are in church. This is wrong, thanksgiving and praise should be part of our lives. Praise and thanksgiving to God should be something we do every day. It must be done as many times as possible and not only when we feel like.

God appreciates and accepts praises from those who have repented of their sins and are living lives that please Him. Make up your mind today to be one of the people who lives a life of praise, those who honour God with their mouths, and lives that glorify Him.

The enemies of Judah were destroyed by God when Jehoshaphat and all Judah praised God. Paul and Silas experienced the power of God when they prayed and praised God. Join other friends of Jesus to praise God together, and experience the power of God.

PRAYER: Dear holy Father, help me to always praise You and live a life that brings glory to You

THE DUTIFUL LEARNERS
BIBLE TEXT: DANIEL 1:17-20

"And in all matters of wisdom and understanding, that the king enquired of them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and astrologers that were in all his realm" (Daniel 1:20).

Among the people taken captive to Babylon by Nebuchadnezzar were Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah. Their names were changed to Belteshazzar, Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego respectively.

These four boys were dutiful learners who did well in their studies. Our key verse confirms that "...in all matters of wisdom and understanding, that the king enquired of them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and astrologers that were in all his realm" (Daniel 1:20).

How did they become ten times better than others? This was possible because God gave them knowledge, skills and wisdom. These are great blessings from the Lord to all His children. Also, they worked hard at their studies. Jesus' friends today must be diligent in their studies too.

To show you are diligent in your studies, you will be regular in class, write all your notes neatly, do and submit your assignments promptly and prepare well for examinations. You will take personal studies seriously and ask questions where you do not understand. You will keep away from examination malpractices.

Believe the Lord to grant you ability to remember what you have read. Your motto should be: "Not slothful in business; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord" (Romans 12:11).

PRAYER: Lord, make me the head and not the tail

HEROES OF FAITH
BIBLE TEXT: HEBREWS 11:32-37

"Who through faith subdued kingdoms, wrought righteousness, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions" (Hebrews 11:33).

It is wonderful to know that people who lived at different times and ages, with different backgrounds, under different circumstances, could do great works of faith that the Bible testified of their worthy deeds. Their faith in God produced supernatural works.

The Bible, which is the word of God, identifies these heroes of faith, and they include:

(a) Gideon, who at first thought he was a nobody, but through encouragement, delivered the children of Israel from their powerful enemies with only three hundred soldiers.
(b) Barak, in partnership with Deborah, waxed valiant in fight and turned to flight the armies of the aliens.
(c) Jephthah, through faith, fought the battle of the Lord and delivered his people from the hand of their enemies.
(d) David, through faith in God, brought down Goliath, the giant.
(e) Samuel was a prophet who wrought righteousness and stood for God's honour in the midst of corruption.
(f) Women, like the Shunamite, who through faith confessed that it is well and received her dead child back to life when Prophet Elisha prayed.

Others, through faith, endured persecution for Christ's sake. They are all worthy examples for us to copy. Have faith in God, live by faith in God's word, and you will become a hero of faith.

PRAYER: Lord, give me faith to do exploits for You

REJECT DANGEROUS GIFTS
BIBLE TEXT: ACTS 8:18-23

"But Peter said unto him, Thy money perish with thee, because thou hast thought that the gift of God may be purchased with money" (Acts 8:20).

Gifts are good, particularly when received from our parents, relatives, family, friends and other pleasant people. Gifts can serve as reward for good behaviour or expression of love among friends.

When we receive gifts from people, we are taught to say "Thank you." This is part of moral training for children; we are to show gratitude and appreciation to people that give us gifts. Again, we are to let our parents/guardians know and approve the gifts we receive.

Do you know that some gifts should not be accepted or collected at all? Yes, as children of God, we should avoid gifts that will not allow us speak the truth and stand for Jesus in all situations. Any gift that will make us go against God's word should be rejected.

Evil people are everywhere using gifts to lure children (particularly girls) into the sin of immorality. Children and youths are daily enticed with gifts into joining evil associations like robbery, cultism, prostitution, etc. Apart from gifts of money and material items, you must say 'No' to offers of help or counsels from ungodly people.

Don't let lack or poverty make you seek help or accept help from ungodly sources. Look unto God for divine provision. Live a righteous life and run away from gifts that can corrupt and contaminate you.

PRAYER: Lord, help me to always reject ungodly gifts so that I can serve You acceptably

BEWARE OF THE WAY OF THE FOOLISH
BIBLE TEXT: PROVERBS 19:1-5

"The foolishness of man perverteth his way: and his heart fretteth against the LORD" (Proverbs 19:3).

Benuel was the second son in the family of four children. He was beloved of his parents and all the hope of the family was on him, being the first male child of the family. His father often boasted of him, calling him "the pillar". He would spend time to warn Benuel of the foolishness of associating with evil and lazy friends. He counselled Benuel saying that his future joy and peace depended on how and whom he spent time with now.

Benuel rejected the pieces of advice from his father calling him "old school." He chose to obey his "new" friends. Later on, to the disappointment of everybody, in the middle of his year in High School, Benuel's grade began to drop. His bad friends helped to turn his attention away from his studies to pleasure and betting. Benuel dropped out of school. Now, he is often heard blaming others and even cursing God for his foolishness and stubbornness. But he was the cause of all his present troubles.

It is foolishness to reject godly advice. Such attitude will cause you pain and regret. If you want to enjoy peace and progress in the future, turn away from the foolishness of doing evil and being lazy. Do not follow wrong counsel, let the word of God guide all your actions.
Prayer: Lord, save me from every influence that can ruin my future.
