Op well done

The line went dead. Well, at least, I had been able to temporarily disable trouble from Bisola. But my main worry was Kike. Anyway, things would sort out themselves. On Saturday morning, I planned how best to handle Yetunde during her visit. I decided neither to be hostile nor to be warm towards her. When she got the message that I didn't love her, she would be the one to opt out of further relationship.

Few minutes to noon, Yetunde called me.

'Good morning, Henry. How're you?'

'Fine. How're you, too?'

She laughed over the line. 'Well, we thank God. How do I get to your house?'

I gave her the address and how to get to the place.'

'Okay, see you.'

About twenty minutes later, she called again. 'I'm at the gate of your house.'

'Okay. Just hold on.' I left my house which was one of the two flats on the ground floor and went to the gate. I first opened the pedestrian gate to see if she had come with a car or not.

'Hello, Yetunde, I greeted.

'Hello, dear.'

She was standing by a Toyota Land Cruiser. She turned to the driver.

'Alright, you can go for now. Come and pick me tomorrow morning by eight.'

My mind was thrown into disarray. I thought she had only visited briefly. I never thought she would want to sleep over. The driver nodded, engaged the gear of the car, and drove away.

I led Yetunde to my flat. She examined the living-room and nodded.

'It's quite a nice place,' she said.

'Thank you, please sit down and make yourself comfortable.'

But she would not sit down. 'How many bedrooms, altogether?' she asked.

'Two.'

'I want to see them.'

Now, that was Yetunde, for you. She had not even settled down, but she wanted to inspect the rooms. I took her to my bedroom.

'We will have to change the bed,' she said. 'It's too low.'

She held my right hand.

'Let's see the kitchen.'

I nodded and took her to the kitchen.

'This kitchen is too small,' she fretted. 'How could they make the kitchen so small like this?'

'I think it's okay,' I said.

'Ah, no o,' she quickly answered. 'This place cannot contain many things. Where will the freezer be? What about the laundry machine? What about microwave oven, blender and dish washer? And the cupboards are too small!'

I sighed as I didn't know what else to say.

'Anyway, let's go inside and talk heart-to-heart.'

She had guts, didn't she? She was supposed to be a 'guest' in the house, but she was the one dictating the pace!

We returned to the sitting-room and sat side by side on a sofa.

'How's school?' I asked. 'I understand you're writing your project and you'll soon be through.'

She stretched her legs. 'Yes o. I want to finish fast. I'm already tired of that school.'

'Then, you'll still have to do your national youth service,' I pointed out.

'That one should be fun. I'm serving here in Lagos state.'

I nodded.

'Well, aren't you going to entertain me?'

I smiled. 'Pardon me. What will you like to take?'

'Can I get iced cubes? I brought wine already.'

She opened her bag and brought a red wine out.

'There should be iced cubes in the fridge,' I said and stood up.

'And get some glasses too,' she added.

I nodded and went to the kitchen. From the fridge, I extracted cubes of iced block in a jar. I then took two glasses, rinsed them, put them in a small tray and went to the sitting-room.

I popped the wine and filled the glasses.

'Cheers,' I said.

'Cheers!'

We clinked glasses and sipped our drinks.

'Do you like the taste of the wine?' she asked.

'The taste is very good.'

'Yes.'

I briefly studied her. She was on the plum side and quite busty. We had chatted together in the past, but the relationship had never gone beyond that.

'I hope there's a good eatery around here,' she said.
'You will have to take me there for lunch.'

'That's no problem. We have many of them around.'
'I want the best.'

I nodded again. 'No problem.'

She looked into my eyes. 'How d'you see me?'

I was surprised she asked that.

'What kind of question is that?'

'Oh, come on, I want to hear your opinions about me.'

I chuckled.

'Alright, maybe I should start,' she said. 'I see you as a complete gentleman. You're handsome, cool and calm. What will you say of me?'

Since she had good things to say about me, I decided to reciprocate the gesture.

'Well, you're pretty and attractive,' I said.

She made a face. 'Is that all?'

'You're also intelligent,' I added.

'Is that all?'

I was getting exasperated. What else did she want?

'I don't like you saying I'm pretty,' she said. 'Am I not more than that?'

I grinned. Now, I knew better. I played along with her. 'You're beautiful,' I said.

She seemed delighted. 'Ehn, that's what you should have said first.'

I grinned again.

'And there's something you're doing which I don't like.'

I became curious. 'What's that?'

I grinned. Now, I knew better. I played along with her.

'And there's something you're doing which I don't like.'

I became curious. 'What's that?'

'Ever since I came here, see the way you've been treating me.'

I looked askance. 'I'm sorry I don't understand you.'

'But, you should,' she replied. 'Is this the way a man should treat his lover? No hugging, no kissing. Nothing.'

'Oh, I'm sorry about that.'

'Don’t tell me you're shy.'

I laughed shortly. 'No, I'm not.'

She put her right hand on my lap. My heart beat increased. Should I tell her that I liked her but did not really love her? Or should I just play along?

I lifted my right hand to wrap her shoulders. She moved closer. I wished it was Kike I was holding. I imagined she was the one but could not go far with my imagination. The next thing Yetunde said brought me back to reality.

'When are we going to do our wedding?' she asked.

I sighed.

'I don't know.'

'You should know,' she pointed out. 'What about next year?'

I was at loss again. 'Maybe we should know each other better before we talk of marriage.'

I could feel her stiffen.

‘We’ve known each other since we were kids. How else d’you want us to know each other better?’

‘It’s not just about knowing, but understanding each other.’

'Do you love me?' she demanded.

I removed my hand from her shoulders. I supposed this was the moment of truth.

She stared at me.

'There's another lady, right?'' she asked.

'Yes.'

'Haven't you ditched her? I had to ditch my guy when dad told me about you.'

I shook my head. 'No, I've not done so.'

'And when are you going to do so? When will you have time to concentrate on me? Why don't you call her to tell her right away that it's over?'

'I can't because I love her.'

She stood up. 'Wait a minute. You're making this whole thing look like I'm forcing myself on you!'

'I didn't say so!'

'But, that's what you're doing. No wonder you've been so cold to me since I came.'
