The Minister of Science and Technology, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu has said that the federal government is set to boost investment in space science technology because of its tremendous benefit to the nation.
He made this known during the commissioning ceremony of the Astronomy Observatory Complex of the Centre for Basic Space Science, in Nsukka, Enugu State, at the weekend, saying the centre is keying into astronomy which will enhance the growth of gross domestic products (GDP) in areas such as medicine, manufacturing, education, agriculture and communication.
Onu pointed out that government’s decision to accord priority to space science development was to improve the quality of life of Nigerians, adding that space science technology will boost telemedicine, agriculture, and manufacturing etc.
He also called on the private sector to take adequate advantage of these products that are coming out from these research centres for commercialization, that would be market driven across the country, reiterating the tremendous importance of space science technology in the development of the economy, to ensure improvement of everyday life of an average Nigerian.

He explained that, through commercialization of research findings, new products and services would be created for consumption by the Nigerian public and the world at large.
Earlier in his welcome address, the director-general, National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA), Prof. Seidu Mohammed, said the centre was established to build capacity that would address the developmental needs of the country in several areas.

He said the construction of the Observatory Complex started 15 years ago, and commended the present administration for seeing to its completion.
A statement by the ministry’s press officer, Henrietta Okokon said the acting director of the centre, Dr. Bonaventure Okere, earlier in his remarks, said that the vision of the Centre was to play strategic roles in the development of space science and technology as a driving force and engine of economic growth and as a major ingredient for human resource and infrastructural development.

It's an interesting subject and you will appreciate the vastness of the universe, astronomical unit which is the Sun-Earth distance. Imagining the distance light travels per second, then light years, and parsecs.
Well, it's not a bad development. We can join them as we can't beat them definitely.

This is bullcrap. Nigeria got no business in space. They should allow technological advanced countries handle that part. There are sectors in science and technology that money and energy should be channelled to nd not space.

They even planted corn in front of the building

I remember also Nigeria sent 2 satellite to space and am yet to see or hear the advantages of those satellite in space or how it affects the common man even if it is to make data cheap or to watch films via satellite.

Really there are other priorities that go ernmwnt should involve in to benefit the common man.

For the now the best we can do is copy and paste until we have solved power problem

I think this can prepare and inspire intelligent and passionate students to take the course and hopefully build on what they’ve learnt abroad! They could even go on a space mission some day!

E surprise me o. I opened the tread hoping to see an abservatory only to see a tiny telescope. Is it this tiny telescope that will be housed inside that dome building that resembles an observatory?
