One of the most common complaints of Android phone users is the high data consumption of their phones. Apps are often updating and often run in the background using up a lot of data you may not even be aware of. Here are some of the things you you can do to check and change your data usage.

Check your mobile data usage
The first thing you'll want to do is to check how much data you're consuming typically so you can know how severe or mild your data usage is.
You'll also see the apps consuming the most data. Follow these steps:

1. Open your device's Settings app.
2. Tap Network & internet and then Data usage.
3. Under "Mobile," you'll see how much total data you use.
4. To see graphs and details, tap Mobile data usage.
- To pick a time period, tap the Down arrow Down arrow.
- To see how much data each app uses, look below the graph.

Keep an eye on your apps
Use of data-hungry apps can seriously affect your data consumption while on your mobile network. You may not realize that Google Photos app might be syncing your photos in the background every time you click one. Social media apps like Facebook,Instagram,Twitter and Snapchat consume a lot of data. Try to avoid watching videos and GIFs in those apps.

Restrict background data usage
Quite a few apps keep consuming your data even when you're not using them or using your phone. You can restrict the amount of background data being used by your phone. Follow these easy steps :

1. Go to Settings >> Data Usage and you can see the statistics for which app is consuming how much of data.
2. Tap on an app, and you can see both the foreground and background data usage of that particular app.
3. If you find that background data is too high for an app and you don’t need the app to stay in the background at all times, tap on “Restrict app background data.” This ensures that the app will consume data only when it is opened and thereby use less data.

Stop Automatic App Updates
Automatic app updates can consume quite a lot of data and it can be quite annoying. You can either stop automatic updates completely or make your phone update apps only when you're on Wi-Fi.

1. Go to Google Play Store
2. Open the sidebar and click on Settings.
3. Click on 'Auto-update apps' and choose your preferred option

Use less mobile data with data saver
To help use less mobile data on a limited data plan, you can turn on data saver. This mode lets most apps and services get background data only via Wi-Fi. Currently active apps and services can use mobile data.
1. Open your device's Settings app .
2. Tap Network & internet and then Data usage and then Data saver.
3. Turn Data saver on or off.
When data saver mode is on, you'll see the Data saver icon in your status bar and a notification at the top of your device's Settings app.
