Yes, you read that right. No, not the first part — you knew that already. I mean the second part: it's time to root for Man City. Pep Guardiola's team are 25-points behind Jürgen Klopp's team in the league. The title is all but sealed. Liverpool need just three more wins to wrap the thing up, nine more making the inevitable a mathematical guarantee. But there's a chance the team could win the league without even playing. And that, despite the thirty-years of hurt, would be a damn shame. With Everton and Crystal Palace next up for the champions-elect, the definitive title-winning match could come against current holders Manchester City on April, 5. But there's a chance that City could hand Liverpool the title before then. If City lose their next three games, which is unlikely, they would hand Klopp and co. the title. And if they lose a couple, Liverpool can win the title away at Goodison Park when they play Everton in the derby next Monday. READ MORE Liverpool's chances of winning the Premier League and final points total predicted after Bournemouth win But Liverpool fans should root for the reverse. They should root for City to win. And they should root for a draw at the Etihad so that the team can clinch the title at home against Aston Villa. It feels like a Liverpool-win-it-at-City narrative is more enticing to the neutrals and the broadcasters than it is for Liverpool or the club's fans. Is there a competitive rivalry between the two clubs? Sure. Is there hatred? Nope. I’m sure there are a bunch of fans who, if we’re talking about the sweetest narrative, would rather clinch the league against Chelsea — exorcising some of the demons of that in 2014; even a guard-of-honour against Chelsea would feel cathartic. Having said that, the recent news that City will (pending appeal) be kicked out of Champions League adds extra spice to the occasion. In terms of narrative, Liverpool subsuming the Champions mantle from City, who may be forced into some form of fire-sale or, at the very least, a rebuild, is almost too delicious. READ MORE Stability among chaos: James Milner is just the man Liverpool need during their season-defining run This year’s title could (probably should) mark the start of a run of championships for the club. With City knee-capped by their off-field issues and no obvious candidate to close the gap, Liverpool should be looking at at least three or four championships in the next five seasons. From a big picture perspective, clinching the title at the Etihad would be the perfect symbol of the changing of the guard: the start of what might prove to be a few lean years for one club and a boom for the other. But that’s really it. It will still mean fewer fans seeing the thing happen in person. There would be no storming of the pitch; fewer once-in-a-lifetime memories — Klopp riding on a sea of fans; Jordan Henderson and Steven Gerrard sharing a tearful embrace (there's a decent fan-fiction series in this, I realise). No matter where and when Liverpool make the title win official, it will be an amazing, pinch-yourself, where-were-you-when moment. But doing it at Anfield would add an extra something something that's hard to explain and even harder to exaggerate. To get that, Liverpool need to root for City to win. |
