This article is quite lengthy but it’s worth it. Have you ever wondered why farmers raise broilers and why everyone wants broilers for consumption?, this is because they grow so fast and achieve the desired weight in less than 6 weeks and they are ready to be slaughtered.

Consumers have driven farmers to the edge and all farmers are in the game of getting as much weight and size of chicken in very little period of time.

To get this weight and size Farmers are spending so much on Multivitamins, antibiotics, formulated feeds while trying to contain diseases by having sleepless nights, even amidst these practices, several boilers drop dead.

Have you ever heard of the term “withdrawal period” on drugs from the vet store?, “Withdrawal period refers to the minimum period of time from administering the last dose of medication and the production (slaughtering) of birds. A lot of consumers now know this and this makes them frown at the consumption of boilers, most consumers now ask for noilers cause they believe there’s less drugs administered.

Please understand that I’m not condemning broilers farmers, I’m just trying to state that as farmers or intending farmers, You can attain 2.5 to 3kg of chicken weight without stress, 24 hours supervision, staffs and extra hand, buying so much formulated feed, drugs etc

Nigerians frown at our local (indigenous chicken) because of the size, cause it doesn’t look like broilers, cause they don’t command respect like broilers. I’ll state just 12 of the uncountable advantages of our local chickens over broilers and other foreign genetically made birds;

1. feeding (formulated feeds) is completely ruled out when rearing local chickens. Nevertheless, you can attain as much as 2.5kg or even more from breeding local chickens with some little tricks

2. Cost of buying DOC ( day old chicks) between the prices of 250 - 500 is ruled out, All you need to start up rearing local chickens is 15 to 20 hens. In few months, the only problem you will be having is space to contain their number. You could have as much as 100 chicks if you start with good breeder local chickens.

3. Our indigenous (local chickens) are perfect incubators for hatching turkey, guinea fowl, ducks eggs as long as you have good breeder hens, Our hens have been raised and trained to lay, incubate and hatch eggs all year round.

They are so good that they will not only hatch them, but mother them, the thought that their eggs must not be touched are all myths. We have experimented so much on local chickens.

4. They do not need any housing, Unless you have other animals that could harm them (dogs and other higher animals). Local chickens will always figure themselves out,A tree is a perfect shelter for them.

5. They are perfect for getting rid of bugs and worms if you have snails and other animals that can be affected by bugs and worms on your farm .

6. No vaccines needed, no drugs.

7. People who know the advantages of eating healthy prefer to eat organically raised local chickens as their taste are obviously satisfying.

8. There is a ready market to sell your local chickens when they are ready to be sold. Suya hausa men make use of local chickens strictly

9. Their eggs are edible and more healthy with less cholesterol as they do not feed on chicken feeds which has fertilizers and other toxic materials. You can have as much as two crates of eggs daily for eating or to sell to fellow breeders without giving layers mash
10. They do not make a mess like boiler chickens as they do not excrete so much waste because they eat so little .
11. You do not need extra hands or so much staff to rear local chickens. Just 1 person can take care of more than 400 local chickens without stress.
12. You do not by day old chicks costing up to 400 Naira per one, all you need to start is 15 mother hens and a cock, and as well have the knowledge of raising them and a few tips from us, in few months, you will have over 150 to 200 chickens

So would you choose 6 weeks to 12 weeks of tiring vaccination routine and high cost of feeding and drugs with a very close margin between your cost price and profit OR rear local chickens without stress, You can work in a office and leave 100 local chickens to roam all day and come back home without worries, no starter mash, no finisher, no vaccines. and you can attain as much as 2.5kg, 3kg in 5 or 6 months.. We have breeder local Chickens for sale and local hybrid cocks for consumption (live or slaughtered and processed) their prices differ as they are of different sizes and ages.
