Just like the title of the thread suggests, I will like to know how profitable web designing as a freelancer is.

Since this lockdown started, I have had a lot of free time which I will plan to utilize in learning web design. But I'm skeptical on whether it's worth it and how much I can make from it

I will be learning it from scratch as I have no IT background. In fact, I'm an art student, so I want to know whether the effort will be worth it.

I will like to get more insight from gurus and other web designers here on how much money I can make as a freelancer from this.

Or should I face my books?

Thanks for the input bro. But will I kinda get discouraged when I see people advertising that they build websites for 5k or people creating threads advertising that they build websites but are ignored.. It makes it seem like people don't need websites and the stress learning isn't worth it.

Pls can you explain more on ways I can meet potential clients after learning and the average pay. Thanks once more for your input tho.

That 5k stuff does not make sense, no web developer will build a website or even a blog for that amount. It's either you do it for free or collect better like 50k upwards or go with client's budget.

Don't be discouraged, myself I'm learning web development but I don't get discouraged with other web developers advertising for as low as 5k. First they don't get clients because their target market isn't here.

To get good clients, you need to be innovative. You can use social media ads, ppc, search ads and send out proposals to companies and firms you believe will need a Website. It's a little more than what I typed buh if you know digital marketing( which I'm also learning), you shouldn't have much problem finding clients.

your own areas of specialisation may not be building up of website. ur own may be in digital marketing, software developing, social media marketing and blogging or vlogging. it depend on which areas you can deliver.

The so called folks who do it for 5k have so many things in common. They are likely failed bloggers who taught they could diversify just because they use drag and drop tools to create their own websites.

The cheapest theme/script/template or plugin costs at least N10,000, if you're buying the right way, that is. So, where then are they getting theirs from?

Here are a few pro tips:

1. Take your time and learn properly.
2. Never take the short cut to doing things.
3. Choose one of two sectors to focus on (corporate and publishers). Breaking through the corporate world and getting clients is difficult but it pays way better. You are likely to charge between N100k upward for a five-day project. With publishers, you're likely to get horrible propositions and crazy pleas to 'help them'.
4. I wouldn't recommend you you Nairaland as your ad source. The environment is pretty toxic and the farther your business is away from here, the healthier it is from your brand.
5. Register a Business Name and let potential customers know you mean business.
6. If you have to pay, do so and gain better experience.
7. You'll need to be consistent to break even, so I'll advise you don't overestimate your ability and always understand a customer's 'dream' before taking on their project.
8. Always set a standard. If you're choosing high end audience to focus on, this will help you a whole lot.
9. Always plan to end well with a client. Doing so means you're likely to get referrals. Referrals are most I get these days, which simplifies sending portfolios time and time again.
