I recently decided to learn some basic things on mapping but I don't know how to go about it. Gurus in the house kindly help me out.

Ok. First I don't think you can get access to any GIS, but Google maps has an extensive Python api for what you might need. You can further explain what you are trying to do.

it's pretty easy.

You should start by learning the basics of QGIS.

they're loads of online tutorials and videos on YouTube.

if you're serious, you should have the basic concepts down in a month or so.

you could also learn Python and SQL (PostgreSQL to be exact); these skills make spatial analysis easier.
