We have discussed Patents and Trademarks and will now be examining Copyrights. In Nigeria, Copyrights are governed by the Copyright Act LFN 2004 and regulated by the Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC). A copyright is simply an exclusive right given to the originator of a creative work to exploit it for a limited period (usually 100years). Works that can be subject to copyright include literary and artistic works, works of songwriters, cinematographers, photographers and other creatives. A right in Copyright arises upon expression, whether registered or not. But registration is advised to ensure certainty in cases of a dispute over the creative work and for prolonged protection.
