The Differences Between Using USSD or Short Code SMS for Voting Competitions

USSD and SMS can be used without having data on your phone

USSD debits bank account while SMS debits phone credit

USSD service must be enabled in your banking profile while SMS does not require enablement

USSD minimum debit is N50 from bank account while SMS can debit as low as N10 from your phone credit

USSD charges a bank fee to vote while SMS simply charges the exact amount without extra

Both USSD and SMS can have network issues intermittently

USSD and SMS can be used to perform multiple voting

USSD can vote higher amounts while Short Code SMS can only charge a maximum of N100 at a go.

As per revenue benefits, USSD pays out 30% or more in less than three (3) days. SMS pays less than 15% and the revenue can take up to 90 days to pay.

Since not everyone enables USSD on their banking profile, we introduced what we called Virtual Account.

What is Virtual Bank Account?
Virtual Account is a real ten digit bank account number provisioned by Providus Bank. This account number is unique and dynamic in its operation. Even though USSD was provisioned for each contestant, we observed that in Nigeria, not all bank account holders have USSD feature enabled on their bank account profile and hence this alternative. So, why do I like Virtual Account? It allows the general public to vote with large sums with ease. The virtual account also bears the contestant name or nickname. It is also dynamic in the sense that it uses the unit vote amount and divides it across any amount paid into the contestant account and then automatically converts it into vote counts which is in turn credited to that contestant. This is indeed amazing and very innovative!
