What does automatic screw machine do? How can I use it? Why will it help me?

The automatic screw machine is a special type of lathe, usually used to machine small and medium-sized parts from various sizes of bars. Most automatic screw machines have multiple sliders and spindles, which are equipped with various types of tools (drills, forming tools, milling cutters, taps, molds, etc.). This enables the machine to process a large number of turned parts with minimal supervision and high precision.

There are two main types of automatic screw machines: Brown & Sharpe or turret and Swiss. Each may have 1 to 8 spindles.

Brown & Sharpe/Turret type screw machines are no longer actively produced, but due to their reliability and long life, they are still in operation in hundreds of processing workshops. It is cam operated.

The Swiss screw machine is very precise and can control the tolerance within a few microns. Most Swiss machine tools have an auxiliary spindle with a powered tool and a guide bush next to the cutting tool to increase rigidity.

One operator can manage multiple different automatic screw machines at the same time, intervening only during setup and conversion. Multi-spindle screw machines are much faster because each spindle works simultaneously and independently. Due to the use of guide bushes and chucks, these machine tools can achieve higher accuracy than other types of lathes, thereby reducing the space between the workpiece fixture and the tool, thereby improving rigidity and accuracy.

How does screw machine work?

The screw machine was originally designed to produce screws, in which the bar is firmly fixed in a moving headstock and rotated against a fixed cutting tool. Whether it is CNC or cam operation, the screw machine will have the following components: base, headstock, hollow work spindle, front tool post, rear tool post and turret. Many people will also have a final tool.

Common Industries:

The automatic screw machine is widely used in almost all industries, especially for very small or thin workpieces. Swiss screw machines are widely used for precision parts in the medical and orthopedic industries.

Automatic screw machining is a manufacturing process that employs the use of an automatic lathe to create small, high-precision turned parts. The process is highly versatile and reliable, producing pieces from different materials and finishes with greater consistency than other mass-production methods.

Screw machining equipment consists of five key components: the base, the headstock, one to eight spindles, front and rear slides, and the turret. Different variations of this machine design are available to suit various production applications. If you need screw machines, turn to the experts at Calvindude. Equipped with over three decades of industry experience and advanced screw machines, we have the knowledge, skills, and tools to deliver quality parts and products that meet your specifications.
