The widely accepted scientific term Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), sometimes referred to as Environmental Impact Statement (EIS), was officially coined in the 1969 National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), which was passed by the United States Congress, following the environmental disasters in England and the United States of America.

The Exxon Valdez Oil Spill in England and Love Canal Toxic Waste Incident in California, practically spurred the invention of EIA, which encompasses the tending of matters that concern our environmental planning, aesthetics, design and protection.

EIA, which became active on January 1, 1970, has continued to provide guidance towards developmental projects and research support concerning environmental issues through various institutions, notably the Council on Environmental Quality (CEQ) and the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP).
