Google And The End. by databoy247(m): 1:21pm On Oct 08, 2011
It baffles me alot to see how google expands by taking out their competition by acquisition. They are taking control of everything that's related to the internet and i feel we are getting to the point where the internet will be useless without google! Have you watched a movie where the global economy or lifestyle rests on the shoulders of a giant computer program where a small misharp crumbles human existence? Now google wants to control 40k businesses in nigeria through its GNBO stuff. We cant compete with them, but we can shut them out by creating our own system. Or we help them fasten the END of days!!

Many of your Nigeria business people will even be overjoyed to work with google - everyone wants google cash.

I can predict that google will soon acquire NL, once you have the crowd and traffic you are for google. Its like blood money, enjoy it while it lasts for the end is imminent. cool Internet rules 60 % of the global economy, and google rules the internet (at least 70%). Pheeeew
Re: Google And The End. by dhtml1(m): 9:03pm On Oct 08, 2011
And if that happens?
Re: Google And The End. by yamakuza: 4:22am On Oct 09, 2011
If 40k is lion's share of the market, then naija websphere is indeed small.

Only hosters should be scared though.

Designers and programmers will still be needed to put up the sites.

That is exactly where i am driving at. . . it is a +++ for good web developers.

case study 1, if google acquires all the ads network/providers, then they tighten their policies which MAY affect Nigerians, 90 percent of nigerians who depend on adsense for a living will go hungry! The effects of an economic dictator.

I wasn't mincing words when I said that google wants to colonize the webosphere and the internet at.large. They're conquering every web sub-sector one by one. Very soon the internet will be renamed "Google internet" or simply "Google".
Re: Google And The End. by dhtml1(m): 11:46am On Oct 09, 2011
@databoy, whether they conquer Nigeria webspace or not does not really bother me for many reasons.

What are you going to do about it? You need to get better and plan ahead. If you can see the future,
then you should start planning ahead before you are overtaken by the inevitable.

it's called capitalism folks. Dog-eat-dog, shark-fest in action. Get used to it.

I am actually not concerned about google taking over everything. Microsoft tried it and guess what happened - antitrust lawsuits all over the place. Besides, someone will eventually come up. And this is where my concern kicks in: As Africans, we are more on borrow-borrow than come up with anything unique. If google does actually take over particularly in Africa, it would be our fault as we let them in.

If you cant beat them, join them.

How to join Google? Becoming a Certified Google Apps Specialist is a good start.

As per the Adsense, guess we need to learn to do things right.

Too much copy n paste on the 'Net these days,[s]all in the name of Article Writing/Marketing[/s]

What specifically do you mean by doing things right when it comes to adsense?

i want to believe part of the problems publishers have with adsense stems from the quality of their content.

I cant count the number of times i've had the same information recycled to me in different shades of english while searching online.

No more original(i)ty. Just copy and paste. How will the internet grow?

I think that abuse is what Google is trying to curb by being strict with Adsense.

What is so funny here?
Re: Google And The End. by databoy247(m): 12:41am On Oct 10, 2011
The strictness of google is just in the excess. Originality counts here! If only Nigerians can come up with an original concept of ads management for Nigerians, google will lose the nigerian market. We really dont need a thousand policies from google before we earn their pennies. Thats called being cheap! Another major problem we have is that we dont value what we have, just like adplacers.com
Re: Google And The End. by dhtml1(m): 7:41am On Oct 10, 2011
So what are you going to do about this amigo? Other than lament?

the Nigerian market in ecommerce is intangible enough for Google to ignore. Exactly how much do Nigerians spend online anyway, and how much of that on adverts, compared to other markets.

Those with deep pockets in Nigeria already work with multinational ad agencies.

The key thing here is reach. Any Nigerian alternative needs to have the reach of Google or Yahoo. Nairaland is the closest i can think of with such clout but for some reason, they are not towing that line.

Lets not forget that with GNBO, its only a matter of time before Google Checkout becomes available to Nigerians, with attendant benefits (e.g. Paypal alternative)
Re: Google And The End. by databoy247(m): 4:00pm On Oct 10, 2011
There is a bright side to this, that is, with the advent of this GNBO and other google-nigeria initiatives and partnerships, maybe and just maybe, there will be a lift on the ban against Nigerians from making use of highly sought after payment processors like paypal and the freedom to do business with Nigerians.

But the bottom line remains the same: Nigeria is still growing (and is still a baby) in the cyber world. The earlier we learn to stand on our own by creating our own portals and applications (thank God for outstanding programmers especially here on NL) instead of holding strong to google for dependence, income and stability, the better for our internet webosphere.

We have a big problem of NOT patronizing our own services and inventions.

Example 1:

Everyone wants to make use of getresponse and aweber for email marketing. BUT we have clicknreach.com which is effective and cheap!

Example 2:

There is a standard body created for web designers of which members will be screened before joining to ensure credibility. I am talking of webmastersofafrica.com created by a Nigeria (i hope i am right, so correct me if am wrong), yet we as web designers DONT patronize them (me inclusive).

Example 3:

We always clamor for godaddy and hostgator, etc while we have reliable web hosts in Nigeria like trudigits and syskay, etc. Personally, i patronize home made hosting companies>>>syskay and theExpertHost.

We have a few originals here in Nigeria, why dont we promote and patronize them?

Google is the best, but believe me, we can let them understand that WITHOUT them, we can still excel! That should at least start giving us some credibility. cool cool

Re: Google And The End. by databoy247(m): 9:37am On Nov 04, 2011
Google has nothing to do with your success as a web designer. The major strongholds of google are its adsense program (alternatives in place) and its search (which unfortunately cannot be substituted). We can work on enjoying the benefits of the former (alternatives). A rep of adplacers ought to be here oh!
