Return to Play

Author : Dele Bolade Samson Babalola

Abstract

The decision-making process for a player’s return to play involves collaboration among various stakeholders, including the individual player, the sports medicine, coaching, and performance teams.

Evaluating the return to preinjury levels encompasses a blend of clinical, functional, and psychological criteria. In the initial stages of rehabilitation, prioritizing physio care and gym-based physical preparation is essential to minimize discrepancies between injured and uninjured body parts. Monitoring strength development and pain perceptions becomes pivotal, guiding the formulation of training prescriptions.

As rehabilitation progresses, the integration of global positioning tracking systems during on-field practice emerges as a valuable tool to incrementally align training load with maximal match demands.

The progression of workload should transition from highly controlled environments to very high unpredictable soccer-specific exercises, emphasizing high-intensity work.

Training load should ultimately mirror the peak performance demands experienced during official matches.

Players need to readapt to the customary training workload sustained in preinjury periods, encompassing both volume and intensity corresponding to official matches. Furthermore, stakeholders must identify acute and chronic training-induced physical and psychological adaptations throughout the entire training routine.

This comprehensive understanding aids the decision-making process, facilitating a return to full training participation without restrictions.
