GENERAL THREAD-- Methods Of Flat/hidden Roof Construction In Nigeria by Gabrokpara001(op): 9:00am On Aug 29, 2024
These days, there is a sudden flourish in the adoption of flat/hidden roof in most building projects in Nigeria. This is as a result of the difficult economic situation of the country hence building owners & developers re seeking for more cost effective & functional homes. Flat/hidden roofs offer a cheaper alternative to the traditional high/hip roof while bringing in a more beautiful look.

In the thread below lets look and discuss about the two most common way of achieving this

In the thread below lets look and discuss about the two most common way of achieving this
1 Flat roof with reinforced concrete Gutter.

This method of flat roof is usually hidden inside a parapet wall i.e (A wall starting from the last course of the normal building storey, usually 1m/1.2m high & covers the sloped roof round the perimeter of the building). This method adopts a reinforced concrete gutter/slab concept. The goal here is for the roof to be inside the parapet wall then it sends water to the gutter/concrete deck in which it rest on ,then the gutter channels the collected water down away from the roof.

Adv of this concept is that is is more waterproof and most likely to stand the test of time.

Dis adv is that it is the most cost consuming method of all flat roof concepts, but definitely cheaper when compared to the traditional high/hip roof concept .

2 Flat roof inserted inside the parapet wall.

The method is similar to the reinforced concrete gutter/deck method, the difference is that it doesn't use the concept of a deck collecting water from the roof. Rather, the roof membrane/woodwork/carcass is connected/inserted into the parapet wall then the roof slopes down to an open back end. The goal here is for the roof to collect water and send to the back while resting on the parapet wall.

Adv. it is generally more straight forward and economic when compared to the Flat roof with deck/gutter.

Dis adv if the joints or points of connection is not properly done water ll sip into the building, also it MAY not last the test of time.
