Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State has said he can’t hand over to an unintelligent person.

Obaseki said this during the Peoples Democratic Party’s campaign in Akoko-Edo Local Government Area of the State to canvass votes for the party’s candidate, Dr. Asue Ighodalo, in the September 21 election.

According to him, the PDP has the best candidate in the election, urging the people to vote for credibility and competence.

Obaseki said his government has pursued reforms in education, agriculture, sports, technology, and health, among others,

“These gains and successes would be derailed if left in the hands of an unintelligent, inexperienced or incompetent person whose only aim in power is to share the common patrimony of the people among the political class”.

“We have reformed the education sector through the EdoBEST programme and ensured your daughter headed the State’s Edo State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB). We can’t hand over EdoBEST to unintelligent people.”

On his part, Ighodalo charged the electoral umpire on free, fair, and credible polls in the State.

“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu said he will support free, fair and credible elections as he is a democrat that believes in the credible process,” he said.

I don't understand. Is this not supposed to be a democracy? Is it not the good people of Edo state that will decide who will govern them at the polls? What do you mean you can't hand over, as if Edo is your personal property?

This is one of the most absurd and preposterous statement coming from someone who should guard his utterances. The so-called democracy has been made a joke in this part of the world.

What is the relevance of democracy when the option is an incompetent candidate?

Democracy does start and end at the election booth, but at the stage when a candidate is selected by a political party and the conduct of a political party to select a competent candidate.

It might be undemocratic, but if the potential candidate is flawed and limited, then undemocratic decisions are necessary. Had Nigerians stopped the transfer of power to the incompetent Buhari and Tinubu (APC), then the country would not be in freefall today. It was obvious that Buhari was incompetent, and Tinubu was a known criminal and a hopeless case.

He has obviously made himself the sole Power broker in Edo state, forgetting that the onus to decide who governs the state, lies with the people.
He can only recommend a candidate, if he deems such person fit to deliver on the given mandate. He statement was rather dictatorial, and should be condemned in it entirety.
