Word processing is often defined as ‘’automated typing’’. Today, the term word processing is used to describe an entire system of streamlined work procedures, automated equipment, and skilled people. Although, the word processor looks and acts like a typewriter, it differs in the number of important ways. Firstly, unlike the standard typewriter, the word processor has an internal memory that record and stores data, for later retrieval and use. Secondly, the word processor has sophisticated editing features that allow the user to add, delete, or move characters, words, or entire blocks of text. Thirdly, the word processors have a video display screen, similar to a television screen that enables the word processor equipment operator to see what has been typed and how it will appear on the printed page before it is actually printed out. Fourthly, the word processor can automatically print out whatever has been recorded over and over again. |
