Pepper Leaf Curl Disease (PLCD)

Pepper Leaf Curl Disease (PLCD) is one of the biggest problems in pepper farming.

A lot of pepper farmers have faced or are currently facing this disease, which is capable of ruining an entire pepper farm.

These viruses are transmitted mainly by insects such as whiteflies, mites, and aphids.

The viral disease spreads primarily through whiteflies. Hot and dry weather encourages whitefly breeding.

Also, infected plant residues and nearby host plants promote the spread.

This virus can spread through the farm by whiteflies feeding on infected plants and transmitting the virus to healthy ones.

Contaminated tools and hands can also spread the disease. Buying nurseries or nursery transplants already carrying the virus is another source of infection.

The best way to control this disease is by planting seeds that are resistant to it.

Know the seeds and nurseries you are buying and using for your project.

Start early, from the nursery stage, to begin spraying insecticides. Don’t wait until you start seeing symptoms.

You can use insecticides with Imidacloprid, Lambda-cyhalothrin, Abamectin as active ingredients, or Neem oil.

Prevention is better than cure.

Also, rotate insecticides to avoid resistance.

Avoid growing pepper near other solanaceous crops like tomatoes and eggplants.

Keep your farm neat. Maintain good field hygiene by removing weeds. Remove and burn infected plants to stop and minimize the spread.

Mulching, crop rotation, and intercropping can help reduce whitefly movement.

Wishing all farmers a bountiful harvest this planting season.
