ASUU Suspends Two-week Warning Strike by Nemere2020(op): 10:12am On Oct 22, 2025
The Academic Staff Union of Universities has announced the suspension of its ongoing two-week warning strike.

The National President of ASUU, Prof. Chris Piwuna, made this known in an ongoing press briefing in Abuja on Wednesday.

According to Piwuna, the decision stemmed from the meeting of the National Executive Council meeting which was held overnight and ended by 4:00 am on Wednesday.

Piwuna noted that the union decided to embark on the strike due to the failure of the government to meet its demands on time.

“We’ve had useful engagements with representatives of the government to consider the response to the draft renegotiation of the 2009 agreements. However, we are definitely not where we were prior to the commencement of the strike.

“The union acknowledged that the government returned to the negotiation table. While noting that a lot more work is still required, NEC came to the conclusion that the ongoing strike should be reviewed. The decision to review the strike action was a result of efforts by our students, parents, and the Nigeria Labour Congress.

“Consequently, NEC resolved to suspend the warning strike to reciprocate the efforts of well-meaning Nigerians.”

Recall that ASUU declared a total and comprehensive warning strike starting from Monday, October 13.

ASUU is currently demanding the conclusion of the renegotiated 2009 FGN-ASUU agreement, the release of the withheld three and a half months’ salaries, sustainable funding of public universities, revitalisation of public universities, and cessation of the victimisation of lecturers in LASU, Prince Abubakar Audu University, and FUTO.

Others are payment of outstanding 25-35% salary arrears, payment of promotion arrears for over four years and release of withheld third-party deductions (cooperative contributions, union check-off dues).

ASUU went on strike because of long govt promises and now they have suspended the strike based on govt promises. Lols...

ASUU seem to be re-learning the govt/political ropes, after the 2022 strike. I guess the suspended strike is a litmus test.

You suspended strike that is not up to the said time you planned? This is very strange and not professional.
Government will never take you seriously anymore.
Tinubu does not care, best is to do what they can do for sake of poor students and themselves.

ASUU thought it was during pdp days ,when education was taken seriously..since APC came with buharia who allegedly don't have certificate and tinubu whose certificates are questionable..the only man in the world who started college one year before it was established...APC government have zero regards for education and if ASUU insist on going on strike they will be wasting their time

How can the government be struggling to keep to an agreement reached in 2009?

What kind of irresponsible people are running this country?

Hiking fees drastically, with the economy in decline, is surely something that PDP didn’t do.

Most tertiary institutions in the country have hiked their fees by over 150 %, putting serious strains on the finances of parents and guardians who also have to contend with the poor state of the economy which has reduced purchasing power and savings.

Checks by Vanguard Learning in public universities across the country show that the increment in obligatory fees, which started late last year is continuing, as a new session starts in some schools this January.

Only on January 6, this year, for instance, the Federal University of Technology, Akure, FUTA, Ondo State came out with a proposal to hike fees by over 100%.

Could you please explain why responsible people allow only the irresponsible ones among them to emerge into public service positions?

He doesn’t know the cost of life, the price of the bean, of the fish, of the flour, of the rent, of the shoes and of the medicine, all depends on political decisions. The political illiterate is so stupid that he is proud and swells his chest saying that he hates politics.

The slowpoke doesn’t know that, from his political ignorance is born the prostitute, the abandoned child, and the worst thieves of all, the bad politician, corrupted and flunky of the national and multinational companies.”

Its their style , its ridiculous that ASUU hasn't come up with a more noble idea to press home their demands .
its Archaic to be embarking on strikes every now and then when their members are part of the moral decadence faced by the nation.
Re: ASUU Suspends Two-week Warning Strike by yorosstores: 10:58am On Oct 22, 2025
ASUU should be ashamed of itself — it’s become known more for strikes than solutions.

If the same tactics didn’t work in the 1980s, they won’t work now. The union should look inward and find smarter ways to resolve its issues — that’s what a true learning institution does. How many real, groundbreaking innovations that could solve national problems have come out of our many universities?

Universities were locked for over six months when Yar'Adua and Goatluck Jonathan were in government with their torn PDP umbrella. Is that not the reason why you couldn't graduate ?

Can you suggest one noble way or method they should use in pressing their demands? Since you know too much.

The same pdp that did not fufil the 2009 agreement as well.

Also under the same pdp, the universities were still a mess as they are now
