One of the first questions people ask when considering cassava farming is simple: “How many tons of cassava can one acre of land actually produce?”

It’s a valid question — because yield is what determines profit. Unfortunately, this is also where many people get confused. Some hear exaggerated figures online, while others assume cassava farming is automatically profitable just because the crop is popular.

The truth is more balanced.

Cassava yield per acre depends on how the farm is set up, where the land is located, and how well it is managed. Two farms of the same size can produce very different results, even when planted in the same year.

For investors who are not farmers, especially working professionals, retirees, or Nigerians in the diaspora, understanding realistic cassava yields is important before committing money to farmland or farm projects.

In this post, we’ll break down:
- What an average acre of cassava produces in Nigeria
- Why some farms underperform
- What is achievable with proper management
- And how cassava farming can be approached as a structured investment rather than trial-and-error farming

This way, you can make informed decisions, whether you plan to farm personally or invest through a professionally managed farmland model.

What Is The Average Cassava Yield Per Acre in Nigeria?

On average, most cassava farms in Nigeria produce between 10 and 15 metric tons per acre. This figure reflects what is commonly seen on smallholder and semi-managed farms, where traditional methods are still widely used.

In many rural areas, cassava is planted with:
- Little or no soil testing
- Minimal fertilizer application
- Irregular weeding
- Delayed harvesting

Under these conditions, yields are usually modest. Some farms even produce below 10 tons per acre, especially where soil fertility has been depleted over time.

However, it’s important to understand that these averages do not represent the full potential of cassava. With improved stem varieties, proper land preparation, correct spacing, timely weeding, and professional oversight, cassava yields can be significantly higher than the national average.

That is why you often see wide differences in reported figures. One farmer may complain that cassava is not profitable, while another records strong harvests from a similar acreage.

Factors That Determine Cassava Yield Per Acre
The number of tons of cassava an acre can produce is influenced by several key factors. Ignoring any of these often leads to poor harvests, even when the land looks suitable.

1. Soil Quality and Location

Cassava performs best on well-drained, fertile soils. Areas with a strong agricultural history, like parts of Oyo State, naturally support better yields. Overused or poorly prepared land will struggle, regardless of the crop variety.

2. Cassava Variety (Stem Selection)

Not all cassava stems are the same. Improved varieties developed for:

- Higher tuber weight
- Disease resistance
- Uniform growth

All of these factors above can outperform local varieties by a wide margin. Many low-yield farms rely on recycled stems without proper selection.

3. Land Preparation and Spacing

Proper clearing, ridging or mounding, and correct plant spacing directly affect tuber development. Overcrowding reduces tuber size, while poor land preparation limits root expansion.

4. Farm Management and Maintenance

Regular weeding, pest control, and soil nutrient management are essential. Cassava may look “hardy,” but neglect reduces yield drastically.

5. Harvest Timing

Harvesting too early reduces tuber weight, while delayed harvesting can lead to losses from rot or reduced quality. Timing matters.

When these factors are properly handled, cassava farming moves from subsistence-level output to commercial-scale production.

For investors who don’t want to handle the farming themselves, working with professionally managed farms can make a huge difference in yield and income.

On such farms, where land is prepared correctly, improved cassava varieties are planted, and maintenance is done by experienced farm managers, you can realistically expect:

- 10–15 tons per acre on average, even in the first year
- With optimal care, 20+ tons per acre is achievable

It’s important to note that yields vary depending on factors like rainfall, soil fertility, and the specific cassava variety planted. However, professional management removes most of the guesswork that individual investors face.

This is why models like Ikore Farm & Resort are attractive:
- You own the land outright with proper documentation (CofO)
- You receive a share of the harvest proceeds
- You don’t need prior farming experience

In short, professional management translates directly to higher, more predictable yields, which in turn increases your returns per acre.

The average price of fresh cassava tubers in Nigeria is roughly ₦30,000–₦45,000 per ton (prices vary by region and season).

For example: 15 tons × ₦35,000 = ₦525,000 per acre
Therefore 20 tons × ₦40,000 = ₦800,000 per acre

In a managed farm investment like Ikore Farm, investors receive 80% of the harvest proceeds after management costs.

Using the above example: ₦525,000 × 80% = ₦420,000
₦800,000 × 80% = ₦640,000 per acre annually
