MAROKO or MAKOKO?

Maroko, a densely populated suburb in Lagos, Nigeria, was indeed demolished in July 1990 under the military administration of Colonel Raji Rasaki, who served as Lagos State administrator from 1988 to 1992

Demolition Details
The eviction displaced over 300,000 residents from around 10,000-30,000 structures, many of whom were low-income families living in informal settlements

This followed an earlier failed attempt in 1980 under civilian governor Lateef Jakande, which sparked riots.

The area, originally inhabited by groups like the Ijaw, Ilaje, and Yoruba, was razed using bulldozers and fires to prevent rebuilding

Official Reason
The government justified the action as urban renewal, citing Maroko's location below sea level, lack of basic amenities, flooding risks, and uninhabitability—labelling it a "slum" prone to disease

Post-demolition, the land was transformed into upscale areas such as; Oniru, Lekki Phase 1 and 2.

Minor Caveats
While "urban renewal" matches the touted rationale, sources also highlight environmental unsanitary conditions as a key factor, though critics view it as displacement for elite development without adequate compensation.

No major contradictions appear across historical accounts.

Maroko — Lekki Peninsula

Maroko was deemed uninhabitable due to environmental risks.

The Lagos State government under Colonel Raji Rasaki cited the suburb's low elevation—about 1.5 meters above sea level—which made it highly prone to flooding and submersion during heavy rains, as seen in the massive 1990 floods from 16 days of nonstop rainfall.

Sanitation and health concerns were key factors. Authorities highlighted the area's unsanitary conditions, including a lack of proper waste disposal, potable water, and basic infrastructure, creating risks for disease epidemics in the densely packed informal settlement.

Security issues contributed to the decision. A government security report linked Maroko to the April 1990 Orkar coup attempt, alleging it was planned there, amplifying pressures alongside environmental threats.
