MORE OF MY LIFE EXPERIENCE! . It was year 2005, back in Benin City Edo state. I was combining school and working as a conductor during weekends. Within 6 months I have started driving. One early Saturday morning, I loaded from our park at New Benin market to Ikpoba Hill with the last bus stop being Agbor park or Depot. A passenger signal she wants to alight at First Upstair bus stop which is about three bus stops away before Agbor park. I stopped and she came down, as I was about to move. A bike carrying two guys was coming from inside the street with speed, and there was a woman behind them shouting thief thief help thief thief! As they were about to speed pass me, I deliberately hit them from behind and they fell inside a gutter and were writhing in pains and couldn't get up. My passengers were shouting "you don kill person driver, you don kill person" Fear immediately grip me, I didn't know what to do, whether to speed off or wait. . My passengers, thinking it was an accident not knowing it was deliberate asked me to wait let them go assist them, then came the woman from the street shouting thief thief, saying we shouldn't help them, that they're thieves that just snatch her bag containing money she wants to take to the market. All this things were happening within few minutes and the robbers due to pain couldn't get up to think of running away. My passengers wanted to descend on them, but just as they were about to. Policemen from Oregbeni police station were patrolling and saw the incident, they quickly parked and asked what was going? They were told and the woman pointed at her bag with one of them. They went to where the guys were crying in pains inside the gutter and retrieve the woman's bag, and also saw two locally made pistol with them. Immediately they saw those guns and retrieve it, they shot the three of them on their legs and loaded them inside their patrol van. . They gave the woman her bag which she said contains 120k she wants to travel to Lagos with and buy goods, and they drove the three guys straight to the station. The woman was full of thanks to me, but I was afraid. Many things ran thru my mind. What if those guys have marked my bus, what if they have seen my face. But I later assured myself they didn't see nothing cus 1. It was still early morning and 2. The pains they were in couldn't have even made them have time to look at me or my bus. My passengers boarded back and I also carried the woman to drop her at Agbor park where she can get a bus to New Benin and then to Lagos. She later gave me 1k which I refused at first but with her insistence I collect. So guys did I do the right thing by hitting those thieves, would I have been responsible for their death if they had died? . Lastly to my Benin peeps and those staying in that Ramat park and Agbor park axis, are this funny bus stops still in existence? Wahala junction First upstairs Santana/akpu junction Cus it's been years I last visited Benin City. I wouldn't do that if it was me... The matter could have escalated very quickly and that action could have come back to hunt you. You are very lucky it didn't. For one it could have been a false alarm. What if it was and the guys were laying dead inside the gutter? Maybe you would have been typing this from prison because nothing you say would have extricated you in court. Those police men were also wrong to have shot them. That's extrajudicial! |

brain54:Hmm.... You are very right. That was my initial thought which brought the fear in me when my passengers were shouting I have killed somebody. But thank God it came out to be true they were thieves. But why did you say the police were wrong with their action? |

Shooting them in the leg despite them being criminals is wrong... It's police brutality and excessive use of force. The right thing to have done was take them to the police station where they would have been processed to court. Shooting them in the leg is nothing but jungle justice from those who are supposed to maintain the law and order! |

Last time I was in Ika South was 2 years ago. I guess those junctions you mentioned are still very much in existence. Back to your story.... U would have lived with regret all through your life if the two boys were lynched by the mob. Besides, who knows if they're dead by now? Why should the police shoot already wounded boys? U know say if d boys don mud,you hand dey inside? Kukuma pray God to forgive you o Kalulu44: |

brain54:Hmm.... The reason why I asked is, back in early 90s which I know very well, police doesn't waste time in killing armed robbers found with guns on them. I have witnessed it very well back then |

Kalulu44:Oh sure I know it happens... Especially more frequently some years back. Some units like sars were particularly more notorious for that. It still happens now but less frequently I should think. Mostly in the south. So I'm not saying it didn't happen. I just saying its extra judicial killing and it's wrong. People ought to go through the right process of the law to face justice fairly and equitably not jungle justice mob attack! |

Kalulu44:You did right my brother, the likes of those guys do not need to be on our streets, imagine the trauma the woman would've gone through had they successfully escaped with her labor sweat.....good on you for ridding the society of those theee hooligans ![]() The policemen on their path should be the ones feeling guilty for shooting the robbers in their vulnerable positions, that's extrajudicial and should not happen if we have a working system ![]() |
