Boko Haram Used Armed Drones To Strike Army Convoy, Kill Colonel, Others In Monguno, Military Source Says

The attack on Nigerian troops of Sector 3 under Operation Hadin Kai in Borno by terrorists was carried out using armed drones to strike the army convoy, a military source has said.

SaharaReporters had reported the killing of Army personnel, including Colonel I.A. Mohammed, during an ambush by militants from the Islamic State-backed faction of Boko Haram in Borno.

The soldiers were on patrol to clear some Boko Haram elements in Monguno following credible intelligence when they were ambushed by the group.

According to a Major in the Army, the terrorists deployed armed drones on the army convoy in the town around 2 a.m. on Monday.

The drones used by the insurgents are similar to those deployed in countries like Israel and Ukraine, he said.

"The 242 Battalion Commander and soldiers were ambushed around 2 a.m. this morning by terrorists in Monguno Sector 3. The Commander was with some soldiers, and we don’t know the number of casualties yet,” the source said.

"They were going for reinforcement; it was drones that they used on them. The terrorists sent bombs with drones; those things shelled them. It’s very unfortunate.

"I could remember the Army explaining last year how these terrorists have been deploying weaponised drones, similar to those used in Israel and Ukraine. These drones are hard to detect with conventional radar."

In 2025, Ahmed Jaha, a member of the House of Representatives representing Borno, alleged that Boko Haram insurgents were using drones to attack residents in Borno State.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) lawmaker representing Damboa/Gwoza/Chibok federal constituency said the weapons used by the terrorists were more sophisticated than those of the Nigerian military.

Earlier, sources told SaharaReporters that Colonel Mohammed was killed by an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) following an ambush by the terrorists.

According to sources who spoke to SaharaReporters earlier, the insurgents launched the attack on Sunday night, targeting a Forward Operating Base (FOB) under the 242 Battalion in Mungunu, which falls under Sector 3 of the military’s counter-insurgency operations.

“One of our senior commanders, Colonel I.A. Muhammad, was killed last night when Boko Haram attacked Monguno. They also killed some soldiers during the attack,” a soldier on the front lines said.

Monguno is a strategic military hub hosting a large camp with multiple sub-units, including battalions led by Colonels and Lieutenant Colonels, under the supervision of a sector commander, a General Officer Commanding.

Sources explained that during the attack, insurgents focused their assault on a smaller but critical military position, the FOB, prompting an urgent call for reinforcement.

“The Colonel got information that troops at the FOB were under heavy attack. As a committed commander, he mobilised to lead reinforcement to the location,” another source said.

According to them, the tragedy struck before he could reach the embattled troops.

They narrated that while advancing towards the frontline, the Colonel’s convoy drove into a deadly ambush laid by the insurgents, who had planted a remotely detonated explosive device along the route.

“He did not die inside the camp. He was on his way to support his men when Boko Haram fighters ambushed them with a controlled landmine. It was not the type you step on; it was detonated remotely at the exact moment his vehicle approached,” the source added.

The explosion reportedly killed the Colonel instantly, alongside a yet-to-be-confirmed number of soldiers accompanying him.

Nigeria has been battling the insurgents in the North East region for over two decades now.

To play devil's advocate, that was Buhari's administration not Tinubu. I always felt that was senseless. This doesn't mean I am a tinubu guy, he has f'ed up badly with security.

What should we expect when corruption is at the root of the failure. Why not ask Netanyahu to show the recipe for dealing with terrorists? Why not give Netanyahu a little opportunity and terrorists will flee without delay?

Netanyahu is the only leader who knows they dealing with terrorists requires an eye for two eyes.

The Ukraine war has been raging fo around 4 years, everyone has observed that conflict and taken notes....except our military planners and intelligence agencies.

We've people completely unable to adapt and dominate, who keep sending ill-trained, poorly-equipped cannon fodder to die like lemmings, despite having access to US and resident ISR assets, and a number of captured fighters who can provide useful intelligence.

I just a video on Facebook (Facebook!) about a captured young fighter on a logistics run, recorded on video talking about planned attacks and vehicles and logistics.... instead of conducting this intelligence-gathering in secret and prepare to ambush or preemptively attack the insurgents.

The corruption they spent years in, pilfering everything in the budget from weapons procurement and staff allowances to pensions, is now coming to bite them with the same officer class now dying like flies in the hands of scrawny 15 year olds.

One other thing: I've always said the service chiefs don't really work together. Everyone is king of their domain, as per Oga, and won't submit to unified command structures even at the field tactical level.

In the US military, field assault teams have a Joint Terminal Attack Controller (JTAC) from the airforce embedded in army units to work with the field commander and direct air support.

Imagine an airforce officer taking command from an army commander in Nigeria: won't happen, Oga Airforce won't allow it!

That's such a foolish thing from the mouth of a baby or someone without knowledge. Half of what we are going through was because of how OBj ruled Nigeria. It is because OBJ was not decisive and politically played along with the Hausa/Fulani politicians that we have Sharia was introduced into Nigeria. He had the chance to quell this trouble in the head when they started this Islamization program, but he didn't do anything because of political power. He was chasing a third term/life presidency.

See how much he disbursed for the rehabilitation of lagos-ibadan expressway. Nothing was done but money was disbursed. See the $16 billion wasted on electrification, with nothing to show for it. He balkanized the Nigerian university system together with Atiku and both of them later established universities immediately after leaving office.

The common road to Ota where he resides was never repaired under his watch. People had terrible accident on that corridor with much fatality. They begged him, they sent delegates to him but he didnt do it just because it was not his party ruling Ogun State.

Besides the banking consolidation, the GSM introduction, the establishment of icpc and efcc, the paris club debt forgiveness (mind you it was fraudulent), and the establishment of NDDC, there is nothing great about OBJ's govt. We had good oil windfall then thats why we could afford the fraudilent subsidy then until they finished all the money Nigeria had. To you, it appeared that he did well but he didnt lay the foundation for which infrastructural expansion for industrial economy could thrive.

Becareful what you want. Maybe he should return to govern your family.
