Electrical Conductivity (EC) for Catfish Farming 🐟⚡

EC basically measures how much dissolved salts/minerals are in your pond water. More salts = higher conductivity. For catfish, it’s a key water quality parameter because it affects growth, stress, and survival.



1. Ideal EC Range for Catfish
200 - 1000 µS/cm is the sweet spot for most farmed catfish like Clarias gariepinus - African catfish, and Ictalurus punctatus- Channel catfish.

Breakdown:
- <200 µS/cm: Too low/mineral-poor. Fish can struggle with osmoregulation + weak bone development. Common in rainwater/RO water.

- 200-800 µS/cm: Optimal. Good mineral content for growth, gill function, and immunity.

- 800-1000 µS/cm: Still okay, but watch closely. Some stress starts here.

- >1500 µS/cm: Too high. Causes stress, reduced feeding, gill damage. Risky long-term.



2. Why EC Matters in Catfish Ponds

1. Osmoregulation: Catfish need minerals like Ca, Mg, K, Na in water to balance salts in their body. EC tells you if enough is there.

2. Feed conversion: Low minerals = poor growth even with good feed

3. pH/Alkalinity link: Low EC often means low alkalinity → pH swings that stress fish.

4. Toxicity buffer: Proper EC reduces ammonia/nitrite toxicity effects.



3. How to Manage EC in Your Ponds

Problem Cause
EC too low: Rainwater, borehole with few minerals, frequent water change

Fix
Add agricultural lime CaCO3, dolomite CaMgCO3, or pond salt. 50-100kg/ha lime raises both EC + alkalinity.


EC too high:

Problem Cause.
Evaporation, fertilizer runoff, overfeeding.

Fix.
Dilute with fresh water, increase water exchange, reduce inputs.

Pro tip: EC and Total Dissolved Solids TDS are linked. Roughly: TDS ppm = EC µS/cm × 0.64

Rule of thumb for catfish farms: If your borehole/well water EC is 300-600 µS/cm, you’re in a good spot. If it’s <150, plan to add lime at pond prep.
