My sister and I aren’t especially close, but we’ve always had a good relationship. So when she got engaged, I naturally assumed my husband and I would handle her wedding cake and makeup. It’s our business, and we’re good at what we do. We own a successful cake and makeup business, and over the years we’ve done weddings for friends, relatives, and complete strangers. Imagine my surprise when she hired someone else. Not even an established vendor. Just a friend of a friend’s recommendation. I was hurt, but I said nothing. My husband told me to let it go and just support her. A few weeks later, one of my closest friends got engaged. When her wedding date was fixed, she immediately asked me to handle both her cake and makeup. Because we’d be working all weekend, and I would also be spending most of the day with the bride on her wedding morning. I asked my sister if she could watch my kids from Friday to Sunday. She refused. She said she wasn’t a nanny and was busy preparing for her own wedding—even though it was still two weeks away. Then she added that my children were “too much work.” That one hurt. In the end, my husband and I had to drive several hours out of our way to his sister’s house instead. My friend’s wedding was a huge success. The cake and makeup got so many compliments. People couldn’t stop talking about either of them. Then the stories about my sister’s vendors started reaching me. The baker she hired was apparently difficult to reach. People complained that her cakes looked better online than they did in real life. The makeup artist wasn’t doing much better. There were constant disagreements over pricing, appointments, and extra charges. I stayed out of it. After all, she had made her choice. Then, three days before her wedding, my sister called. She wanted me to bake her cake and do her makeup. I agreed. Then I told her she’d have to pay the standard fee, plus the express booking fee we charge every client who comes to us at the last minute. Now she’s crying, saying I’m wicked and I want to ruin her wedding out of envy and spite. My parents are calling family meetings. Everyone wants to know how I could possibly charge my own sister. My husband thinks we should just do it and keep the peace. But I can’t help remembering that she didn’t trust me with the job when she had months to plan, and she couldn’t help me when I needed her. Now that her plans have fallen apart, she’s suddenly coming to me last minute to save the day. Am I wrong for expecting to be paid? The End Ajebo Writer © Kingdavid Chinaeke Ofunne |

tonystark007:Its an opportunity to showcase your work and get more clients. I usually say when a wahala seems unavoidable, its best to thread carefully, accept your loss with prayer. In a nutshell do it for the family and dont cheat! |

tunnyl:Abo Ogun dey killl family? Na family go carry her bills and responsibilities? Respect should run both ways. Boundaries should be respected and principles should be upheld. If she can accommodate her request, it should be EX-GRATIA out of her own goodwill and NOT BECAUSE OF FAMILY. You cannot gaslight or blackmail me for your own ERRORS OF OMISSION AND POOR JUDGEMENT. |

Nigeria ladies and wedding matter heemm, the white that introduced it don't invest time, effort and finance like Nigerians. Well if your sister can pay for the materials that is fine, I don't need to charge extral fee. |

She should just do it... To keep the peace as her husband said People can be biased and emotional They would tag you the bad person without taking time to know who was actually first at fault. I don't think it's worth you losing your peace over. Do it to maintain peace and your good name. Then immediately after the wedding have nothing to do with this so called sister of yours. Henceforth relate with her as you would a stranger. let her conscience judge her... |
