Let’s talk about something that happens to a lot of us, National Identification Number (NIN). Imagine Mama Ekene is finally ready to expand her catering business over in the Obizi communities, she goes to the bank, smiling, ready to apply for a small business loan to buy that big commercial oven she’s been dreaming about.

The bank official asks for her National Identification Number (NIN) slip. She hands it over confidently, but a minute later, the guy frowns. “Ma, your bank account says Ekene Grace Amadi, but your NIN reads Amadi Grace Ekene. Plus, the birth year here says 1978, but your BVN says 1975.”

Just like that, everything grinds to a halt.

If you are dealing with this kind of mess right now, don’t panic. Whether it’s a misspelled surname, an inverted middle name, or a completely wrong date of birth, these mistakes are incredibly common. But because your NIN links everything from your phone line and BVN to your international passport, you really can’t afford to leave it broken.

How to Use the NIMC Self-Service Portal With Your Smartphone Without Visiting NIMC Office
NIMC completely changed the game with their self-service portal https://selfservicemodification.nimc.gov.ng You don’t need to go queue up at any local government secretariat anymore; you can actually do everything right from your phone or laptop.

But a quick word of warning: the online system is highly automated. If you rush through it and make a typo, or upload a blurry document, the system will reject your application, swallow your money, and make you pay all over again.

To make sure that doesn’t happen to you, here is exactly how to navigate the portal step-by-step.
