How She Built a Millio^naire Fish Farm and Feed Milling Company In Nigeria. In this video we visited a catfish farm and a feed mill in port harcourt owned by a Nigerian lady popularly called housewifey, she owns arguably the biggest juvenile catfish farm in rivers state. We had an opportunity to speak with her to understand more about this her farm and also her feed mill, we spoke on how she was able to start and then scale to where she is now.

She also spoke about why Nigerians in the diaspora should consider investing in Nigeria.

Ignore the nonsense they are saying in that video.
You need 66 bags of feed to raise 1000 fish to table size. With an approximate cost of 22k today, that's around 1.5 million naira. Add up costs of renting the pond, water, drugs and other possible overheads, you can have a total cost of 1.8m for 1000 fish to table size.
If you are lucky to 800kg of fish in the end and buyers who are willing to buy a kilo for 3000 naira, that's 2.4m. Minus 1.8m and you have a 600k profit after 5 months.

The key is to have more than 1 pond and if your capital permits, you can stock in multiples of 1000. That's where you see good money.

But don't forget, it is 66 bags per 1000 fish. I've been there and done all that. I've raised 10,000 fish to table size before. So I know a thing or two.

Easier said than done, I can't forget my experience back then in 2020. Fish is not a reliable venture and you won't know this until when they bring scale to harvest your fish, poultry is even better.

First you have to separate CAPEX from OPEX.

CAPEX is capital expenditure.

OPEX is operating expenditure.

CAPEX is things like cost of land , ponds , borehole, pumping machine. This are huge funds that you won’t recoup in a cycle. Yet they are part of your expense.

Then OPEX is things like fingerlings or juveniles, fish feed, cost of changing water etc.

Whilst Op’s heart is in the right place, his calculations are false.

Asher’s Tarpaulin ponds of 500 fish each cost 250k each for full installation. So that’s 500k for 2 mobile ponds that can take 1000 fish already.

Juveniles of 70n : 70k

Feed at 2400 per Kg for 1000 fish is already 2.4m for 1000kg. We have not even spoken of a realistic FcR (feed conversion ratio)

Then cost of labour and water change etc

But what do I know ?

I’ve only being a full time fish farmer for 13 years now.

I have always believed that rearing poultry or fishery should never be for commercial purposes. Every single person should have something like it in their backyard and a little garden. If you then have extra, you can sell.

When you start to commercialize these things is when people go crazy.

So how can they reduce import while removing import duty? ?
Cost of those fish is very low

This reduces importation of fish meal used for fish feed making fish feed cheaper

Once fish feed is cheap cat fish and tilapia become so cheap people buy more catfish and tilapia over Titus and Kote fish even croaker

Once import on sardine fish is zero it makes more sense to produce canned sardines here than import since cost of production per can falls below 500 naira

Like I always say importation has never been the enemy

13 years is a long time for you in the aquaculture business. The cost breakdown here looks lucid enough for anyone who's serious of getting into that business niche. Availability of clean water, the lower the cost of fish feeds and the location of the business are some of the variables that enable breakeven and profitability to occur in multiple cycles.

Its at a calculation of 1000kg not 1000 bags. And I’ve not even applied a realistic FCR of 1.3 to the calculations

based on this analysis, how much profit do you make per 1000 fish. Your running cost alone is roughly about 3m if not plus.

The idea is what you can’t producer cheaper and is something that won’t threaten national security then import

Focus your energy ,policy and international diplomacy into something you can produce cheaper than most country

Stock fish we can never produce stock fish so why is there import duty on it ? We should be looking at what to export to Norway to balance the trade

Agreed. Unfortunately, government is a problem in Nigeria. They use tariffs for revenue generation instead of strategic economic building. It's a government of stomach infrastructure.

His estimate is reliable, you can only spend lesser amount , if you formulate your own feeds or embrace other unknown local feeds

He has equally stipulated that with personal formulation of feed you incure lesser cost.

Fish only reduce eating during cold weather. And if they aren't eating during normal weather, that means you need to change water or treat them for possible infection. I assure you, fish eat and eat so long as you keep feeding them and they are healthy.
