A Swollen Left Side In Cattle May Be Bloat—why Farmers Should Act Early by TelevetNigeria(op): 10:25pm On Aug 13
A cow with a rapidly enlarging left abdomen should never be treated as a minor feeding issue. Bloat happens when gas builds up in the rumen and cannot escape normally. It may follow a sudden change to lush pasture or other highly fermentable feed, but the exact cause needs proper assessment.
Watch for restlessness, repeated looking or kicking at the belly, excessive salivation, difficult breathing, or the animal repeatedly getting up and lying down. As pressure increases, breathing and circulation can be affected. This is why severe bloat can become life-threatening quickly.
Move the animal away from the suspected feed, keep it calm and contact a veterinary professional immediately. Do not puncture the abdomen or pour mixtures down the animal’s throat unless a qualified professional specifically directs you; an incorrect procedure can cause choking, injury or infection.
What feeding change usually happens before you notice bloat on your farm?
