Detailed Prospects of hay making in Nigeria

Detailed Prospects of hay making in Nigeria

Price of hay - 90 to 120 dollars per tonne

Arable land in Nigeria- Around 70 million hectares
Land Under cultivation for seasonal and permanent crops- 43 million hectares

Land Free for hay making- Over 25 million hectares

There are some other lands that can be irrigated too.

Possible Production per hectare in Southern Nigeria- 8 to 22 tonnes per hectare per annum

Possible Production in Northern Nigeria- 3 to 10 tonnes per hectare per annum

Possible production per annum on average- 12 tonnes per hectare

Total possible production for 25 million hectares excluding irrigated lands- 300 million tonnes per annum

Sales value- 36 billion dollars per annum before expenses

If everything is turned into dairy products in cattle ranches, the value of the beef, milk and etc will be around 80 billion dollars per annum before expenses and it would feed around 80 million heads at around 4 tonne average per head per annum which is like 35 percent of the stock owned by Brazil. Nigeria can not consume that much I believe and I think the country can just plan on half of that capacity.

Conclusion

The country has all it needs to solve the recurrent farmer - herder clashes

Recommendation

The state governors ought to mandate all traditional rulers that receive salaries from them to go into hay production within their domain and submit progress reports monthly to the LG commissions that pay them. It is their money but they are not likely to take it without being pushed.

With 30 million heads of cattle, Nigeria will have more cattle per Capita than Britain but not as much as the leaders like Brazil and Ethiopia

To be at par with the US on a per Capita basis Nigeria needs to have over 50 million heads but the US have the capacity to do as much as Brazil is doing while Nigeria does not. Brazil is doing over 220 million while the US is doing 86 million
