Why Are My Broilers Pooping Blood ? by justified007(op): 12:22pm On Sep 02
Good afternoon house ,

I bought some 4 weeks old broilers yesterday and I noticed some of them are pooping blood already.

Can someone recommend what I can give them before things get out of hand

If you mean blood in chicken droppings/faeces, the most common cause is coccidiosis, a parasitic intestinal disease that is especially common in young chickens.

Other possible causes include:

Coccidiosis — often causes bloody or reddish-brown droppings, weakness, ruffled feathers, and reduced feeding.

Intestinal worms — some parasites can damage the intestinal lining and cause blood.

Bacterial infections — certain intestinal infections can produce bloody diarrhea.

Injury or irritation of the intestine/cloaca.

Severe intestinal inflammation from other diseases or toxins.

What to do

If several chickens are producing bloody droppings, or they are weak, losing weight, not eating, or dying, treat it as urgent. Separate visibly sick birds and contact a poultry veterinarian or experienced poultry health professional for diagnosis. Coccidiosis can become fatal quickly if untreated.

If you tell me the chickens' age, how many are affected, what the droppings look like (bright red, dark brown, watery, etc.), and whether they're showing other symptoms, I can help you narrow down the likely cause.

Contact a poultry veterinarian today if possible and have a fresh dropping sample examined.
Separate obviously weak chicks if practical.
Keep the litter dry and remove wet/soiled bedding, because coccidia multiply readily in contaminated litter.
Ensure they have constant access to clean drinking water.
Since you aren't currently giving an anticoccidial, ask your vet/agricultural adviser about an appropriate anticoccidial treatment and the correct dose for your specific product. Don't guess the dose because concentrations differ between products.
Don't give antibiotics randomly; they won't treat coccidia itself

Good afternoon. If by “pulling blood” you mean passing bloody droppings, coccidiosis should be strongly suspected, especially in four-week-old broilers.

As a veterinary doctor, I recommend seeking professional help promptly for proper diagnosis and treatment with an appropriate anticoccidial medication. Meanwhile, remove wet litter, keep the pen dry, clean the drinkers and provide fresh water. Avoid using antibiotics indiscriminately because coccidiosis is caused by a parasite, not bacteria.

You can also call TeleVet 08111112131 or 09133659191 to speak with a veterinary doctor and receive professional guidance on the appropriate next steps.
