Nigeria’s decision to restrict the export of raw shea nuts is intended to encourage more processing and value addition within the country.

I think the direction is interesting.

The goal is simple: keep more shea nuts in Nigeria, process them locally, create more value, and export finished products instead of raw materials.

But there is another part of the shea industry we should pay attention to — community-level producers.

Through Afrik Fair’s work with Yekosa Farms in Niger State, we have seen women already processing shea nuts into handcrafted shea butter at the community level.

They may not operate large factories, but they are already creating value.

If Nigeria wants to build a stronger shea industry, these producers also need access to:

Affordable working capital
Appropriate processing equipment
Quality testing and certification
Better storage and aggregation
Stronger markets for their finished shea butter

Nigeria needs big factories. But big factories should not replace the community-level producers who form the foundation of Nigeria’s shea story.

Industrial processing and community-based processing can grow alongside each other.

The question is: How do we make sure the benefits of Nigeria’s shea value addition reach both the factories and the communities where the industry begins?
