Python Programming Class: Before You Learn Python, Know What You Want To Build by NexaTech(op): 12:18pm On Oct 05
There is something funny about how people choose programming languages.

Someone asks:

“Which programming language should I learn?”

Someone replies:

“Python.”

Then the next question becomes:

“Where can I get Python programming classes?”

And before long, the person is watching videos about variables without really knowing why they want to program in the first place.

I think we can do better than that.

Python is a tool, not the destination.

Suppose you tell me:

“I want to automate some boring work.”

Python makes sense.

You say:

“I want to get into data analysis.”

Python makes sense.

You say:

“I'm interested in AI and machine learning.”

Python makes sense.

You say:

“I want to build backend applications.”

Python can make sense.

That is one of the reasons Python remains such a useful language for beginners. It can take you into several areas of technology instead of locking you into one particular path.

Nigeria's current digital-skills programs reflect this broader direction. NITDA's technical-skills focus includes software development, data science, and AI/machine learning, among other areas. Some institutions, including TEKHUB NG (https://tekhub.ng/), also reflect this broader direction.

But there is a mistake I see people making.

They learn Python syntax without learning how to think like a programmer.

Knowing if and for when isn't the real skill.

You can memorize:

if age >= 18:
print("Adult"wink

You can memorize loops.

You can memorize functions.

You can memorize lists and dictionaries.

But then somebody gives you a simple problem and says,

“Build a program that keeps track of a shop's daily sales and tells the owner which day had the highest sales.”

Suddenly, memorising syntax isn't enough.

You have to think.

What information do I need?

How should I store it?

What should happen if there is no data?

How do I compare the values?

How do I display the result?

That thinking is programming.

The language is simply how you communicate the solution to the computer.

And AI has made this even more obvious.

Today, you can ask an AI tool to generate a Python script in seconds.

That's convenient.

But what happens when the code doesn't work?

What happens when it gives you the wrong result?

What happens when you need to change one part of the program?

What happens when the code becomes 500 lines long and you don't understand what half of it is doing?

That's when having actual programming knowledge becomes important.

Recent Stack Overflow research shows just how deeply AI tools are entering developers' workflows: AI-tool usage among survey respondents rose from 62% in 2024 to 79% in 2025.

So I wouldn't tell a beginner:

“Don't use AI to learn Python.”

I'd say:

“Use AI, but don't let it do all your thinking.”

If you're learning Python in Awka

For someone searching for a Python programming class in Awka, I'd look beyond the number of lessons on the timetable.

Ask what you'll actually build.

A good learning experience should gradually take you from:

syntax → small exercises → projects → debugging → real applications.

At TEKHUB NG in Awka, Python can fit naturally into a broader practical technology-learning journey alongside software development and other digital skills.

You can explore the academy here:

Start smaller than you think.

Don't begin by saying:

“I'm going to become a Python expert.”

That's too big.

Say:

“I'm going to build a program that solves one small problem.”

A calculator.

A student-grade tracker.

A simple expense tracker.

A file organizer.

A quiz application.

Then make it better.

Then build something slightly harder.

Eventually, you look back and realize something important:

You didn't just learn Python. You learned how to solve problems with code.

And that is worth much more.

For those learning around Awka, Enugu, Aba, Owerri, and the rest of the Southeast:

What was the first thing you built with Python—or what would you like to build first?
