Ojukwu was a very smart man. After the coup of july 1966, he called brigadier ogundipe to continue to resist the rebel. The hausa soldiers told ogundipe they wouldn't take orders from him and he had to call a lieutenant abubakar who got go ahead from murtala before relaying ogundipes wish to the soldiers who were all northerners.
Interestingly. Ojukwu left enugu and was calling ogundipe to keep fighting from onitsha. He refused to get back to his post at enugu until col ogunewe his deputy negotiated on ojukwu's behalf to evacuate all the northern soldiers from enugu.

Timehin: Why do some people claimed AWO was against the igbos?

The letter confirmed its the northerners that are anti-igbo and events since then have shown who are their enemies.

Shaaatta, first we know Northerners as anti-Igbos angry
Secondly we also know Yorubas as IGBO back stabbers cool
thirdly is this a letter or a REPORT, who will write 20 pages( if its hand written) of letter in prison undecided

Did that Igbo man release him? It took a middle-belter called Gowon to release him. For eff sake, stop lying. Since when the Gowon become a Hausa. Even his closest friend Nnamdi join a Hausa to imprison him and cause chaos in the Western region after splitting it to reduce her political dominance but God does not sleep.

You guys are not being sincere and that's your problem.

Zik was never Awolowo's closest friend neither did he throw him in jail. You asked did the Igbo man release him but you fail to ask did yourself why Ironsi who was only in power fro about 3 months when the letter was written should have release someone accused of reason just because he wrote a letter. You should also ask yourself if the other's that were imprisoned wrote a letter as well. Lets not mention the middle belter gowon who released him only out of fear of a war against the Easterners and needed more manpower from a region outside of his own.

Lets stick to the write up and stop pointing fingers.

@ da infamous,
You are very correct. According to the article, the evacuated northern soldiers on their way to lagos through kaduna even killed 3 igbo officers who boarded the train at kaduna and beheaded them. The attack was led by lieutenant shehu yaradua. Benjamin adekunle was reportedly stabbed by yaradua with a boyanet for allowing the easterners to board the train and protesting against attacking them.
If nothing else, the article, corroborated by the actors and even the opposing sides opened my eyes to the fact that the northerners are very united and no matter how close you get to them, they won't hesitate to kill you if you are not from the north. Ironsi was betrayed by the northern soldiers he most trusted, major danjuma only had to walk up to the commander of the northern guard to explain his mission before the northerners who were amongst the guard overpowered the southerners and instead turn into Ironsi's captor. A col okoro at kaduna was set up by his trusted second in command who he had exacted promise of loyalty from despite advice from madiebo to evacuate the city.

What a bunch of lun.atics we have on NL. It is exactly for this reason hardened criminals have takeover our House of Assembly, presidency gone to the dogs and the Nigerian state in utter chaos.

Nigerians are unable to rise above tribal sentiments and use the brain that God has given them to improve on their living space like other people. Its a shame. If this is a curse, it is bad curse that need exorcism. In the mean time your leaders may continue to plunder your resources while you idolise and shout yourself hoarse over your kinsmen.

...I can imagine a hausa man saying similar stories about betrayals when talking about how Kaduna Nzeogwu and his largely Igbo cohorts cheerfully murdered Tafawa Balewa. Maimalari, Largema, Pam, Okotie-Eboh, Ademulegun...all shot and killed by people they trusted.

Hell, here's an account by Ademulegun's daughter of how Nzeogwu killed her pregnant mum, despite him being a regular visitor to their house to eat hot pounded yam.

http://nm.onlinenigeria.com/templates/?a=7109

Major Nzeogwu was a welcome guest in my parents’ home. He will always come to our house for steaming hot meal of pounded yam. Being Ondo State indigenes, pounded yam was a regular meal in my mother’s kitchen. On the day of the coup, Nzeogwu came calling with some other soldiers in the wee hours of the day. I think they were about six soldiers. As an impressionable young girl of six, that was quite a number. There were guns everywhere. I remember vividly that I was down with chicken pox, so I had the opportunity of sleeping in my parents’ room. My immediate younger brother was also sleeping soundly in a cot in the same room. But when Nzeogwu came in, there was little talking. I even called him uncle, but he was the one that shot my mother in the chest. She didn’t die immediately, but she was rolling on the floor, gasping and bleeding.

So when you talk about 'betrayal' and try to pin it on one tribe, remember that those in glass houses should NEVER throw stones...and that there are devils amongst every one of us.

So ppl are even crying beside their computers.

Thank you Awolowo for the free education sha. A lot of Yorubas/Igbos have eaten from that.

ebamma: if pa awolowo had known that this is wat nigeria will turn to, he could have supported ojukwu's biafra cause.

Do you know the implication of that? ; you are indirectly saying that with all his education, he was still shortsighted and lacked vision... Not trying to take side here but i think ojukwu was smarter to have known what would become of this country... hence the move for sessation

Many Nigerians still naively believed that the cause of the Nigerian civil war was the "massacre" of some people in the North or wherever.

Hint: Oil was discovered in 1956 in Nigeria.

So many ignorant people on NL; even if they are ignorant, using logic can also help in analysing a scenario.

Awo was charged with Treasonable felony in November 1962 and sentenced in September 1963

In March 1966, Awo wrote to Ironsi from prison asking to be released but was ignored by Ironsi. Between January 1966 and July 1966, Ironsi was Head of State and Ojukwu was Governor of the Eastern region.

Gowon was sworn-in in the evening of July 30 1966 but made his announcement as Head of state of August 1st.

Obafemi Awolowo was released from prison on the 8th of August 1966; exactly 1 week after Gowon's ascension. Awo was driven to Ikenne in Murtala Mohamed's car.

On the 8th of August 1966, who was paying the wages of the Warden at the Federal Prison in Calabar? Was it not Gowon? Who was also paying Ojukwu's salary as the Governor of the Eastern region?

Ojukwu wants us to believe that while he was in power with another Igbo as Head of State for 6 months, he could not release Awo from prison but could release Awo from prison exactly one week after a new government, one which he did not recognise, headed by Gowon was formed.

Ojukwu could not have released Awo from prison because he didn't have the powers to do so. He was only being an opportunist when he made that claim.

The Yoruba soldiers released by Ojukwu were released after the war started in 1967 and all stayed in Biafra to fight on the Biafran side.
