Early this Tuesday Morning, a five-story building collapsed at the Chisco Bus Stop, just opposite the Oando Office at Lekki Phase One in Lagos.

Spokesperson of the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, Ibrahim Farinloye, confirmed that four people have so far been confirmed dead while five have been rescued from the rubble.

Nancy Davis Reagan, the wife of the late President Ronald Reagan, died today at her home in Los Angeles at the age of 94.

The late First Lady was known for her loyalty to her husband and how overprotective she became of him after an assassination attempt on his life 1981.

During her White House years, she fought for a major drug prevention crusade aimed at children and young adults. She toured the U.S. and other nations as part of her “Just Say No” campaign, traveling almost 250,000 miles.

She was popularly called “Queen Nancy” by critics because of the tough choices she made, and because of the rich lifestyle she brought to the White House during the time of recession.

Her spokesman, Joanne Drake said in a statement:

Mrs. Reagan died of congestive heart failure. She will be buried at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, California, next to her husband, Ronald Wilson Reagan, who died on June 5, 2004.

Reagan was an actress when she met Ronald Reagan in the early 1950s, then an actor and president of the Screen Actors Guild, according to a White House bio.

Patience Paul Adaji, the teenager alleged to have been abducted in Sokoto state and converted to Islam, is reported to have been rescued. Report of her abduction came out soon after Ese Orurushe was released after being captured for eight months by one Yunusa aka Yellow.

According to The Cable, The girl’s father, Paul Adaji, who’s from Ochobo in Ohimini Local Government Area of Benue State, revealed that his daughter has been missing since August 12, 2015 after realizing that a similar case in that of Ese had occurred and was rescued. It motivated him to also cry out too.

Adaji also stated that Patience was once seen at the Sultan of Sokoto’s palace, but added that she wasn’t found there when they attempted to take her back.

Governor Aminu Tambuwal had on Thursday, mandated the state’s human rights commission and other agencies to urgently look into the alleged abduction.

According to The Cable, Patience, who was 14 at the time of her abduction, was found on Friday night at the house of one Malam Ibrahim, who calls himself Sarkin Baki (“king of strangers”).

A source told The Cable:

The Sokoto State Human Rights Commission, along with the team set up by the police, questioned suspects and detained three persons in connection with the issue.

Patience was said to have been taken to an Imam in Runjin Sambo area of Sokoto by the Sharia Police, who claimed that she wanted to convert to Islam. The Imam then questioned her on her age and realizing she was just 14 years, sought the counsel of the Sultanate Council on the matter who ordered them to return her back to her parents.

Instead the Sharia police took her and handed over to the Sarkin Baki, who claims he’s been housing her since September 2015 and even sent her to an Islamic and Government school to study.

When asked why she didn’t run back home, Patience claimed she was afraid of returning home because of possible reprisal from her siblings.

Stephanie Okekere took to her blog to write her own opinion on The kidnapped girl Ese Orurushe who was forced to convert to Islam and forced into marriage.

She writes:

I’ve been keenly following Ese Oruru‘s story on the news for some time now and the turn of events is really shocking, I must say!

Different versions of her story keep creeping up in the news. It’s hard to know what to believe anymore.

What I find most appalling is some people are blaming her for her predicament. Blaming a 14 year-old girl! For what! She is still a child!!

It’s even more sad that there are still lots of girls taken from their parents care across the country and sexually abused everyday!

Kudos to PUNCH for bringing Ese’s story to the fore. There are many more Ese’s out there who have been turned to sex slaves as young girls.

If we must learn anything from Ese’s story, it is that we must put more efforts into protecting the girl child.

Ese is just a child. The conditions under which she was abducted or left her parent’s home is not the issue. She is a minor who was abused.

Now she is bearing a child and her life has taken on a whole new path.

She needs counselling and our prayers. But most of all, we all have a collective responsibility to ensure this doesn’t repeat itself again.

My prayers go out to Ese and her family I pray they find the strength to recover from this shocking experience

I also pray for the young girls who were kidnapped from a secondary school in Lagos. May they be found safely and reunited with their families.

Governor Adams Oshiomhole says Senator Dino Melaye only displayed his hollowness by delving into a matter as private as his marriage to his heartthrob.

In a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr Peter Okhiria, the Governor said “Our attention has been drawn to the unprovoked verbal assault launched by one Senator Dino Melaye on the Governor of Edo State, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, while making a contribution on the floor of the Senate on the need to patronize made-in-Nigeria goods.

As a “nephew” of the Governor and members of the same party, we expected Senator Melaye to tender an unreserved public apology to the Comrade Governor, to no avail.

It is an open secret that Senator Melaye cannot maintain a decent matrimonial home hence he could descend to this pedestrian level of using the hallowed chambers to “cargorise” women as if they were pieces of items for purchase. Any responsible individual that is truly worth to be called a Senator, a position that convokes respect, decorum and decent public conduct, should know the limits of his verbal diarrhea.

The liberty of free speech guaranteed in the hallowed chambers does not impose lunacy on anyone to disparage other Nigerians, let alone pry into their matrimony in a very derisive manner. We had intended to ignore this uncomplimentary comment as one of the several empty displays of the Senator, but the fact that it tends to reduce women to pieces of tissue calls for this response.

As we probed into Dino Melaye’s humanity, we were reminded that he is a man known for his vainglorious rodomontade and the childish display of his ostentatious lifestyle complements his love for foreign items. Many of such euro-centric mentality he has persistently displayed on social media, to underscore his materialistic eccentricity, hence his dialectical opposition to made-in-Nigeria goods. But an attempt at making women wear the garb of goods to be picked off the shelves was to take the issue to a ridiculous and irresponsible level.

By delving into the private affair and marriage of the Comrade Governor, Senator Melaye has exposed himself as a simpleton and a court jester whose words and tactlessness cannot be taken seriously by matured people.

We advise that Melaye should mend his ways with his ex-wife and concubines before coming to the village square to display his crass ignorance and emptiness to the Nigerian people.

If he has anything to offer, Dino Melaye should concentrate on making good laws for the people of Nigeria rather than descend to a ridiculous level, thus displaying to the whole world his unworthiness to sit in the hallowed chambers of the Nigerian Senate.

There is a usually predictable, almost robotic, pattern of reaction to any story in which an individual or a group from the north of Nigeria is a major character. This is the error of contemptuous generalisation, taking the action of a few individuals for a collective decision of the entire region. Or visiting the “sins” of the colonial north upon the millennial. This diseased lockstep of the mind is then applied to our social interactions, influencing both the outcomes of our political activities and even one’s sense of safety or social integration in any region other than ours.

The case of Ese Oruru, a girl of 13, 14 or 17, depending on the narrative one subscribes to, only opens a big playgroup for some of the most bigoted suspects to amuse us with their insularity. These analysts and emergency activists proudly exhibit how they were influenced by stereotypes and sincere ignorance to perceive and portray the north as a continent of barbarians. This is an easy inference from the barrage of insults and condescending commentaries that attribute the travail of the “southern girl” to the religion of Islam and people of the north.

The bottom line of her story, as popularised by the north-shaming narrative is, Ese was kidnapped in Bayelsa by an 18 year-old Yunusa Dahiru, also known as Yunusa Yellow, and taken to Kano where, against her will, she was forced to become a Muslim, married to the boy, and then sheltered in the palace of Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II of Kano Emirate. Thus, the catch lines, especially for those yet to forgive Sanusi Lamido Sanusi for his part in the fall of a “southern President” became: “Emir Sanusi Abducts Bayelsa Girl”, “Emir Sanusi Forces Bayelsa Girl into Islam”, “Emir Sanusi Justifies Kidnap of Bayelsa Girl”, and the stories came in various screaming headlines and sensationalised by both the mainstream media and blogs desperate for massive web traffic and mischief. A pathetically ingenious blog even carried that Ese was abducted by Yunusa to be made the Emir’s concubine, citing the former CBN Governor’s recent marriage to an 18 year-old and describing him as paedophile!

The embarrassed Emirate Council countered the sensationalised narrative, confirming its awareness of the story and the role it played. The Council was approached by the family of Yunusa and, in its disapproval of the mode of union between Yunusa and Ese, it wrote to the Kano State Shari’ah Commission and the Office of the Assistant Inspector General of police, Zone 1, to have the poor girl reunited with her family. This was the last the Emirate heard of the case until it became a viral advocacy that attributed to it a role it didn’t play.

“At the police office,” according to Yunusa’s 55-year-old father in a March 2 interview with the Premium Times, “And before Ese’s family, the girl cried that her life was in danger and that she rather died than go back with her family. In sympathy, the police said Aisha should be taken back to Kura.”

That account of Ese’s “father-in-law”, Malam Dahiru Bala, indicts the Police as culprits in this story, and also contradicted what she told newsmen at the Police Headquarters in Abuja: that she didn’t know how she got to Kano; that Yunusa wasn’t even her boyfriend, just a patron at her mother’s restaurant; that she didn’t remember consenting to elope with Yunusa; that she didn’t recognise her mother when the latter came to Kano; that she wasn’t married to Yunusa; that her conversion to Islam was not consensual; and that she regretted what happened and that, if she sees her alleged husband, she wouldn’t even know what to do, because “I’m confused… I don’t know what to do.” This is from her interview with The Sun of March 3, 2015. Ese’s post-freedom accounts are even more intriguing, as claims of her love affair with Yunusa is now even dubious. But what may frustrate the denial is her mother’s version of the story, that when she found out her little girl was missing, the first suspect was the 18-year-old Hausa boy. But what matters now that she’s regained her freedom is the legal perspectives of this unfortunate, as the dual legal systems operational in both the south and north have provisions for penalising the guilty party at the Court of Law.

While we await the outcome of that, it’s pertinent to challenge the mischievous labelling of the north and its people in the court of public opinion by a legion of bigoted southerners who wore the garb of activism not truly out of sympathy for the girl, but to amplify their bigotry. Some of them are the same hypocrites who dismissed the abduction of Chibok girls as a hoax and anti-Jonathan propaganda. If the welfare of the girl was indeed their concern, why are they silent about the growing baby factories across the southern half of the country? They can’t claim to have no knowledge of the existence of these dehumanising places. A few months ago, in Asaba, police detectives raided a place opposite the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria office to free 8 pregnant teenagers. On June 13, last year, Enugu State Police Command raided a baby factory in Etiti in Amankwo-Ngwo Udi Local Government Council to free pregnant girls as young as 17. And even in Ese’s place of origin, activities similar to such advocacy-worthy atrocity takes place. Not long ago, the State Coordinator of Child Protection Network, Ms. Mariam Kombo-Ezeh shared stories of child abuse in Bayelsa State including the death of a 7-year-old from HIV/AIDS acquired from a rape. She also recounted the story of a 4-year-old girl raped to death by a 40-year-old man, but how many of these self-styled activists know the 40-year-old monster or bother to track this case and ensure delivery of justice? Theirs is only to sensationalise that of a particular people, which they generalise to register their savagery.

If ignorance had not been applied in our clamouring for the freedom of Ese, whose case is of course heart breaking to all sane minds, the north and Islam wouldn’t have been made scapegoats of a teenager’s foolish adventure. A simple enquiry would’ve shown that Islam does not condone elopement, and it’s perhaps the same wisdom the Kano Emirate Council identified with, in admonishing the Police and Sharia Commission to “repatriate” her. The Muslims have their tradition for formalising union between a man and woman, referred to as “Katb el-Kitab” – marriage contract. In a famous Hadith, the Prophet of Islam said: “Any woman who gets married without the permission of her guardian, her marriage is invalid, her marriage is invalid, her marriage is invalid.” Note the repeated clause. What Yunusa did is a crime that has no place in Islam or the northern society. Activist-types barely disguising their pet bigotries insisting that it is, for purposes of their own devising, will not make it so. They will only make communication and mutual understanding more fraught. My God save us from us!

Brazilian police have raided the home of ex-President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva as part of a huge fraud inquiry into the state oil company Petrobras.

Mr Lula, who left office in 2011, have been brought in for questioning although he has denied allegations of corruption. The long-running inquiry, known as Operation Car Wash, is probing accusations of corruption and money laundering at Petrobras. 33 search warrants and 11 detention warrants are being carried out.

Some 200 federal police agents were deployed in the states of Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo and Bahia.

Mr Lula’s house in Sao Bernardo, near Sao Paulo, was raided early on Friday. The headquarters of the former president’s institute in Sao Paulo was also a target, as well as addresses linked to one of his sons, Fabio Luis. One of the lines of inquiry is that construction companies targeted by the operation could have paid for the development of Mr Lula’s ranch.

Dozens of executives and politicians have been arrested or are under investigation on suspicion of overcharging contracts with Petrobras and using part of the money to pay for bribes.
Mr Lula served two terms as president and was succeeded in office by his political protege, Dilma Rousseff.

The Department of State Service, DSS, had released the Former National Chairman of the All Progressive Grand Alliance, APGA, Chief Victor Umeh, who was arrested at his Aguluzigbo country home in Anambra State and taken to Abuja reportedly for questioning over his alleged sponsorship of the pro-Biafra group, the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

The party’s Deputy Secretary, Jerry Obasi, confirmed his release but however stated that the arrest was politically motivated by Mr. Umeh’s opponents in the forthcoming Anambra Central Senatorial re-run election.

While describing the arrest as “obnoxious and despicable”, Mr. Obasi expressed regret that the DSS had become a willing tool in the hands of politicians who use the service to intimidate political opponents.

We condemn in strongest terms the unlawful harassment and intimidation of Chief Sir Victor Umeh, our former National Chairman who was whisked away from his house at the earliest hour of yesterday in what seemed like a commando and gang arrangements by the DSS. It is quite unfortunate that Nigerians, especially political stalwarts of other political parties are now branded names using government agencies like the DSS to intimidate opponents with a view to either stopping them from running for elections or to clamp down on their chances politically especially those whose chances of winning elections are obvious just as in the circumstances which Chief Umeh was arrested. It is quite absurd and alarming that the DSS deliberately whisked Chief Umeh away in a rickety van thereby bringing his personality to odium.

The most disappointing of them all is the obvious fact that these black movies are being acted under the watchful eye of President Muhammadu Buhari. It is sad that security agencies under the present administration are willing tools in the hands of the highest bidder rather than concentrating on their constitutional duty of maintaining law and order.

Democracy should be civilized and not militarized unless in the circumstances where we are heading towards a police state and anarchy.

The news of a young teenage girl kidnapped by a guy and ferried to the North has been making trends in the papers and social media. One Ese was kidnapped by a man and forced into marriage. Her religion was forcefully converted to Muslim. The authorities weren’t able to do anything for a long while while Nigerians complain of how lawless Nigeria has turned to.. Ade Olawale, an author and a blogwriter, writes on an article on the tale of this young girl which proves how lawless Nigeria is.



A calamitous crime story unfolded recently before a bewildered country. But for the pain of a loving mother and her family, it would have looked more like one of those numerous Nollywood movies. Unfortunate this is real! The conveying and kidnapping of this young girl of 4 years from her home in Opobo in Bayelsa state to very far North, Kano state by a pedophile and pervert, seemingly for marriage and religious conversion, is a monstrous and atrocious crime which must be punished severely.

This Ese abduction saga reminds me of the level of impunity in our country Nigeria. It reminds me of the negligence and recklessness of our officials, in whom we put our trust and lives in their hands and care. It reminds me of the callousness that occurs in this country and of the oppression the weak and low-classed masses in Nigerians suffer, not able to speak and have a voice of their own. The facts of the case reveal the intolerable neglect in handling of the case by the police, the Bayelsa state governor whom should have been the one clamoring for her release, and other government officials.

The report had come like a funny rumor. One Yinusa, a commercial keke driver had on August 12, 2015 kidnapped one Ese Oruru from her mother’s shop and had ferried her all the way from Bayelsa to Kano state. This same Yinusa was one of Ese’s mother’s regular customer, a customer Ese’s mother must have prayed every day for, wished him good, prayed for his business to go well. How had he responded to all these well wishes? He had kidnapped the daughter of the woman when she was not around and had travelled with her to Kano state beyond her wish.

This case of minor abduction should have been responded with a swift respond of the officials who should have ransacked the whole of Kano state and fished out the captor of this young girl. The case shouldn’t have lasted this long; it should have been solved and concluded highest three days after the report had gotten to them. The accomplice and his colleagues should have been arrested immediately and by now the courts should have already sentenced them to years in prison. Instead what did we see, impunity in the highest and lowest levels.

Unfortunately, the district head in the Kano emirate and the Sharia Council had not only turned their eyes away to what the pedophile did, but also applauded him and commended what he did. They apparently made it difficult for the girl’s parents to retrieve her because according to them, she was now a Muslim and was one of them now.

I don’t see the difference between this case and the case of the Chibok girls that were kidnapped by the Boko Haram sect who were converted to Muslims and forced into marriage. Just like the Chibok girls, the security personnel failed to do their job and get Ese early. It makes me wonder, are all Muslims the same thing? Why force someone into your religion and force the person to get married to you?

All these suggest that Nigeria is a callous country, heading to nowhere but peril. Emir Sanusi, who one would have thought with him being an educated man and the Emir of Kano would make the release of the girl easier, however, has disappointed many of us. Given his antecedents—a former Central Bank of Nigeria governor and a respected Nigerian whose view on issues are highly respected for his role in disproving lawlessness—we were disappointed at the manner he allowed his royal office into this glaring perfidy. For one, he allowed his royal home to be brought into the mess of this case. Though he claimed he has ordered her release since last year and was surprised she was still around, Sanusi should have followed the case bumper-to-bumper since it was an unusual case. But no, he was nonchalant on it. It wasn’t his daughter; she was now a Muslim and of course why wouldn’t have loved that. But he forgot she was someone else’s daughter. Sanusi failed as a leader and is unacceptably a disgrace to educated royal monarchs. But what would one have expected from a man who himself marries young girls and approves of the marriage of his people to young girls.

The adverse effects are there. One, a chunk in Ese’s life has been lost. Though it’s been just eight months, Ese has lost a lot. It would take time getting use to her family. It would take consultations and psychological test before the real Ese can come back to herself. It would take a lot of test to confirm Ese has gotten no form of illness or STDs from her captor, who of course must have forcefully had canal knowledge of her. It would take a lot of consultations before Ese can forget all those periled days in the hand of her captors.

This is an offense that attracts imprisonment, according to the Criminal Code Act, The Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004. It states, “Any person who unlawfully takes an unmarried girl under the age of sixteen years out of the custody or protection of her mother and against the will of her father or mother is guilty of misdemeanor and is liable to imprisonment for two years.” But of course, that is just one charge apart from rape and forceful conversion of religion.

Ese’s case is not new in Nigeria. Many suffer different level of lawlessness in Nigeria. I recall a statement meant by a serving senator, Ahmed Sani, who allegedly married a 15-year-old Egyptian in 2010: “I don’t care about the issue of age since I’ve not violated any rule as far as Islam is concerned. I will not respect any law that contradicts it…” Are there now two laws in Nigeria?

President Buhari should call a probe into this matter. The captors and those guilty in this act should be arrested. The officials should be investigated to see if anyone helped Yinusa in his abduction or in concealing it, because of course, he must have someone high protecting him. The Emir of Kano should also be investigated to see if he helped in this crime and if found guilty stripped of his position and sent to jail. This would be a step toward fighting corruption, if at all Buhari is still in his agenda. If not, it would only prove Nigeria is a lawless city in turmoil and even Buhari cannot save this country from corruption.

The institutions of state dedicated to fighting corruption will be given independence and prosecutorial authority without political interference. We will stop corruption and make the ordinary people, the weak and the vulnerable our top priority.”

However with the recent increase in the dollar price over the last few weeks, Nigerians have been compelled to ask if Mr. President seriously knew what he was doing. To make matters worse, the opposition party, PDP accused Buhari of traveling abroad all the time while the country was in turmoil. Many lamenters had already declared Naira dead and all that was just remaining was the official obituary pictures of Naira.

Even though the Buhari’s administration had not been known for extravagant spending and wasting of the country’s reserve on irrelevant stuffs, he is still blamed, blamed for curse of a botched and bungled economy he inherited from the past economy.

Many of these critics has used this dollar price increase in the past few weeks as an opportunity to conceal their sob tale of not being able to soothe their frenzied appeal for foreign product, and the opposition party has exultantly made an occasion out of the horrendous status quo to thump at Buhari, whose recent anti-corruption policy has smacked and smashed on them hard.

“Why was Mr. President travelling even when our economy was in crises?” many asked. Many wondered if he was blind to the current situation of things in the country. Yet many thought it was due to his lack of economic intellect and naivety in handing the post of the president.

Suddenly, there were people clamoring for the devaluation of Naira. Let me quote a certain governor who made a hilarious statement:

“With the gap between the official rate of N199 and open market rate of over N400 to one dollar, Naira has already been devalued. Therefore, President Muhammadu Buhari must stop deceiving himself and short-changing Nigerians, especially States and Local Councils in the country with his Forex Policy.”

I call this hilarious because you would expect that before an intelligent governor opens his mouth and talks trash, he should have evaluated the consequences in the future. Devaluation has its negative effects which is what Nigeria doesn’t need now. Devaluation would cause inflation, increase in the cost of living and would reduce the standard of living. Yes, the so-called governor might survive in his temple but what of the poor masses.

Someone said Mr. President was the most imprudent president Nigeria has ever had. I wish to quote otherwise and instead say that Buhari is the most rational and logical president Nigeria has to date. He is bold and intrepid; even when many people called for the devaluation of the dollar (because, of course, they have something to gain from it), he maintained his stance. He has chosen to surround himself with the best advisers and honest scholars, at least to make due for the not-much education he has. That is a sign of a president that is willing to serve; he doesn’t let his disadvantage work for him.

Now many have been asking, “What does Buhari do all the time abroad?” You want to know? Well he is trying to clear up the mess the past administration made. When Minister of Information, Lai Mohammed said Buhari was trying to save Nigeria from the condition of being a pariah state, he meant it. No one was ready to invest in Nigeria before. Now they are; now they’ve seen a man who can stand out and say NO to corruption. Now, they feel safe investing knowing their investments is secured and fortified.

Now the results of Buhari’s travelling are coming into limelight. His travels are finally paying off. Dollar is gradually coming down because investment is gradually entering Nigeria. Buhari has also been able to communicate with other Oil Producing States and proffered the best way to tackle the problem of the low oil price in the foreign market. Saudi Arabia has accepted. Iran is to accept soon. Those corrupt people in Nigeria hiking the dollar price unnecessarily are finally realizing that Buhari is really mean on improving the economy of Nigeria. Now they are rushing to offload their dollar, least they suffer the highest blow. All are advantages of Mr. President’s foreign trips.

Information reaching us states that a girl from FUTO (names withheld for now) had earlier this afternoon detached her fellow girl’s nose while fighting.

According to one Evangelist Annointed Charles who shared this news on Facebook, the two girls had a little misunderstanding between themselves which led to a fight. One told the other to fetch some water but she objected and started using vulgar language on her colleague. An eye witness also stated that during the misunderstanding, the affected lady pulled out the hair of the other lady which led to more drama.

When the fight started, the affected girl’s nose was bitten off causing the right part to fall off. When other students noticed what had happened, they quickly looked for the fallen part but were unable to find it.

Her cheek was also bitten too.

After the drama, the victim was rushed to the school clinic but unfortunately she was rejected and was referred to the Federal Medical Centre Owerri for proper and effective treatment and surgery.

For bleeding to stop, the medical team at FMC had to cut some flesh from her laps. As at now, the matter is still under investigation to know the real cause of the fight.
