The Nigerian economy has displayed a healthy growth for some years now, as shown by its increasing industrial output, the growing number of businesses as well as consumer demand. In addition, due to Nigeria’s still limited industrial infrastructure, there is always a high demand for imports, especially of automobiles. This means that there are many opportunities in the international automobile market in Nigeria. Exporting cars to Nigeria is becoming increasingly common, and presents a growing opportunity for investment. What is the Market Like? As reported by Export.gov, the automotive market in Nigeria is growing. In 2015, demand for automobiles was over 675,000 units. In 2017, demand rose to 880,000 units in 2017. The current estimate is between 500,000 to 1,000,000 cars per year. Automobile imports made up to 11.5% of all international imports in 2017. The total economic value of automobiles imported into Nigeria in 2017 was 6.9 billion dollars, with 2.9 billion dollars just from passenger vehicles. This is due to the lack of capacity by local companies to mass produce automobiles at a rate that can meet consumer demand. However, the Nigerian government has plans to change this situation. As a matter of fact, since 2014, the government pushed for local production of vehicles. Such efforts involved increasing import tariffs, huge investments and funding. The government also established the NAIDP (Nigerian Automotive Industry Development Plan). The resulting plan involved major funding for 35 companies with the objective of producing around roughly 400,000 units in 2017. The result, however, was far lower than expected. The current production rate per year is estimated to be roughly 10,000-50,000 units. As a result, consumer demand for automobiles continues to be met by international makes like Toyota, Honda, Kia, Ford, and others. These brands take up most of the market in Nigeria. What are the Pros and Cons of Exporting Cars to Nigeria? Consumer Demand As mentioned in the Export.gov report, Nigeria depends heavily on car imports to meet consumer demand. Although tariffs have driven prices up substantially, and there are local car makers producing for the public, the demand is still very strong for cars and car parts from the USA. However, there has been a 60% drop in sales of vehicles imported from the US since 2014. Moreover, the average income per household is not enough to allow consumers to buy brand new cars regularly. As a result, the majority of the public has a strong preference for used cars, which are also imported. The effect of the tariffs has led large corporations, the major buyers of automobiles, to spend less on vehicles. Large corporations that would buy cars on a 4-year cycle before the tariffs are now cycling cars every 7 years to save money on the high costs of new cars. Low Local Competition As the industrial infrastructure in Nigeria cannot satisfy domestic demand, private consumers and companies still prefer international brands. Both new and used Toyotas, Hondas, and Kias are greatly in demand despite their higher price. This is due to their renowned reliability. Brands like Toyota, Honda, and Kia are currently dominant Nigeria, with new vehicles from these companies holding 1/3 of the automobile market. This means that exporting automotive products and car parts for these major brands is a lucrative and low-competition market. The public has long favored car-related products imported from the USA. However, not many consumers will be able to afford these products due to the low average income. The Rising Values of Cars in Nigeria In addition to the low competition, as Export.gov points out, the value of new vehicles is rising in Nigeria. This is due to various factors, from the depreciation of the Naira, the currency in Nigeria, to the tariffs placed on imports to promote local developments and industrialization. This means that products related to these cars will have more value and business will be lucrative as long as people are buying those cars. On the other hand, the consistent rise in car values will make individuals begin to favor locally produced vehicles rather than the much more expensive imports. The Opportunity in Exporting Car Parts On top of all the products that can be sold for car care, the export of car parts for used cars is a very good market. In 2014, the United States exported more than 80 million dollars worth of vehicle parts and accessories to Nigeria, according to U.S. Census Bureau figures. Those numbers are still growing because used cars continue to be heavily preferred to new cars in Nigeria. The Future Outlook of the Nigerian Automotive Market? At the moment, there are significant limitations to industrial production in Nigeria. But there are plans in motion to increase the quantity and quality of mass-produced car-related products. The Nigerian Automobile Council expects to create the capacity to build components such as batteries, belts, lights, and tires in Nigeria. These products will serve as the key to efficiently mass-produce automobiles in Nigeria. This means that the international market will continue to exist, but the limitations on importing automobiles from outside sources like the USA will become stronger as internal industrialization continues to grow, and Nigeria produces more cars. But, as export.gov points out, there will be other business opportunities. These will include the supply of equipment to domestic assemblers, spare parts and the setting up of local component manufacturing plants. |

I’ve come across a lot of customers complaining about high cost of shipping. Prices are key when they want to purchase used cars through Auto Auction Mall. As we only assist with shipping there’s little we can do about the costs. But with feedback, there are a few precautions intending buyers can apply. Here’s how you can chip off a hundred or more dollars on shipping. 1. Get Estimates of the Cost of Shipping Before you purchase, we can liaise with our shipping partners to get you estimates of domestic shipping (trucking) from the auction car lot to the port of origin within the US. As well as the ocean freight costs (RORO or containerized). I’ve had instances where customers, after knowing the cost of shipping, have changed their minds and either changed the location of search or downgrade to a less expensive car altogether. The key thing to focus on here is your overall budget. Given, you can’t buy a used car from the US on a strict budget, but you can still keep well within the limits of your pockets. You can also focus on the cities that are closest to ports that you can ship cars out of in the US. This will reduce the local shipping/trucking costs and prevent you from spending over $500 plus on local shipping alone. 2. Go for Run and Drive Cars Yes, salvaged cars may be cheaper and save you some money. Yes, if you’re a dealer you will be able to maximize profits. But a salvaged car is not RORO-able and will have to be shipped in a 40-foot container to Tin Can. Now here’s the deal, containerized shipping costs more than RORO as high as $1500 compared to the RORO average of $1000. Plus the stress of clearing a container where you only own 1 of the 3 – 4 cars inside is something you’ll be better off without. The stress and cost doubles if you are not the named consignee on the Bill of Lading. Rest assured, you will be at the mercy of the agent of the consignee who can quote any amount for you to pay and you can’t do anything about it. If one of the owners of the cars in your container is not ready financially to clear, be prepared for some demurrage. I only recommend containerized if you are shipping 2 or more cars at the same time. Otherwise, forget it. 3. Buy Cars from Auction lots that are as close to the ports as possible What this does, is that it reduces the local shipping/trucking cost. If you were to buy a car from say the east coast of the US and your chosen port of origin was in the west coast, you could easily spend up to $1000 on domestic shipping/trucking alone. If it’s not run and drive… well you can imagine the total shipping cost. On a general note, averagely for shipping your car purchases through Auto Auction Mall, it can be as low as $1400 and as high as $2000. This depends on a lot of factors including, distance, vehicle condition and port of origin. To avoid high cost of shipping, be sure to speak to our Nigerian Representaitve Femi, +2349015362533 for proper guidance. |

Buying a US auction car is a straightforward but lengthy process that all intending buyers should be aware of. Regardless of the average length of time (6-8 weeks), the benefits far outweigh the negatives. With Auto Auction Mall, you get to buy your dream cars at a fraction of the price. You also have access to used car auctions across entire North America from the comfort of your home. So you won the bid on that 2010 Toyota Venza. And you’re excited because you were able to save more than $2000. Fast forward to the shipping stage and the shipping company is telling you about delays and changes to the estimated time you were expecting the car to hit Tin Can port. Though you might be worried, but in most cases, there’s no reason to be. Sometimes delays can occur and change the shipping schedule entirely. It might be discomforting to you but some of these things can be prevented and some can’t be helped. Here are 6 reasons why your online auction used car purchase might experience some delays: Balance Payment Not Complete When you purchase a used car through AutoAuctionMall either via a “Buy Now” offer or the online auction system, usually within 24 hours you are forwarded a payment invoice with payment information for you to go to your bank and make payment. With most online auctions, the time frame for payment is 2 working days. Any longer and you stand the risk of incurring penalty payments which also have to be paid. Auto Auction Mall provides near accurate estimates on request. This is for you to have an idea of the cost of the vehicle and budget for it accordingly. In order to make this payment from Nigeria, you would require a US dollar denominated domiciliary account. You would need to exchange naira for dollars which you then deposit in your domiciliary account and transfer to Auto Auction Mall for payment of the car you just bought. It is advisable to pre-start these processes to save time and enable you make payment once you receive the invoice. Also note that offshore fee of $25 will be borne by you. Delays in sourcing dollars and or getting the right account to make payment is one of the delays customers face. But with the above insight, you should be able to prepare ahead and avoid it. Outstanding Penalty Payments When buying cars from online auctions, there is a chance of incurring penalty payments. Usually with payment delays or shipping delays (when you chose to handle the shipping yourself). With every auction company, your car purchase only has a grace period of 5 days to be taken out of the lot or incur demurrage penalty fees. Knowing about the penalty payments before purchase would give you a clear view of how to avoid it. So you don’t delay your purchase and its shipment when disputing the laid out penalty fees. For assistance with penalty fees, please feel free to call Auto Aution Mall Nigeria on +2349015362533. Car Title Not Fully Processed Depending on the Auction house involved and the condition of the car, there sometimes are delays in processing a used car title without which the car cannot be shipped. For a title to be awarded, there are regulatory bodies that would inspect the car to be able to determine if the title being applied for is the appropriate one. On Auto Auction Mall, the status of the title is usually indicated under title on the information page of the car you are interested in as received from the auction houses we connect you to. Vehicles with pending titles on Auto Auction Mall will usually have the countdown timer to the live auction paused on 64 days. It is resumed only when the auction house selling that particular car has been able to secure it. You want to be wary of this so you can avoid delays and if you like a particular car whose title is being processed, a wait time frame of 1 – 2 weeks usually less might be worth it for the title processing so you can purchase your dream car. The long and short of this is that without the proper title, the US customs wont clear your car to ship and this will become another possible point of delay. Booking and Vessel Not Yet Assigned Depending on the number of vessels available, the speed of US customs processing and the number of cars awaiting shipping, there might be unforeseen delays in the allocation of a vessel to bring your car purchase to Lagos, Nigeria. This is very uncommon but sometimes, delays of these nature may last 1 – 2 days depending and is nothing to panic about. The shipping company is just trying to book your car on a vessel to bring it to you. This applies to both RORO and Containerized shipping types. As mentioned, it rarely happens but when it does, you’ll be updated and shipping schedules will be adjused accordingly. Longer Port Calls or Offloading Delays This is one of the possible points of delay that is beyond anyone including the shipping company. If for instance, a vessel bound for Lagos with a scheduled port call in Dakar, is given 5 days or more before it is permitted to berth in the Dakar ports, this automatically adds an extra 5 days to the ETA (Estimated time of arrival) of your vehicle at TIn can. If this happens in 2 or more ports, it is the same ripple effect. Most times it doesnt and the variation in ETA is usually at most 3days to a week. Again, it is nothing to worry about and does not mean that your shipment is in jeopardy. Generally, 6 – 8 weeks is enough time for your vehicle to get to you. Except in special cases where there are delays due to a variety of factors. The above listed are the most common ones. However, rest assured, your shipment will get to you in one piece. Please feel free to visit www.autoauctionmall.com to access the largest online inventory of US used cars. The used car market in Nigeria is only showing signs of growing and becoming more and more popular. There is a high number of residents that find it very hard to get approved for financing with banks. Hence, many of these residents have turned to the used car market. Especially, buying their used car through auto auction sites in the US. So, learning about the process of shipping a car from the US to Nigeria has become imperative. There are many variables a buyer needs to learn about before shipping a car to Nigeria. It can be a complex and tricky process if one is not aware of the requirements. This simple guide can help you be as ready as you can be to receive your newly purchased used car. Buying Your Used Car From An Auction Site Before you can think of shipping a car you’ll have to, of course, buy one. Fortunately, buying a used or salvage car from an auto auction site is a very simple process. Your first step will be registering to the auction site and making a deposit. In most auction sites, the deposit has to be 10% of your total bidding power or of the amount you’d like to spend. For example, Auto Auction Mall asks for a deposit of minimum US$400, which means you can bid for a maximum of US$4,000 on the car you’d like to purchase. You can use the deposit to pay for the car you want, and it is also refundable. Once you’ve done this, you can search for the car that matches your needs in the site’s inventory. You can get in contact with the auction agent that they will assign to you. This way it’s easier for you to find something perfect for you. The auction agent can also help you during the bidding process and the final purchase. Dealer-Only Auctions VS Public Auctions One of the biggest advantages about buying used cars at auction sites is the access that they can provide you to dealer-only auctions. This type of auctions give you the chance of browsing a broad inventory and finding a great car for you at a wholesale price. Keep in mind that this only occurs if you register and pay the deposit, otherwise you’d only have access to public auctions where prices are not so attractive. “As Is, Where Is” This is a very important characteristic of used cars bought at auto auction sites. When you buy a used or salvage car from dealer-only auctions, these cars are sold “as is, where is” by the auction site. This means that when you’re buying a used car from an auto auction, you agree to buy the car with the faults or damages that come with it. You can arrange with your auction agent to have someone inspect the car for you. This way you can make sure that the description and everything you know about the car is accurate. Also, when you receive your car you know what to expect. Shipping a Car to Nigeria So now that you have purchased the car, it’s time for you to arrange the shipping to Nigeria. It’s important that you have the knowledge about every requirement. This way you avoid having any problems when getting your car through customs in Nigeria or the US. You’ll have the option of choosing between two different shipping methods: the traditional container shipping method, or the “Roll-On/Roll-Off” method, also known as RoRo. This method is the most popular one because is more convenient and less expensive. The container method is somewhat more expensive, but offers protection to the vehicle in case of experiencing weather issues. On the other hand, the RoRo method requires the car to be operable in order to roll on and off the cargo ramp, which can be an issue depending on the case. Forms & Payments Whichever method of transportation you decide to go with, the following are the documents you need to have ready to ship your vehicle. 1. Title and registration 2. Original purchase invoice 3. Insurance papers 4. Passport 5. The make, model and serial number 6. Packing list (this is required with the Container shipping method) 7. Certificate of value and origin The forms you’ll need to fill depend on the shipping agency that you decide to work with. Payments also will depend on the shipping agency. Most likely, your payment will include the standard storage, documents, and loading fees. Laws & Requirements You must know that laws for importing used cars into Nigeria can change at any given time. It’s important for you to check the laws before you arrange shipping a car, in order to be sure everything is covered. This is what you need to comply with when shipping your used car: 1. Have at hand proof of documentation (list of documents above) 2. Keep proof of paid tariffs 3. The car cannot surpass fifteen (15) years from the year of manufacture 4. The car will need to be opened in case of local customs inspection Insurance Any shipping agency that you choose will recommend that you have transit cargo insurance, also known as marine insurance. This is to protect your shipment against any damage or loss incurred in transit. It is very important that you check with your insurance company, if your insurance plan covers the shipping of your car. If not, you can easily arrange insurance coverage with the shipping agency you’re working with. Keep in mind the estimated cost for this is anywhere from 1.5 and 2.5 percent of your car’s estimated value. Clearance This is the final step you need to pass to get your car in Nigeria and start enjoying it. As we said before, keep in mind that you’ll need to constantly check laws and requirements. These can change at any given time by any of the countries involved. And you’ll want to be prepared. Make sure you double check that you have all documents that are required. Also, that your car meets the standards regulated by Nigerian custom authorities. |

You’re drawn in by an ad on Facebook or Google. It’s an ad for a used car being sold in US online car auctions. Even better, it seems the price is just spot on and might even help you save some extra. You start longing for the car especially if you were looking to purchase a car at the time. It all seems good and perfect. However, before you start the purchase process there are some key questions to ask yourself. Getting value for your money is critical when buying a used car from US auctions. Below are some questions you should definitely ask yourself before buying a used car from US auctions: What Kind Of Car Do You Want? Used or New? A brand new car is easy to buy if you can afford it; you’ll be buying directly from the assembly line usually through a primary dealer. Considering it is new, there’s really no need for deep thoughts about the condition of the car. If at worst there are defects, you’re still covered under the auto warranty. In cases of extreme issues, the car may be replace outrightly with another brand new one. With a used car, however, it is a different story. Used cars are rarely covered by warranties. It’s also hard to accurately verify the maintenance history of the car. You need to know if it was in an accident. Or even if it has been left dormant for a while. Yes, you definitely will be saving money. And Yes there are many used cars in good condition aside from the normal wear and tear. If you are looking for a cheaper alternative, used cars are your best bet. Just remember that used cars sold in US auctions such as Auto Auction Mall are sold on a “Where is as Is” basis. Do You Have a Budget For The Car? There are quite a lot of reasons why you could either buy a new or used car. The deciding factor becomes your budget. Do you have enough money to cover for a brand new car and the shipping cost? Or is the total amount for a brand new car perfect for a used car and its auction fees? With telephone assistance, our Nigerian rep can help you estimate costs so you have a clear view of what the total cost may be plus minus a few hundred dollars. Used car auctions allow you to purchase your dream cars for less than 30% of the price of a new one. Yes, it might come with some damages, but with proper maintenance, the car will serve you for years. Can You Inspect The Car, Take It for a Test Drive? Or Are You Fine With The Information Provided? Test driving cars sold in online auctions is not possible but you can hire independent third-party auto inspectors to visit the auction lot and inspect a particular car on your behalf. For less than $120, you can get a 150 point inspection report before making your purchase decision. In cases where you are trying to save, most auction houses provide as much information as possible about the listed cars. Go through this information thoroughly and with an extra $20 – $30, you can do a VIN check to ascertain the history of the car. On www.autoauctionmall.com, the VIN is publicly listed to help with your backchecks and inquiries so you can take advantage of that. How Much Damage Has The Car Incurred, Can You Fix It? How a vehicle was damaged could contribute meaningful suggestions on how it could be fixed. So if you’re buying a used car, you need to know if the vehicle has incurred some damage and if you can afford the cost of fixing it. Knowing the answer to both questions will help you decide if you want the car or not. Does My Desired Car Suit My Environment? The pot-holes on Nigerian roads, flooded areas, rocky terrains, and other adverse road conditions must be considered before making a choice of car. You need to know if buying a particular type of car would give you comfort or bore a hole in your income due to significant maintenance costs. If you buy a car that lacks the mechanical capacity to handle the poor roads, you’ll be spending more money on repairs. On the other hand, if you buy a car that suits the terrain, then you’ll be riding in comfort. Whatever your decision is in the end, we hope you put into due consideration your budget, your desired car, environment, and the state of the car.
