Foreign AffairsBarack Obama Explains Why He Refuses To Use The Term ‘islamic Terrorism’ Do You by abbay19(op): 3:49am On Oct 02, 2016
U.S President Barack Obama has finally explained why he doesn’t ever use the term ‘Islamic Terrorism’ when describing deadly terrorist attacks carried out by ISIS, saying ISIS’ activities affect all including Christians and Muslims.

Obama has been criticized by a lot of political observers and even Donald Trump for purposely refusing to refer to ISIS as Islamic terrorists, saying the U.S president has refused to acknowledge that the terror group use Islam to defend their wicked acts.

At a CNN presidential town hall meeting today, Obama was then asked to defend why he refused to say “Islamic” terrorism to a Gold Star mother.

“My son gave his life for acts of terrorism,” audience member Tina Houchins told Obama at the meeting. “Do you still believe that the acts of terrorism are done for the self-proclaimed Islamic religious motive? And if you do, why do you still refuse to use the term … Islamic terrorist?”

“There is no doubt, and I’ve said repeatedly, where we see terrorist organizations like al Qaeda or ISIL — They have perverted and distorted and tried to claim the mantle of Islam for an excuse for basically barbarism and death,” Obama explained.

“These are people who’ve killed children, killed Muslims, take S3@.x:’ slaves, there’s no religious rational that would justify in any way any of the things that they do,” he said. “But what I have been careful about when I describe these issues is to make sure that we do not lump these murderers into the billion Muslims that exist around the world, including in this country, who are peaceful, who are responsible, who, in this country, are fellow troops and police officers and fire fighters and teachers and neighbors and friends. If you had an organization that was going around killing and blowing people up and said, ‘We’re on the vanguard of Christianity.’ As a Christian, I’m not going to let them claim my religion and say, ‘you’re killing for Christ.’ I would say, that’s ridiculous,” Obama said.

“That’s not what my religion stands for. Call these folks what they are, which is killers and terrorists,” he added.
Obama then said that the danger of using the term ‘Islamic Terrorism’ stems from when “a president or people aspiring to become president get loose with this language.” to which CNN moderator Jake Tapper interjected saying he was referring to Donald Trump, but Obama denied that was the case.

Tapper interjected:

“You were clearly talking about the Republican nominee Donald Trump just then –“

“No, I wasn’t,” Obama dismissed Tapper swiftly. “It’s not unique to the Republican nominee. Look, I’m trying to be careful, we’re on a military base, I don’t insert partisan politics into this. I think that there have been a number of public figures where you start hearing commentary that is dangerous. Because what it starts doing is it starts dividing us up as Americans.”

Foreign Affairs84 Killed In Fresh Terror Attack In France by abbay19(op): 8:36am On Jul 15, 2016
Eighty-four people -- including several children -- died in the French city of Nice after a terrorist plowed a truck, which was "loaded with" grenades and other arms, into a large crowd during Bastille Day celebrations Thursday night, according to officials and the French president.

As of Friday 8 a.m. local time, 18 individuals were in critical condition, 50 were lightly injured, and 120 were receiving treatment, according to a spokesman for the Ministry of the Interior. Prior to the announcement Friday morning that 84 had died, the death toll had been 80.

The attack left an "apocalyptic" scene, according to eyewitnesses, on the city's famed Promenade des Anglais, which runs along the Mediterranean Sea. The French Riviera city was subsequently put on lockdown.

The exact nature of the attack was unclear, but the Paris anti-terrorism prosecutor's office was put in charge of the investigation.

French President Francois Hollande extended the country's state of emergency for three months and were mobilizing reservists. He said it was unclear if the attacker had any accomplices.

Hollande also discussed the threat of "Islamist terrorism." “The terrorist nature of this attack cannot be denied,” he said.

"France is horrified by what has just occurred - a monstrous act of using a truck to intentionally kill dozens of people celebrating 14th of July," Hollande said. "France is strong. France will always be stronger than the fanatics who want to strike France today."

World leaders were quick to condemn the deadly attack.

President Obama said in a statement, "On behalf of the American people, I condemn in the strongest terms what appears to be a horrific terrorist attack in Nice, France, which killed and wounded dozens of innocent citizens. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and other loved ones of those killed, and we wish a full recovery for the many wounded."

Secretary of State John Kerry said the U.S. Embassy in Paris was working to account for the welfare of U.S. citizens in Nice. The American consulate in Marseille said it was trying to "determine if any U.S. citizens were injured in the event."

The State Department tweeted, "US Citizens in #France: Avoid area near attack in Nice. Monitor local press for updates & exercise caution."

Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau tweeted, "Canadians are shocked by tonight's attack in Nice. Our sympathy is with the victims, and our solidarity with the French people."

Chinese premier Li Keqiang said, "We strongly condemn terrorism of all forms. We express our condolences to the victims and we will fight all kinds of terrorism."

European Council president Donald Tusk said the world stands united with the French people. "It is a tragic paradox that the victims of the attack people celebrating liberty, quality and fraternity," he said. "We will stand united with the families of victims, the French people and the government in the fight against violence and hatred."

Julie Bishop, Australia's foreign minister, said three Australians suffered minor injuries while fleeing the scene. "It has shocked France, it has rocked it to its core," she said, adding that the attack was particularly symbolic, because it occurred on Bastille Day. "This should have been a time of great national pride and celebration."

Hollande also slammed the attack on the national holiday.

"France was struck on the day of its National Day, the 14 of July, a symbol of freedom, liberty, human rights denied by these fanatics -- and France is obviously their target," he said.

"I would like to express on behalf of the nation our solidarity with the victims and with their families. All resources, all our means are being deployed in order to help the injured."

Christian Estrosi, president of the Nice region, told French TV that the motorist "fired on the crowd, according to the police who killed him" and said that "the truck was loaded with arms, loaded with grenades."

The truck was driven by someone who appeared to have "completely premeditated behavior," Estrosi said, adding that the attacker appears to "have used, while ramming his vehicle, a firearm through the window."

French Interior Minister Bernard Cazaneuve said all demonstrations will be banned in Nice over the next few days.

Jimmy Ghazal, 39, a Lebanese man visiting Nice with his family, told ABC News that after the fireworks concluded, he heard people screaming and heard what sounded like gunshots. He saw people run to shelter.

Ghazal said he saw a big truck drive "through all the security.”

“The kids thought it was part of the fireworks," he told ABC News. "We just told them it was part of the fireworks.”

Video showed crowds of screaming people running through the streets in panic.

Kerry said in a statement, "Today's horrendous attack in Nice is an attack against innocent people on a day that celebrates Liberty, Equality, and Fraternity.

"On behalf of all Americans, and especially the great many with close ties to France, I offer our deepest condolences to the friends and family of those who were killed and our hopes for a speedy recovery to those who were injured.

"I was proud to stand alongside French leaders earlier today at Bastille Day celebrations in Paris, and the United States will continue to stand firmly with the French people during this time of tragedy. We will provide whatever support is needed."

Earlier Thursday, French President Francois Hollande had said France’s state of emergency -- which has been in place since the Paris terror attacks in November -- would be lifted later this month.

CrimeBlood Bath In Lagos Cult War Claims 5 by abbay19(op): 7:59am On Jun 05, 2015
At least five youths, belonging to a villainous group on the Lagos Island, were on Wednesday night shot dead along Ajah Road in a war of supremacy amongst the rival groups, thereby plunging the state into pandemonium and counter attacks.

Our correspondent gathered that the deceased, along with other youths from Lagos Island, went for a naming ceremony in Ajah area of the state and were returning home in a chartered Volkswagen bus when another set of hoodlums opened fire on the bus and killed five of the occupants.

The driver of the vehicle and one other youth, who pretended to have been dead from the bullet wounds they sustained, were said to have escaped back to the Island to report the incidents to their relatives.

The deceased, who were identified to be boys working with the chairman of the National Union of Road Transport workers (NURTW), Oyebanji branch, Lagos Island, Alhaji Mustapha Adio Adekunle (aka. Seego), include, Samson, Ganiyu, Idris, Ladi and one other.

LEADERSHIP FRIDAY learnt that blood bath commenced on the Lagos Island when the news got to relatives of the deceased and Seego as large a number of hoodlums gathered and started attacking relatives of those boys they believed to have carried out the killing.

To this end, houses belonging to Olokodana family on the Island were torched by the miscreants who claimed to be protesting the brutal killing of the five boys.

Also, residences and lock-up shops belonging to one Tunde (Alabi Yellow), who was alleged to have caused the killing, was invaded by the hoodlums and razed down.

Residents said trouble started last week Sunday on the Island when Seego and another leader of notorious boys, identified as Tunde (Alabi Yellow) met at a social gathering and Seego asked Yellow to bow for him, but refused.

It was further gathered that Seego then ordered his boys to deal with Yellow by breaking bottle on his head, even as they tore his clothes into shreds.

The resident, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said it was in a reprisal attack that some supporters of Yellow laid ambush for some of Seego’s boys who went to Ajah for a naming ceremony and opened fire on their bus.

It was learnt that the attackers also cut off the head of Samson popularly known as Songa, believed to be the one that broke bottle on Yellow’s head on the order of Seego at the social gathering.

The Police Public Relations officer, Lagos Command, Ken Nwosu, who confirmed the incident, said two of the attacked youths died and two others who sustained bullet injuries were presently at an undisclosed hospital where they were receiving urgent medical attention.

PoliticsNIMC Shortlists Mint, Secure ID, 4 Odas For Local Production Of National ID Card by abbay19(op): 5:25pm On Jan 19, 2015
The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has shortlisted six firms for possible selection as local manufacturers of the National electronic identity card (National eID Card).

The six firms, including Electronic Pay Plus Ltd, the Nigerian Security Printing and Minting Plc and Secure ID Ltd, that emerged after the financial bid opening at the weekend in Abuja, have now qualified for the final stage of the selection process.

The financial bid opening for the local production of the National eID Card is the penultimate step in the selection of local manufacturers for the eID Card launched by the President in August 2014.

THISDAY learnt that to ensure sufficient local capacity, NIMC plans to appoint a few of the firms and guide them in the process of attaining the appropriate technical specifications and global standards which it has set.

Currently there is no local manufacturing firm that has been certified and or accredited or with sufficient experience to produce the eID Card. However sources close to the Card Managemnt Services department confirmed that as part of the commission’s local content policy, a strategic plan has been put in place to ensure that local manufacturers with various related levels of comepetencies are enabled to acquire the required technical expertise. This, the source pointed out, would be guided to achieve the set standards and certification to ensure that in the near future the Commission will no longer have to import the eID Cards the way it currently does.

This will help build local content level, indigenious expertise and technology transfer as well as create employment opportunities in line with the Transformation Agend of the Presdient.

NIMC’s General Manager, Finance and Investment, Mr. Ibrahim Abdullahi, who chaired the bid opening explained that the process which had been ongoing for sometime now included a study of the existing cards Industry – both card manufacture and card personalisation.

This, according to him, was done to enable the commission ascertain the best strategy to adopt to support possible local manufacturers to achieve the required capacities and competencies within a short time, in line with the commission’s objectives under the card scheme of the National Identity Management System (NIMS) and more importantly in line with the Mr. President’s Transformation Agenda.

Abdullahi noted that the commission was also mindful of the fact that the NIMS Card scheme, when fully issued will have in excess of 150million in circulation and with an estimated annual replacement rate of about 15 per cent.

He added that the commission worked on the design of the card for over one year. This partly accounts for the long time it took to start issuing the Cards after Government gave its approval in November 2012, noting that NIMC could confidently say its card is unique and very difficult to counterfeit or forge.

Abdullahi pointed out that since the card was launched in August 2014, the commission had taken delivery of about 6.6million cards, part of the 13million cards under the pilot scheme approved in 2012. Already these cards are being issued to their owners from Abuja and Lagos and in another week or two, from all State Offices of the NIMC, nationwide.

He enjoined the companies, most of whom were not represented by their chief executives to please take the exercise and the impending assignment very serious, warning that the commission would not hesitate to wield the big stick to avoid ugly situations of the past where successful bidders had held the commission to ransom for non-performance and thereby slowed the pace of implementation of the NIMS project.

PoliticsINEC Urges Voters To Turn Up For Pvcs, CVR by abbay19(op): 9:06pm On Aug 13, 2014
The FCT INEC has advised residents to participate in the forthcoming issuance of the Permanent Voters’ Cards (PVCs) and the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) scheduled to hold between Aug. 15 and 17 in the territory.

Mr Okezie Nwankwo, Head of Department, Voter Education and Publicity, made the appeal on Wednesday in Abuja in a telephone interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

“Our people in the FCT need to know the correct date for both exercises. We don’t want people to get confused. We need to create this awareness to ensure the success of the exercise.

“The collection of the PVCs begins on Friday, Aug. 15 in the FCT and 11 other states simultaneously and ends on Aug. 17.

“The point of collection is at the same centre you registered and collected your Temporary Voter Card (TVC).

“After the 3-day period, collection will continue but at the local government headquarters for states and area councils for the FCT until 30 days before the elections,’’ Nwankwo said.

He explained that voters who wished to move their polling centre closer to their place of residence should apply to the Resident Electoral Commissioner through their electoral officers.

“Once you apply, your data will be moved to your place of choice and cancelled in the previous place of domicile.

“The TVC will be retrieved and the PVC will be issued to you,’’ he said.

Nwankwo urged voters to go to their collection centres with their TVCs to exchange for the PVCs.

He said that the PVCs would not be collected by proxy.

“You cannot collect for anyone, no matter how close they are to you. You cannot collect for your wife, husband or child.

“Your fingerprints will be needed and since fingerprints are unique to each individual, you cannot thumbprint for someone else,’’ he said.

The FCT INEC officer said that the CVR would be carried out at the ward level from Aug. 20 to Aug. 25. (NAN). http://leadership.ng/news/380909/inec-urges-voters-turn-pvcs-cvr

President Goodluck Jonathan has sought the approval of the National Assembly to borrow $1 billion (N162bn) to finance the war against insurgency.
Jonathan made the request in a letter to the Senate President, David Mark, entitled: “Tackling Ongoing Security Challenges: Need for Urgent Action”.
The president said that this action was necessary to enable government upgrade equipment, train the armed forces and security services as well as take care of other logistic needs.
“You are no doubt cognisant of the ongoing and serious security challenges which the nation is facing as typified by the Boko Haram terrorist threat.
President Goodluck Jonathan
President Goodluck Jonathan
“I would like to bring to your attention the need to upgrade equipment, training and logistics of our armed forces and security services to enable them more forcefully confront this serious threat.
“For this reason, I seek the concurrence of the National Assembly for external borrowing of not more than $1 billion,” the letter read.
He said that this loan included government to government arrangement in order to effectively carry out the upgrade.
The Federal Government had appropriated N968.1 billion for Defence in the 2014 budget.

PoliticsAlleged N600m Fraud Trial: Lagos Speaker, Ikuforiji, Knows Fate July 11 by abbay19(op): 11:41pm On Jul 07, 2014
Mr. Ikuforiji and his aide are facing a 54-count amended charge of money laundering of over N600 million.
—————————————-
Justice Ibrahim Buba of the Federal High Court, Lagos, has fixed July 11 to rule on a ‘No case submission’ application filed by Adeyemi Ikuforiji, Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly.
Mr. Ikuforiji and Oyebode Atoyebi, his aide are facing a 54-count amended charge of money laundering amounting to over N600 million.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, accused the Speaker and his aide of receiving the money from the Lagos State House of Assembly without passing through a financial institution.
At the resumed trial on Monday, Wole Olanipekun, counsel to Mr. Ikuforiji urged the court to discharge and acquit his client of all the charges in the amended count.
“There are three issues raised for determination, from constitutional to jurisdictional to that of sovereignity of the Office of the Speaker of the House of Assembly before arriving to the fact that no evidence has been adduced at all to prove the offence of money laundering,” said Wole Olanipekun, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria.
“Let me say this, on a very serious note, this is the first case of criminal proceeding in this country that a Speaker of a House is accused of money laundering.
“Not on money consumed by him in a personal capacity, but in respect of funds officially released after due requisition and spent on officials and staff,” Mr. Olanipekun added.
The prosecution had closed its case at the last sitting, on June 20, after calling its two witnesses – Adebayo Adeniyi, an investigator with the EFCC and Adewale Olatunji, a former Clerk of the Lagos State House of Assembly.
During his evidence, Mr. Adeniyi had detailed how the defendants allegedly laundered millions of naira through honorarium, renovation of the Speaker’s residence and guest house as well as to the Speaker’s wife, Mayowa Ikuforiji.
When it was time for the defence to open its case, Mr. Olanipekun filed a ‘no case submission.’
The Speaker’s counsel said that it would make a mockery of the country’s criminal justice system to prosecute someone for money laundering while discharging his official assignments.
“Just (recently), the Vanguard newspaper carried a headline that said $3.5 million was released to the Green Eagles and that a Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria was to convey that amount to them in Brazil,” said Mr. Olanipekun.
“By parity of reasoning, in respect of government transactions, the Money Laundering Act does not apply.”
Mr. Olanipekun said that financial proceedings and procedures of the House of Assembly are covered by financial transactions under Section 25 (of the Money Laundering Act).
“All the documents tendered by the prosecution in respect of official releases are from the account of the House of Assembly contained in Lagos,” he said.
“The Office of the Speaker is not a personal office, but a public office constitutionally created by Section 92. Each of the accounts have not accused the applicant of diverting public funds to his purse,” Mr. Olanipekun continued.
“PW2 (Second prosecution witness) when I put a question to him under cross examination whether the money was illegal, he answered sarcastically that it was not illegal. That unless government was illegal, then the money coming from it will be illegal.”
Mr. Olanipekun noted that the question of the Speaker’s transaction exceeding the stipulated threshold should not arise.
“Apart from imprisonment, the law stipulates that 25 percent of the laundered money be forfeited to the federal government.
“Will the money of the Lagos State government forfeited to the federal government, the answer is in the negative.
“And how do you make him (the Speaker) forfeit what others had utilized?”
Mr. Olanipekun also stated that his client is sovereign and was covered under the immunity law, a federal legislation, which protects the accused person from criminal prosecution.
He further said that the Speaker was being charged under the 2004 Money Laundering Act, which had been repealed by the 2011 version. “This trial amounts to witch-hunting and criminal prosecution should not be used for that,” he added.
In his response, Godwin Obla, counsel to the EFCC, said that the defendants were deliberately charged under the 2004 Act to avoid the Bode George treatment.
“The objection as to the accused persons being charged under 2004 is not relevant
“If we had charged them with 2011 Act, they would have used the Bode George example which the Supreme Court stated that no such law existed as at the time of committing the offence. That’s why we decided to use the 2004. The offences were committed between 2010 and 2011,” said Mr. Obla, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria.
“The wording of the statutes of the 2004 and 2011 Acts has not changed, what has changed is the threshold,” he added.
The EFCC counsel said that the Speaker’s aide had admitted, in a confessional statement, that he collected cash on 57 different occasions and Mr. Ikuforiji had also admitted that the money was remitted to him.
On the issue of immunity, Mr. Obla said that the constitution states that it covers only the president, vice president, governor, and deputy governor.
“The privilege of the members of the House does not include protection from criminal arrests,” Mr. Obla added.
PoliticsBREAKING: Adamawa Impeachment: Nyako May Resign by abbay19(op): 11:33pm On Jul 07, 2014
“His Excellency is on his way back to resign so that his Deputy can take over.”
—————————————–
Barring any last minute change of heart, Governor Murtala Nyako is set to resign from office.
Mr. Nyako alongside his deputy, Bala Ngilari, is presently facing impeachment moves from members of the state assembly over allegations of gross misconduct.
A seven-member panel set up by the state acting Chief Judge, Ambrose Mammadi, to investigate the allegations, commenced sitting in Yola on Monday.
In what observers said was a move to stall the impeachment process, the governor declared Monday and Tuesday as public holiday.
His Chief of Staff, Abdulrahman Abba, who announced the holiday on Sunday, said it was to enable indigenes of the state pray for the return of peace to the state.
Dspite the holiday, the panel began its sitting at J & J Holiday Villa at Karewa GRA amidst tight security.
Also, although the Assembly in its directive to the Chief Judge to set up the panel said the sitting should be made in public; security operatives denied Journalists access to the venue of the sitting.
A source close to Mr. Nyako, who asked not to be named because he is not permitted to talk to the media, informed PREMIUM TIMES that Mr. Nyako, who left Yola for Abuja on Sunday, is on his way back to the Adamawa capital to tender his resignation letter.
“His Excellency is on his way back to resign so that his Deputy can take over,” our source said.
We also gathered that Mr. Nyako decided to resign and pave the way for his deputy to be sworn-in; a move that would force the Speaker of the Assembly, Umaru Fintiri, to also leave office.
“You know the speaker and the deputy governor come from the same town and local government, so once the Deputy Governor is sworn in, he (the speaker) will have to resign too,” our source said.
Last minute efforts to save governor
While Mr. Nyako contemplates resignation, PREMIUM TIMES also gathered that a former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, flew into Yola Monday and is reportedly making moves to stop the impeachment from materialising.
“Turaki (Mr. Abubakar) still enjoys the loyalty of some of the lawmakers and the plot now is to use his might to ensure that the required 2/3 majority is not achieved to remove the governor,” our source added.
He also said the former VP already had a meeting with Nuhu Ribadu, another All Progressives Congress, APC, stalwart from the state in order to perfect the plan.

The new tuition fees range from N76,750 to N158,250.
The Lagos State University, LASU, Students Union, on Thursday directed its members not to pay the new tuition fees until a further reduction was made by the state government.
This was disclosed in a press statement, signed by the Union’s President, Nurudeen Yusuf.
It said that the tuition fee was high, in view of the economic situation of the state, when compared to the relative fees payable in other universities across the country.
The state governor, Babatunde Fashola, had on June 11, announced a 34 per cent to 60 per cent reduction on the LASU tuition fees. This was sequel to protests from the students and civil society groups.
The University’s Governing Council had on June 20 released a breakdown of the new tuition fees which ranged from N76, 750 to N158, 250.
It was against the increase in fees announced in 2011, from N25, 000 to N198, 000 for humanities and education, while medical students were required to pay N348, 000.
However, the students union insisted that the fees be reduced to N46, 500 for returning students and N65, 500 for fresh students, as proposed by them to the governor.
Meanwhile, the LASU management had on June 23 recalled students from recess, directing them to commence payment of the new tuition fees and their registration. This was in spite of the on-going lecturers’ strike that started on May 20.
The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, SSANU, LASU Chapter, had also been on strike since May 26.
The Students’ Union said its decision was taken at a meeting on June 30.
“Following the meeting, the union resolved that students should resume with immediate effect but strongly warns that no student should pay the fee, until further notice,” the statement said.
It, however, called for the reduction or withdrawal of some charges such as: acceptance fee, tuition, caution and field trip/teaching practice levy.
According to the statement, other charges the students requested for reduction include laboratory and practical/workshop/studio work.
The statement also rejected the July 6 deadline for payments and tasked the management to suspend payment of the fees until the union concludes negotiations with the government.
It also noted that students who paid cannot access the registration portal.
The statement added that the students complained that the management had yet to resolve some pending issues with the Quick Teller.
“SSANU is also on strike, hence there is no one to attend to issues relating to inability to register for our courses and problems with payment,” the statement noted.
It stated that the union remained unrelenting and consistent in its agitation against the hike, which it said, negated the founding ideology of the university.
