I think it's not a prestigious job especially county jails in the mid west but it's less stressful compared working in a restaurant or departmental stores . primary there are two shifts 7am to 7pm and 7pm to 7am, for four to five days but as Nigerians we work extra for over time.
my issue is that instead of people seeing it as a stepping stone we end up doing it like a career path

State and federal do pay better you cannot compare it with county job. Law enforcement is diverse industry that why i said yesterday wages and requirement are different. The los Angeles county pay well people use it as a start and working shift are like this: 8/5( you work 8 hours for five days, 10/4( 10 hours for 4 days. In the same county Sheriff's which is state government own pays bigger Deputy sheriff T start from 6k with benefit, Probations not up to that.There are park rangers, California highway patrol, and so much more, not to talk of federal. So am not living in the Midwest that why am using the state and county to explain my point. The entry level jailer that pays more than 4,500 in Inglewood won't paid the same in those Midwest state.

My point to the person am quoting is that they don't stay long like he said. Even Lateral officer from other agencies can move up faster but lot of them like patrol gig, which is different from custody. It is dual track now.

Talking of fulfillment, so what are you going to tell people who jump into nursing because of the pay. I choose my field because it is what I really wanted to do, not for the money, if am looking for that money Science would have been my career choice, but I don't need to go to somewhere because other are going there.

This is exactly what Nigerians are good in doing, copying. If Nigerians hear that someone Ade it in Malaysia, everyone flocks there. No one does anything unique.It pains to see a graduate of engineer who end up being a make artist or goes into music just because davido made it in the music industry. Every Nigerians dream is to work in oil company as if vocational skill is a curse or an insult.

It depends on the Nigerian you no, although you might be correct to a certain point. Many Nigerian want to be a Nurse or work in the health care field, whereas some make there own choice to total different area. Education, HR, government, LE,private, engineering, Science and so on. You go into a field that suit you at least nobody is going to bear it with you either negative or positive the outcome.

It requires a college degree in California for now, requirements may be different in your state. In the same state the requirements for police is high school diploma so it is not the same statewide. And saying 4-6k is noting in CA for entry level job seems you are joking, entry level for that matter. So tell us how much high school diploma in the correctional dept are taking home in your state. I even posted a recent job bulletin not internet cover those guys are posting without a state or name of the hiring county.

l Traveled through Northern California and Reno for work with a senior colleague at different towns. I met another contractor who told us his grandma’s house was on fire about 80 miles from where we were. Anyway I underestimated the disaster until I realized later some areas I passed through were affected. That’s very bad.

Some innocent lives are gone in the fire, but the man is going to enjoy is life in prison and come out after serving the necessary time.

Can I just say a few more things...
There are different types of prisons. Secondly the jail population is going to be different in a small city vs a large city. This same logic applies to a county jail inside of a city.
When I worked at one of the major hospitals in my city, sometimes inmates would be brought in for treatment. We as xray techs would get called down to do xrays on injuries. Sometimes these injuries were self inflicted just to get a break from the jail. And at other times the behavior of the inmates were so crass. The officers would give us certain protocols to follow bc the inmates were not to be trusted or left alone at any cost. Several of us were invited to go work at the jail as xray techs and we were advised by another woman of her own experiences. So in this case, the second handed experiences were enough for us. Second handed experiences are ok, as long as the source can be trusted.

Department protocols need to be followed, so you no those department, officers get sued by the inmates, so if you are following the department rule the officers is golden but if not liability comes in, and the Fed still control everyone of them as there oversight functions because so states are not abiding to the rules . Most prison in ca do have there own in house doctor, nurses so they do not need to get any medical attention outside.

The man improper actions has caused total destruction of life and properties on 6,000 hectares of land since a week now. Fifty one year old playing with fire in a state that do witness drought for most part of the year. When people commit crime the law is there to stipulate necessary punishment, unless it is a lawless society.

Never visited a prison.... not a Hollywood fan. Hearsay....no. I mix a whole lot...job allows me to... and not just hi and bye. On Corrections..... my work mate. ..not fellow employee in the same company...work mate...a Corrections officer...quit...because of the 'horrors'. I know a few others.... all thugged out... if you see them coming....you'll cross the street without first looking...when you hear some of the things they say. ..you'll wonder if they had heart surgery and the surgeon forgot to reinstall the heart. You can live here for zillion years not my problem, I work LEO no biggy if your work place is not paying well change it . When you use high school diploma to enter a job expect low pay too. Or you want them to pay high school, degree holder, PhD employees same ways. What I notice is some Nigerian don't want to move forward educationally here so only then have the reason for that they prefer 10,11,12 dollars job.

As for Hollywood portrayal, it is dramatized to a degree but it is based on fact. Prison is composed of some of the following in society, murders, drug dealers, pedophiles, rapists, and just mentally unstable etc. Imagine all these people forced together with no freedoms, being told when to eat, sleep, etc and none of them want to be there. Its not glamorous in any way but it takes a special kind of person to do it daily. And some people could find it rewarding like my ex co-worker's wife.

If people don't commit crimes nobody is going to put them to jail. Judge this real case, a man of 51 years old in Medocino put fire on 6,000 hectares of land burning houses, business, wildlife and so . Are you going to pat him in the back or punish for arson. The incident is the going on.

At the age of 60 most CO are Sergeant or Commander, not the officers you see on your streets no matter the state.

There to get a first hand experience first, am giving you my full time experience not Hollywood movie or hearsay evidence, and you cannot compare California pay with those Midwest stay, price comparison is wide just look at housing cost for example.

After academy and you are done with what is called POST Basic you can earn more than 6,000 before tax, a retired deputy is still taking home 8k, so is not a job for many . So what is your prestigious job .
