Politics › The Many Faces Of Chima Anyaso: Questions Bende Must Ask by Abdulmalik231(op): 11:38am On Oct 04
Politics is ultimately about trust.

And now that Dr. Chimaobi Desmond Anyaso has emerged as the Labour Party candidate for Bende Federal Constituency in the 2027 House of Representatives election, the conversation should move beyond slogans, endorsements and campaign excitement.

The people of Bende—and indeed the leadership of Abia State—deserve to examine the public record of every candidate seeking their trust.

This is therefore not a call for anyone to prejudge Chima Anyaso. It is a call to ask questions, examine records and demand transparency.

A POLITICAL JOURNEY WORTH EXAMINING

Chima Anyaso has been active in Abia politics for several years and has operated across different political platforms.

In 2022, he emerged as the Young Progressives Party (YPP) deputy governorship candidate alongside Enyinnaya Nwafor. Contemporary reports from that period documented his role as Nwafor's running mate.

Today, he is the Labour Party's candidate for Bende Federal Constituency and has publicly aligned himself with Governor Alex Otti and the current political direction of Abia State. Recent reports have documented his campaign activities with Labour stakeholders and groups supporting the Otti administration.

Political realignment is not, by itself, a crime. Politicians are entitled to change parties and political positions.

But it raises a legitimate question:

What are the principles that remain constant when the political platform changes?

That is a question the people of Bende have the right to ask.

THE CEECON–GTBANK CONTROVERSY

There is another part of Anyaso's public record that deserves careful examination.

In January 2019, THISDAY reported that Anyaso and Ceecon Energy Oil & Gas Limited were facing a Federal High Court criminal charge involving allegations of forgery and fraud connected to a credit facility of about ₦2.1 billion. The report said the prosecution alleged that documents bearing Total Nigeria's letterhead were forged and presented to Guaranty Trust Bank.

However, there is an important part of the story that should not be omitted.

Anyaso publicly denied the allegations. In his response reported by THISDAY, he maintained that the dispute was fundamentally a disagreement over a banking facility and disputed debt, and that there had been no fraud or diversion of ₦2 billion.

Therefore, the responsible question is not to declare him guilty of fraud.

The responsible question is:

What was the eventual legal outcome of the matter, and has the candidate fully accounted for the controversy surrounding it?

That is a legitimate question for anyone seeking public office.

WHEN A CANDIDATE PROMISES INTEGRITY

There is an interesting dimension to the present campaign.

In June 2026, Anyaso himself spoke publicly about the need for integrity, honesty, empathy, stronger institutions and trust-based leadership.

Those are admirable principles.

But once a politician places integrity and institutional trust at the centre of his message, the public is equally entitled to examine his own history against those standards.

This is not about attacking a man.

It is about applying the same standard to the person seeking to represent the people.

THE OTTI CONNECTION

Today, the political relationship between Governor Alex Otti and Chima Anyaso is no longer merely a matter of speculation.

The Governor has publicly congratulated Anyaso as the Labour Party candidate for Bende Federal Constituency and described him in highly favourable terms.

Political groups supporting the Otti administration have also publicly declared support for Anyaso's candidacy.

That makes another question important:

What exactly does the Governor know about the candidate he is publicly associated with, and has every relevant issue concerning Anyaso's past been sufficiently examined?

This is not an accusation against the Governor.

It is a question about political responsibility.

Those who stand closest to power inevitably attract greater scrutiny.

BENDE DESERVES QUESTIONS, NOT PERSONALITY POLITICS

Supporters of Anyaso point to his business career, philanthropy, community interventions and political experience. Labour stakeholders and other groups have publicly cited these qualities in explaining their support for his candidacy.

Those claims should also be examined on their merits.

At the same time, questions surrounding his political history and the previously reported Ceecon–GTBank controversy should not simply disappear because he has become the candidate of a major political party.

Bende should not choose representatives merely because they are popular, wealthy, connected to power, generous, or capable of mobilising crowds.

The deeper questions should be:

What is the candidate's record?

What principles has he consistently defended?

What controversies surround his public life?

What has been established, what remains disputed, and what has been resolved?

What exactly is he promising Bende, and what evidence supports those promises?

A MESSAGE TO THE PEOPLE OF BENDE

The 2027 election will not merely be about choosing a political party.

It will be about entrusting one individual with the voice of Bende Federal Constituency at the National Assembly.

That responsibility is too important for blind loyalty.

It requires scrutiny.

It requires questions.

It requires candidates to open their records to public examination.

And it requires voters to distinguish between campaign narratives and verifiable facts.

Chima Anyaso is now the Labour Party's candidate.

That fact makes scrutiny even more important—not less.

Let the people examine his record.

Let him answer the difficult questions.

Let Governor Alex Otti and every political stakeholder supporting him also ensure that the standard applied to public office seekers is the same standard demanded of everyone else.

Because before Bende gives anyone its mandate, Bende deserves to know exactly who is asking for it.
