Tafsir Ibn Kathir on Surah 33:56:  


The people of Israel said to Moses: “Does your Lord pray?” 
His Lord called him saying: “O Moses, they asked you if your Lord prays. Say to them: ‘Yes, I do pray, and my angels pray upon my prophets and my messengers,’” and Allah then sent down on his messenger: “Allah and His angels pray . . .”

Both the Hadiths and the Tafsirs also confirm that Allah prays. Let us consider now the Hadith of a renowned Muslim scholar.


The “Meadows of the Righteous” (Arabic: Riyadh as-Salihin) is a compilation of important verses from the Quran by renowned Muslim scholar, Al-Nawawi (1233–1277). The “Meadows of the Righteous” is a collection of vital Quranic with commentary from authentic Hadiths to clarify their true meaning. Al-Nawawidocumented the following details under the heading, Book of Knowledge, 241. Chapter: The Excellence of Knowledge:


1387. Abu Umama reported that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, “Allahand His angels and the people of the heavens and the earth, even the ants in their rocks and the fish, pray for blessings on those who teach people good.” (At-Tirmidhi)


And


2685. Abu Umamah al-Bahili narrated: “Two men were mentioned before the Messenger of Allah. One of them a worshipper, and the other a scholar. So the Messenger of Allah said: ‘The superiority of the scholar over the worshipper is like my superiority over the least of you.’ Then the Messenger of Allah said: ‘Indeed Allah, His Angels, the inhabitants of the heavens and the earths – even the ant in his hole, even the fish – say Salat upon the one who teaches the people to do good. (Hasan) — English Translation of Jami’ At-Tirmidhi, Compiled by Imam Hafiz ‘Eisa Mohammad Ibn ‘Eisa At-Tirmidhi, From Hadith no. 2606 to 3290, translated by Abu Khaliyl


The above Hadith is categorized as “Hasan”which means it is recognized as authentic by Muslim scholars. Read carefully the words of Muhammad in the above Hadith once again. He is clearly testifying that Allah, like the rest of the creations, “say Salat (prayer)upon the one who teaches the people to do good

To whom is Allah praying to? Is there another deity above him to whom he supplicates? The very suggestion that God prays is totally absurd. In fact, we are told in the Quran that not only does Allah pray for Muhammad but he also prays for his worshippers.

In view of their importance, we have provided three different translations of the following Quranic verses:


Surah 2:156-157:

Who, when an affliction afflicts them, say, “Surely we belong to Allah, and surely to Him we are returning.”Upon those are the prayers from their Lord, and mercy; and those are they who are the right-guided. (Muhammad Ghali)


Who, in adversity say: “We belong to Allah and to Him we shall return.” On those will be prayers and mercy from their Lord, those are guided. (Hasan Al-Fatih Qaribullah)


Those who if a disaster or any other thing hated struck them they said: “We are to God, and we are to Him returning.”Those, on them are prayers from their Lord and a mercy, and those are the guided. (Samira)


The Arabic word for “prayers” in the above Quranic verses is “salawatun.” These verses clearly testify that Allah’sprayers are upon those who return to him in faith. This proves that Allah prays. In concurrence with the teachings of the Quran

How can Allah be the best of all cheaters?

The word makir is always used disparagingly, and never in a positive context. It is often used to describe someone sly and dishonest. This is because of the way a makir deceives - they set out to cheat you by deception. It is highly inappropriate for Allah to use this word to describe himself; especially when two of his names are الحق (the truth) and الوكيل (the dependable).

In the following Qur'an verses, Allah reveals to us that he is the "best deceiver".


Qur'an 3:54


Arabic: ومكروا ومكر الله والله خير الماكرين


Transliteration: Wamakaroo wamakara Allahu waAllahu khayru almakireena


Literal: And they cheated/deceived and God cheated/deceived, and God (is) the best (of) the cheaters/deceivers.

Arabic: وقد مكر الذين من قبلهم فلله المكر جميعا يعلم ماتكسب كل نفس وسيعلم الكفار لمن عقبى الدار


Transliteration: Waqad makara allatheena min qablihim falillahi almakru jameeAAan yaAAlamu ma taksibu kullu nafsin wasayaAAlamu alkuffaru liman AAuqba alddari


Literal: And those from before them had cheated/deceived/schemed, so to God (is) all the cheatery/deceit/scheme. He knows what every self gains/acquires , and the disbelievers will know to whom (is) the house's/home's end/turn (result).

Supporting evidence in other verses and hadith


Independent corroboration that sulb in the Qur'an refers to the back or backbone is found in another verse on the same subject using a different word for back. Verse 7:172 says that the offspring of the children of Adam are from their backs (loins). Instead of sulb, the word here is thahr, which means the back, as is clearly the case in other verses such as Quran 6:31.


When thy Lord drew forth from the Children of Adam - from their loins - their descendants...

Arabic: مِنۢ بَنِىٓ ءَادَمَ مِن ظُهُورِهِمْ ذُرِّيَّتَهُمْ


Transliteration: min banee adama min thuhoorihim thurriyyatahum


Literal: from the children of Adam, from their backs their offspring


One other verse in the Qur'an uses the word sulb. In this case there is no mention of tara'ib. It is an example of the simple Arabic phrase mentioned in Lane's Lexicon (see above), based on the belief that the seed of men proceed from their backs.


Forbidden unto you are your mothers, and your daughters, and your sisters [...] and the wives of your sons who (spring) from your own loins


Quran 4:23


And slightly more explicitly, a hadith in Sahih Bukhari (also in Sahih Muslim 39:6733) uses sulb to say that the source of Adam's future progeny was in his back before they were even conceived.


The Prophet (pbuh) said, "Allah will say to the person who will have the minimum punishment in the Fire on the Day of Resurrection, 'If you had things equal to whatever is on the earth, would you ransom yourself (from the punishment) with it?' He will reply, Yes. Allah will say, 'I asked you a much easier thing than this while you were in the backbone of Adam, that is, not to worship others besides Me, but you refused and insisted to worship others besides Me."'

Surah 86:6-7

Maa' (water) was a common Arab euphemism for semen.

Qur'an Text/Transliteration 86:7

Qur'an 86:7 says that sperm originates from the backbones and the ribs, a theory similar to another erroneous theory proposed by Hippocrates in 5th century BC (1000 years before Islam).

Hippocrates taught that semen comes from all the fluid in the body, diffusing from the brain into the spinal marrow, before passing through the kidneys and via the testicles into the penis.
