Nigeria’s former Minister of Education, Oby Ezekwesili, has described the country as great in potential, but lacking in a good leadership system.

Ezekwesili, who spoke at the 2022 graduation ceremony of the School of Politics, Policy and Governance (SPPG) in Abuja Weekend, blamed the leadership woes on what she described as distortions in the political culture According to her, until political leaders shun egotism and adopt a new leadership mindset, the socio-political and economic growth within the country would continue to be hindered.

PoliticsHow We Convinced Boko Haram To Release Remaining 23 Hostages Of Kaduna Train Att by Abelsoft(op): 2:43pm On Oct 09, 2022
THE Secretary of the Chief of Defence Staff seven-man negotiating committee, Professor Usman Yusuf has pointed out that for six months they were working behind the scenes to ensure that the Abuja train hostages were released without paying a ransom.

This was even as he said their committee did not encourage the payment of ransom to the terrorists. Speaking with Voice of America Hausa service, Prof Yusuf noted that, “We did not give a dime to the terrorists to release the 23 hostages. He noted that since 29th, March 2022, when the committee started working they told the insurgents that it was wrong to hold pregnant women, children hostage.

“We told them nowhere in Islam encourages that. We were pleading with them to reconsider their stance and release the hostages.”

EducationInternational Mobility Trends: The Top African Sender Of Students by Abelsoft(op): 2:09pm On Oct 09, 2022
Nigeria is the number one country of origin for international students from Africa: It sends the most students overseas of any country on the African continent, and outbound mobility numbers are growing at a rapid pace. According to data from the UNESCO Institute of Statistics (UIS), the number of Nigerian students abroad increased by 164 percent in the decade between 2005 and 2015 alone– from 26,997 to 71, In the short term, Nigeria’s oil price-induced fiscal crisis is likely to affect outbound student mobility. As many as 40 percent of Nigerian overseas students are said to rely on scholarships, many of which were backed by oil and gas revenues. The vast majority of these scholarships have been scaled back or scrapped altogether in the wake of the fiscal crisis. Further exacerbating the immediate prospects of Nigeria’s overseas students was a 2016 crash of the foreign exchange rate of Nigeria’s currency, the naira. The crash increased costs for international students, and reportedly left large numbers of Nigerian overseas students unable to make tuition payments.

But for all the short term upheaval, the push factors that underlie the outflow of students in Nigeria are fundamentally unchanged. These include:

PoliticsSauer: The Economic Wisdom Of A Carter-era ‘good Liberal Democrat’ Is Needed Now by Abelsoft(op): 12:40pm On Sep 29, 2022
US Policy Editor Charles Sauer has a new piece in Real Clear Markets looking back at the deregulation in the Carter Administration and asking why liberals of today have gotten so far away from those policies.

“Name the former government official, and the administration he worked for, who said this: “Whenever competition is feasible it is, for all its imperfections, superior to regulation as a means of serving the public interest.” No, the quote does not come from a veteran of the Reagan, Trump, or either Bush administration.

Instead, the quote in question is from self-described “good liberal Democrat” and Jimmy Carter alumni Prof. Alfred Kahn.

Among the positions Kahn held in the Carter Administration was chair of the Civil Aeronautics Board (CAB), which regulated airlines, determining which routes they could fly, and what prices they could charge. CAB’s control of prices and routes was supposed to make airline travel accessible to as many Americans as possible, but the lack of price competition made air travel a luxury for all but the well-to-do. CAB’s ban on price competition and control of airline routes also limited the ability of new airlines to enter the market.

It’s unheard of in DC for the head of an agency to assist in dismantling that agency, but Kahn understood that the CAB’s regulations had created and sustained an airline cartel, benefiting big airlines at the expense of ordinary Americans. Kahn was not the only liberal who understood airline regulation was hurting the people and harming the economy. In addition to President Carter himself, airline deregulation was supported by Ralph Nader and Sen. Ted Kennedy (with the assistance of his then-young advisor future Supreme Court Justice Stephen Byer). FOR MORE

PoliticsKeyamo Mocks PDP, Atiku For Using Lekki-ikoyi Bridge As Campaign Material by Abelsoft(op): 2:58pm On Sep 28, 2022
Earlier, Atiku had tweeted two campaign posters on his verified Twitter handle, saying “the campaign to take back and rebuild Nigeria starts today”.

On one of the posters, with the inscription, Atiku/Okowa #Betterdeycome has a picture of the Lekki-Ikoyi bridge commissioned during the administration of the former Governor Lagos State, Babatunde Fashola.

Reacting to this, Keyamo in a tweet mocked the PDP, Atiku, and his running mate, Ifeanyi Okowa for using the bridge as campaign material.

The minister, who also doubles as the spokesman for the All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council said the PDP chose to use the 1.36 km cable-stayed bridge in Lagos state in their campaign advert because they could not get any campaign material in Adamawa and Delta, where Atiku and Okowa hailed from.

He tweeted: “You all, please come and see something!! In their first campaign advert, after scouting from Delta to Adamawa and seeing nothing with which to campaign, Atiku & Okowa had to borrow ⁦@officialABAT Lekki Bridge in Lagos as a campaign material! Chai. This is disaster for PDP!”

This is not the first time Keyamo would deride the PDP since he became the APC campaign spokesperson.

Barely a week ago, the minister mocked the opposition party over the internal crisis rocking it.

EducationWhy Africa Urgently Needs To End Malaria by Abelsoft(op): 12:31pm On Sep 16, 2022
Africa, the world’s fastest developing and demographically youngest continent, continues to carry a disproportionately high share of the malaria burden in the world. The unsavoury situation has had devastating implications on the continent’s economy and the general well-being of the people, causing the eradication of the disease to become one of the most critical challenges it faces in its race to be a global powerhouse.

Eradicating the disease has, for many reasons, become a global emergency and Africa, now more than ever needs to strap its belt to ensure that it achieves a malaria-free, healthy society for its 1.3 billion-plus population while consequently meeting global targets in less than a decade. If the African continent has been dithering or uninspired in making valiant efforts toward the quick eradication of malaria, available statistics are enough to wake it up from its slumber.

PoliticsASUU: Confusion As Universities Set To Lose Sessions, Admission Seekers Stranded by Abelsoft(op): 12:44pm On Sep 12, 2022
Seven months after the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, embarked on strike, the end is not in sight.

The industrial action, which the union usually reviewed on a monthly basis, is now indefinite, with both parties not ready to shift ground.

DAILY POST reports that the development has brought confusion into the education system with a set of students, whose admission processes were concluded last year, unable to resume, whereas another set of students sat for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, UTME, this year, 2022.

With the development, two sets of new students, 2021 and 2022 are now waiting for resumption of their academic journey in some of the universities.

According to a university worker, “as it stands now, we have two sets of students ready to resume academic session. Those admitted in 2021 were to resume after the second semester examination early this year, 2022, but their dreams were cut short by the strike.

“Now, another set of students sat for the UTME this year, 2022, waiting for admission processes.

“You know that universities have been trying hard to recover from the COVID-19 lockdown, during which schools were shut down, and now we have this prolonged ASUU strike. I really don’t know how this would be handled.”

ASUU has been on strike since February 2022 over the Federal Government’s inability to meet a 2009 agreement reached with the union.
