I lost my smartphone and I plan to get a replacement. However, someone said my smartphone would be useless in the states as the networks won't match. That I'll just have to discard and buy phone there. Another said I can buy a US sim and use with my new phone. That buying a phone there is expensive and better bought here. Please those who are already there, which is accurate? Not having a smartphone sucks at the moment for someone like me, but i don't want to buy something I would have no choice but to decommission in 2 weeks time or so when I travel.

No, 360 is the rate recommended by CBN to Banks to sell FOREX for PTA and Form A.

Thank you.
Really? So importers of products we are trying hard to produce here so as to help indigenous producers and diversify our economy get the 305 rate, while students that are going to gain expert knowledge in order to build the economy and add more value get the inflated rate? Our priorities are just awesome. This flagrant lack of respect for education in this country is her greatest undoing.

I've been wondering why people go to banks when black market sells at the same rate. But yeah, authenticity of the American dollar is a good reason sha.
To me, N360 isn't worth the stress and bank iyanga. I was expecting N305. Do these banks even know the meaning and significance of PTA? For someone that wants just $2k or less, the difference is just 10k and less. Hence, for someone in the east or far west, going to lag for PTA is not cost effective at all. Even those in Lagos, how many have 14 days before their departure time from now? Then the 10 days wait after you apply? That's almost a month from now. And at the end what they intend to give is 360/$. This is nonsense. How dare they behave like this? And they will tell CBN that they have helped many students with dollars at CBN rates and asked for reimbursement. This is just business for them, no form of support for Nigerian students. Other banks do not even promise anything at all. The finance arm of our government doesn't care. Naija patriotism is simply by grace jare

hello house i need help i didn't Finished filling my ds 160 only copied my confirmation number and quickly used that in processing my appointment so as to get a good date,

eventually couldn't get a good date so i applied for expedite appointment now it has been approved and appointment date changed.

so i wanted to login back into my ds 160 to get all done but couldn't gain access showing the following :

Surname does not match.
Year of Birth does not match.
The answer for the security question is incorrect.

so i think my best option is filling another ds160 now i cant cancel and rebook appointment as it can only be done twice.

please what can i do so that my appointment confirmation can carry my new DS160 Confirmation number?

i know i can update profile on appointment booking portal but dont know if that will make things work fine.

please help is needed on what to do.

thanks in anticipation
How did you manage to get your surname wrong, your own date of birth wrong, and forgot the important security question you should have written down since you were warned by the page that it is the ultimate gatekeeper of your form?

to the best of my knowledge, once you have booked appointment, what they know is that DS 160 number you used. Updating your profile won't change anything on their end. Since you have used up your rescheduling options, you will either have to send the embassy a mail and see if that will work or just pay another 64k for another appointment. You may ask them. They have a thread on NL where they respond to queries so go there and repost your question.

Zodam16:
Good evening everyone.

My visa delayed at Abuja embassy yesterday 19th July by an african-american lady probably in her early to mid 30s

See below my transcripts- Kindly let me know what part I Bleeped and how i can do better next time

Vo: good morning
Me: good morning, how are you today?
Vo: can I av ur passport nd I-20
Me: I obliged
Vo: why are you going to the US?
Me: Am going to the US for my masters in public health at Georgia Southern University
Vo: why Georgia Southern university
Me: Asides the fact that Georgia Southern University has a great program curriculum that fits my graduate study needs, I am particularly interested in an on-going research real healthcare reforms focusing on primary care access in under-served population and the rural areas of which my community is presently underserved health wise. This will help me address the healthcare challenges when i return back home (Honestly she wasn't listening because she just kept typing and nodding till she noticed i had finished answering her question)
Vo: what do you do currently?
Me: I work with a health consulting firm as a public health specialist on the CDC/PEPFAR funded ACTION Plus up program where i support over 50 private health facilities in delivering quality HIV/AIDS services to people infected and affected by the disease. I also build the capacity of the health facility staff on proper monitoring of HIV patients. (she was nodding again and staring at her screen so i just thought she was seeing it on my DS160- well guess i was wrong)
Vo: who will be sponsoring you?
Me: My brother and my mum
Vo: (She calls his name because it's on my I-20) what does he do and your mum too?
Me: He works with the federal department of transport and he is also in the US army while my mum is senior lecture in one of the higher institutions in nigeria
Vo: Do you have his account statement with you?
Me: Yes i do
Vo: Can I see it? and your mums' to if you have it
Me: Pass the account statements to her
VO: (She looks at my brother's statement) why will he be willing to use all his savings to pay for your tuition?
Me: My mum will be supporting him with the tuition, so he wont be paying all alone (In my mind, what if he decides to use his whole savings sha)
VO: Your mum doesn't seem to have enough as well to cover for one year tuition
Me: Like i said earlier the one year tuition will come from both parties and not just one person. I also have savings myself
VO: I will be putting your application under administrative processing for now, She hands me the yellow paper and writes admin processing on it
Me: How long before a decision is made? Meanwhile she kept both financial statements and my passport with her, but returned my I-20
VO: I can't tell, but you will receive an email in that regards
Me: Thank you. (Then started to head out)

Feeling very disappointed i called my people and told them the outcome of the interview and they were very positive that they (VOs) probably needed to do more verification on the accounts i presented. A few hours letter, my mum confirmed from her account manager that an email came from the Embassy regarding her account statement i presented. Well my bro did not get any verification on his account.

BTW..... I saw about 6 applicants but i can't for sure say any of us got an approval yesterday

Today i decided to check my passport status since i was yet to receive any email as to what next, i saw a REFUSAL

I would be reapplying again but most likely lagos this time. Kindly go through my transcripts and let me know what i can do better next time
Abuja again. Lagosismyhome will call them world people. My brother nothing is wrong with your responses. Her only issue was with the statement. go to lagos and if possible, add that three of you will be sharing the burden, then get your own personal statement too. You may also get letter from your mum and brother stating that they are willing to sponsor you to any extent you need, and get a lawyer to notarize the letters. This may not be needed and the lagos people may not even ask you of any document, but just in case. You really can't have too much documents.

Aim towards Fall 2018 (August); so you have lots of time between now and then for researching and deciding on a school, writing any tests, applying and - hopefully- getting assistantships or scholarships. Don't waste it.

Visa delayed today at Abuja embassy.. my transcript goes thus
Vo: good morning
Me: good morning
Vo: can I av ur passport nd I-20
Me: I obliged
Vo: why are u going US?
Me: Am going for my masters degree in mathematics with a specialization in applied statistics
Vo: why Cleveland state university
Me: I chose Cleveland state university becos it offers a research and curriculum that's inline with My career goal of becoming a data analyst. Talking about the curriculum I am required to earn 36 credit hours in a period of 24months and I'll be taking courses like... linear algebra with functions of different variables, applied linear model, categorical data analysis, time series analysis... she was just nodding.
Vo: whr do u work
Me: I work in my dads company
Vo: what does ur dad do?
Me: my dad has a construction company, he also sells sound proof generators...
Vo: U're for masters in mathematics?

Me: tried correcting her and adding with a specialization in statistics.
Vo: she was like hey stop.. like she wasn't cool with d fact that I was trying to correct her
Me: I smiled
Vo: what will this course do for you?
Me: I intend to work in a telecom company as a data analyst wen I return to Nigeria after my masters and also with d skills and experience gained I'll be able to make good market research wch will be productive in helping the company make a better business decision...

The next thing wey I see na blue paper oooo... pls house what did I answer wrongly am open to corrections or could it be my ds160 cos I've been denied a b1/b2 visa last year October and I stated it in my b1/b2. Pls fam I need your help cos am trying to reapply again. Thanks and God bless.
To me, the issues lie in the bolded. The VO felt what you are going to study is in no way related to your "career", not because you tried to correct her. As a matter of fact, I believe why she stopped you from correcting her was because she felt that aspect is trivial. For her the main issue is, "Why is he going to another country to spend time and money on a masters program that has nothing to do with his career?" And that was why she asked you the question @ the last bolded. Your reply to her that you would return to work in a telecom company as a data analyst didn't convince her. In naija parlance, she go feel say na wash... else you would be working there now or someplace similar. Else you would currently be in that field or career, instead of your dad's construction/merchant company. From the foregoing, she may conclude you don't intend to return home afterwards or that you are not a genuine student.

Try to work on that career aspect next time and you'll be fine. you don't have to change it (to avoid issues due to inconsistency). You just need to come up with cogent reasons why you want to study something completely different from your current 'career'. You may talk about your passion and any past accomplishments in that field and how you intend to build on that. You may mention online courses you have taken to show your passion, or something else. you may mention your internships in the telecom field (you have any?) So get creative. Don't lie, just get creative.

The verification guys may require it. It wasn't required of me in Abuja, but it was in Lagos. It's just for sighting and if people are to behave reasonably, no one should make a fuss about it because the fact that one is able to book an appointment successfully is proof that one did pay. However, many people don't behave reasonably and a power drunk naija staff may turn you guys back because of it. So she may try her luck... or reschedule.

Please don't type in all caps next time. Shouting at people is never cool, no matter your challenge or mood.

Transcript (VISA Delayed):

Location was Abj, 13th, 7.30am appointment - ... - I ended up with the man and the following ensued:

Me: Good morning sir.

VO: Good morning. Please pass your documents

I obliged.

VO: So, why did you pick this school?

Me: I found the course outline for my program very appealing, compared to the other schools I considered. I considered 4 schools but applied to just two: Cranfield and Purdue. I was admitted by both but decided to opt for Purdue due to what I believe is a superior course outline for the program, with courses like theory and design of control systems, systems engineering and modelling of micro/nano systems. I was also offered a research assistantship by a professor in the school and that also helped me make up my mind (I wanted to add top 20 in the world for engineering but it seemed I already killed it)

VO nods throughout. Then:

VO: Say the school name again?

I did.

VO: huh? (with a slightly confused face)

I did again and spelt it this time.

VO: Oh, ok.

VO: what was your undergraduate degree in?

Me: Chemical Engineering.

VO: So what's the chemical formula for table salt?

Me: (looking straight at him with a smile) NaCl [in my mind, "really bro? SS1 kids know that! grin]

VO: (Satisfied nod)

VO: who is sponsoring?

Me: I got a research assistantship, which would cover most of my tuition, and my uncle would be footing the rest.

VO: what does he do?

Me: He is a successful investment consultant and he has his own company that deals in the importation of industrial chemicals.

VO: May I see your undergraduate transcripts and the statement of account

Me: Okay [gave him the statement of account. Was still trying to get the transcripts.. then:]

VO: This is a company account.

Me: Yes, his company account.

VO: No. This is unacceptable. This account will include money for supplies, paying staff, etc

Me: (in my mind, wetin this one dey talk?) It is his company and the money there is money available for my studies. If you will please look at the balance, you will...

VO: Is it a big company or a small company?

Me: (a bit thrown off balance): a big company (this was my own mistake in this particular situation)

VO: how many employees?

Me: Not sure.

VO: [Drops the statement and begins the furious typing. He didn't even ask me about the transcripts again. then:]

VO: Have you travelled out before?

Me: No sir, I've had no reasons to before now (in my mind, oga stop making small talk. i know say your belly don spoil already)

VO: (Types some more) I'm sorry you are not eligible for visa at this time. This paper will explain why. Good luck in your studies

Me: (in my mind, good luck in my studies? which kin lip service be this?) Okay.

I took my docs and left. I was just wondering which kin wahala be this. I know these things are highly subjective and another VO will probably not have any issue with the statement or even ask for it. He didn't even ask me about my test scores, and i was hoping to use that question to finish work. People have been using company accounts till date to get F1 visas. God knows the best shaa.

I calmly called my 'pre-excited' people and told them the news. They felt worse than I did. I didn't have time to feel depressed. I was thinking of plan B. So I took a bus from ABJ to PH that same day and while in the bus arranged for another 64k. I prayed for provision and God that doesn't fail provided (I no be obo o. I no even get better phone at the moment). Then I reapplied yesterday. Checked and found that Lagos has a nearer date than Abj this time and booked Lagos. Uploading my pic wanted to become a source of frustration till I found the solution, which i shared earlier ...

I have asked questions and made slight corrections concerning that statement and prepared to meet them again next week. My own be say, I am leaving naija with a visa for Fall 2017, hoo-haa.
So today I got to Walter C. by past 6am for 8.00am appointment and ignored all those hustlers and their warnings that one can't drive beyond a certain point. I gave one mobile policeman my phone and joined the mammoth, shapeless queue.

I was interviewed by the handsome bearded dude at window 4. He looked nice and smiled occasionally and I wished I ended up with him. Then, with that same cute smile, he denied a nice couple that seemed to have their act together. I briefly wished I ended up elsewhere. Next thing, I was directed to that guy's window. I think he denied the lady before me too... not sure. But I had learned by now that his smile is like a professional mask he wears, and not an indication of approval, satisfaction or anything similar. All this while, my subconscious kept praying.

Fast forward to my interview:

VO: Good morning, how are you? (with that cute smile)

Me: I'm very well, thank you; and you?

VO: I'm fine. Pass me your i-20 please? And your passport.

(I oblige)

VO: Thank you. (another cute smile)

VO: Tell me about your school (

Me: Purdue University is...

VO: (cuts in) Yeah.. (probably thinking I was repeating my school for confirmation. And he said yeah without looking at my i-20 so he must have had something about me on his screen, like DS 160 or previous interview in Abj)

Me: Purdue University is a great school with a very industry-focused course outline for her Mechanical Engineering program. I say its great because her engineering faculty consistently rank among the best in the country and the world. I also got a research assistantship from the school and that helped me make up my mind to settle for this institution. (sounding confident, looking at him eyeball to eyeball whenever he raises his face to meet mine. However my voice quavered a bit as a I tried to slow down so as not to hamper my articulation).

VO: Okay. So how many schools did you apply to?

Me: 2 schools.

VO: And they are?

Me: Purdue University and Cranfield University.

VO: How many admitted you?

Me: Both admitted me.

VO: (glances at me)

(I was expected the usual followup - "So why did you choose Purdue?" or "Why did you choose to school in the US?", but he excused himself to talk to his colleague about something unrelated to my interview, a fellow VO that came to his side. He soon returned his attention to me and beamed me a smile. I beamed back.)

VO: So why do you think you got this assistantship?

Me: I believe the professor was very impressed with my test scores, statement of purpose and other aspects of my application package. (pause... I wanted to add my test scores of 110 in TOEFL and 318 in GRE, but decided to tow another line, so continued thus..) I also reached out to the professor to indicate interest to join his research team. (Then I proceeded to tell him one of the prof's research interests)

VO: (nodding and typing) Okay.

VO: (looks up) Where did you have your undergraduate degree?

Me: FUTO. Federal University of Technology Owerri.

VO: You studied Engineering in your first degree?

Me: Yes, Chemical Engineering.

VO: Okay. Okay.

VO: Who would be sponsoring you?

Me: I got a research assistantship and my uncle's company would foot any balance.

VO: What does your uncle do?

Me: (in my mind, I said uncle's company o. I know say you hear me well.) He is into the importation of this and exportation of that.

VO: Okay.

VO: (types for a while, then another cute smile..) your visa has been approved. You'll be picking it in... usually it doesn't take more than 3 working days but then... bla bla... bla bla bla... bla bla...

I smiled back at him, thanked him, told him God bless him and left. Went to the mopol holding my phone, gave him and one lady police there #500 and told them to keep the change and left. Saw Ngozi Ezeonu on a queue and felt like me sef don become star too. Switched on my phone and sent a text message of faith I composed to my family days ago, that I have gotten the visa.

Then, for the first time today, I realised I was very hungry.

NB: No single document was asked of me. Also, I went with the same company financial statement that the man in Abj for illogical reasons delayed my visa. But God opens doors no man can shut.

Some people were saying I should have said over a 100 employees then (someone even cast aspersions on my intellect, something about what any smart person should have said). Recall that the issue the man had with the statement was that the balance he was seeing may include money for paying staff and buying supplies. If I had said a large company of over 100 staff, he may have argued that lots of staff would need to be paid from the statement's balance + lots of supplies. And I didn't want to say less than 20 so he wouldn't feel it may be a small company with just one very good year. So at that instant, "I'm not sure" seemed kinda safe to me, as I don't work in the man's company. Like I said, these interviews are highly subjective and that Abj man was just difficult for no good reason. Thank God for everything shaa

I thank everyone who have been contributing to this thread - lagosismyhome, texrem, imperioux, admin justwise (else they for don derail this thread since) etc, and all who have shared their transcripts, both successful and delayed. You all rock. I shall frequent here to help others too.

To the best of my knowledge, company account is at disadvantage with F1 to some extent depending on whom your VO is; B1/2 with company account won't have an issue. Infact, three of my colleague and I got our B1/2 with our company's account in 2014. A company is an entity on its own; if it liquidates what happens to you? I will advise you use your uncle personal acct in future. I am not a VO; this is just my view BUT COMPANY ACCOUNT AND F1 VISA ARE LIKE A MARRIAGE WHERE ONE IS BEING COMPELLED ON OTHER; IT WON'T WORK.
Someone I know recently got approved with a company account. And the owner of the company isn't even related to the person by blood. If my uncle's personal acc could do the job, I would have used it. If he moves large chunks of money there now, it would look suspicious. I am just praying for more grace this time

Sorry for the delay but you made some obvious mistake .... you states you had research assistantship. So my question was this not on your i20 ?

If yes then the question on who sponsoring you was answered incorrectly. You made the focus to be about your uncle and not about your funding based on what you wrote. I would say you just had a slight delay. Go through transcript and cover all bases on how others have responded and you should be fine next time around. Best of luck
Thanks, but I believe I mentioned that I have a research assistantship and that my uncle would be footing the rest. I'm sorry I didn't include it in the transcript. I will modify it. I remember mentioning that, just that it skipped my memory as I was typing my transcript. His issue wasn't that the money wouldn't be enough. It was that it is a company account, which still sounds weird to most people I have told because I also came with letters from the bank and the man himself that owns the company, concerning the company. But like I said, God knows the best.

Thanks for the advice. If it comes up again, I shall certainly not forget to mention it.

Uploading my pic wanted to become a source of frustration till I found the solution, which i shared earlier.

It's now that I am appreciating the fact that I was delayed on 13th and reapplied on 14th. If one had asked I would have said that would be impractical. I pray God grants me more favour this time and I still strongly believe that everything works out for the best, even if it seems meaningless at the time. I prayed and fasted for days but this still happened. That doesn't mean God is no longer in control. This is what faith is. As a human I did feel bad while returning yesterday. I wished I had called my people with better news. We don't exactly have money to throw around but I thank God they have my mindset and quickly swung into action for plan B, and that God provided smiley

I have asked questions and made slight corrections concerning that statement and prepared to meet them again next week. My own be say, I am leaving naija with a visa for Fall 2017, hoo-haa.

And yes, all hustlers deserve to be nabbed by the EFCC. Those people are doing blood money there. One of the worst things you can do to yourself there is to fall a prey, wittingly or unwittingly - you will be 'a goner'.

One of them was adamant that my printout will not be accepted because I sent it to my email first and printed it from there, so it had "print confirmation" "print application" "email confirmation" tabs on the page. He showed me that of others and truly, mine seemed different. but I know that what consulate needs is just the barcode and mine was present and legible. Why should format matter? They are the ones that added the "send to email" functionality.

Then I calculated the cost should I choose to heed the hustler: 1k to return to my lodge to get my password, 1k to return back, then about 3k minimum to just reprint it. That is enough money for Chisco bus back to the east. And that's Besides the stress and the anxiety of running late (I hate being stressed or anxious, which is why I got there on time). So I told the hustler to free me, and that I will contact him if I get there and it becomes necessary. Taxi men were already hovering around me at that point, like hawks 'eyeing' and circling a fat chicken.

He said okay o. Your choice o. I have told you now o. You will lose your appointment o. Bla bla bla o. Bla bla bla o. Neighbours were looking at me like, hmmmm.

My people, nobody that matters made a fuss about my printout when we started the verification process. They just scanned their barcode and returned my paper (like I reasoned, that's the only thing they are after!). Even the stapling of passport and "arrangement of docs" were not needed.

Beware of hustlers. You sit down, #200. They staple something with one pin, #200. Others things run in thousands. If they can they will charge you for breathing while waiting for the embassy to commence verification. God forbid evil.

I want to share what may help people. I tried uploading my pic but it was showing error after telling me it is acceptable. A lot of people have had this issue with no solution on the internet - last i checked, which is like some minutes ago.

This is how i solved the problem: I went to a cyber cafe and used their network cable. Simple. I had been using my modem but all was futile. I tried different pics, different pixels, different browsers (had to download some) - safari, firefox, chrome, opera... all was futile.

Then I reasoned it may be something to do with variable or fixed IP, so I went to a cyber cafe and used their cable. The stuff uploaded like magic. I hope this helps someone. It almost got me frustrated this evening because I couldn't go further without the upload and going without an upload will make one serious breakfast, lunch and dinner for those hustlers.

Hello house, i am new here.
I want to apply for a study visa. I have HND in electrical engineering from a polytechnic here in Nigeria. And i intend to go for a Post graduate program. Please i need advice on how to go about it. A PGD course in the US or south africa.

Thank you all.
Get a Bachelors first. It makes it easier. This is merely a suggestion.
Also, I think some go through the Associate Degree route, but it's more dicey, visa wise.

Lol, you think we follow admission session herehuh
This thread doesn't go more than 400 pages before justy creates a new part
Lol, oga people still have interviews slated for various dates within this month. I know someone who will be having his on the 10th, and I know that some will still have theirs as late as the 4th quarter of this month. Unless it's the mod's personal policy to terminate a thread once it hits 400 pages (which sounds more like your conjecture than a fact, as it's already over 400 pages), I see no need to keep wrestling with "Justy"'s discretion (you called for a new thread earlier)
